I bought these (http://www.ebay.com/itm/310650327210?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649) and then realized I didn't read the description thoroughly. It says they are for new riders, which I am, but it says to wear for rides up to an hour?? Which is not what I was planning to use them for. Is there a reason these wouldn't be good for longer rider?

My guess is that they have a thinner chamois than other products made by the same company, so they've subjectively rated them. I don't place much stock in those "ratings". Instead, I wear a pair of shorts for any and all length rides until my sit bones tell me otherwise. You may find that they're fine for 3 hour rides (for example) but beyond that, you want something different in your chamois.
Good luck!
