I've been searching for ways to raise funds for the 24 hour Booty Ride and decided to try to make/sell some key-chains, etc, from old bike chains. I've the bike chains, now I am working out the process.

Has anyone done this? Any tips? I think I want to paint the chains different colors if I can find an inexpensive source of appropriate spray paint.

the little red riding hood ride ( all womens breast raising funds for breast cancer, supported by males dressed as wolves) in Utah last year awarded each finisher with a bracelet made of bike chain, and "oh my how conviently" had a booth selling charms ( some theme related to the ride and some just nice ribbons for various causes etc.) just next to the finish area. It's a fun reminder of a great ride for a good cause .

It sounds like an excellent idea.

Thanks for the weigh-in Marni! I've found my hands aren't strong enough to break the chains so will swing by my LBS and get a better chain tool.

I've never used a chain tool that didn't take some force. But you could put it in a vise and turn the whateverit'scalled [they say nouns are the first thing to go ] with a pair of pliers, or put a small piece of pipe over it for more leverage the way you would with a pedal wrench.

ETA: Park Tool just calls it the handle. I could swear there's another name for it. :p
