8th Annual Memorial Ride and Walk
Sunday, April 21, 2013

16094

The Annual Memorial Ride and Walk brings New Yorkers together to remember pedestrians and cyclists killed in our city over the past year. This will mark the eighth year that this event has occurred. Riders will visit the site of each ghost bike, a white-painted memorial for cyclists, installed since 2012. Please help us show solidarity with the family and friends of those lost by joining us for this important event. Bring flowers and other items to honor those lost.

Please look out for a full schedule and route to be posted in the next few weeks.

For those interested who have not done this ride before, it is a slow-paced, safety-oriented ride. There is usually some media presence and family and friends of the fallen do show up.

The rides will take place with legs in different boroughs, starting around 1 PM, and converge at the last bike near the Queensboro bridge at 4:30. I am leading one of two legs in Queens; we will probably begin by meeting in the Jackson Heights/Woodside area for western Queens riders, pickup more people as we head SE and reach the first bike by 1 PM. We'll then work our way NW back to Queensboro Plaza for the final bike and convergence of all the ride legs.

The after event is still in the planning stages but it looks to be food and drinks at a nearby LIC area venue. I encourage all to attend however much of the routes as you can, and show support for the casualties of 2012, and for safer streets going forward.

We are still hashing out all the details, so please check back here or bookmark and refer to the links above in the next few weeks for more updates.

The routes and times for all the bikes are now posted online (http://ghostbikes.org/node/949) for the 4/21 ride. I'll be leading the Northeast Queens leg.

If you would like to donate you can also do so here (http://www.crowdrise.com/ghostbike/fundraiser/ghostbikes). Thanks, all.
