as a result of the recent crash I baged my uier thigh and my outer upper arm quite badly, road rash and black and blue. The road rash and the black blue and yellow are gone. There is little to no residual soreness although both bruises were quite painful to the touch o the day I fell. What I am left with is two large lumps of hard tissue matter in the central area of each bruise. They are not tender to the touch nor do they move around, its more like a floating cartiledge or plastic under the skin. I have never had this before.

what is it?

Should I be doing anything, applying ,rubbing?

Will they eventually go away?

I am simply curious not overly concerned just curious.

Thanks

It's probably a blood clot from the bruise. I've had them before. They eventually get absorbed, but they can stick around for some time before that happens. As far as I know they are not dangerous (they are not in your circulatory system - so they are not like DVTs) unless they get infected, but I think if that's going to happen it happens soon after the injury.

"As anyone who has suffered from them knows, hematomas may feel sponge-like, rubbery, hard or lumpy (or some combination of these characteristics). Despite how they feel, hematomas are not typically cause for concern - unless they occur on the head following a head injury. In this case, it's crucial to seek medical attention immediately. (It's important to note that a head hematoma may not occur for several weeks following the head injury, so be mindful of its potential to appear)."

and...on a more personal note- I took a handlebar end in the upper thigh during a high speed endo- the consequent lump lasted about 4 months (: no long term problem.........(except I go slower on that particular drop now! haha)

I still have a dent in my thigh from a spill I took five and a half years ago. I'm not sure whether it was the hematoma itself that caused it, or whether both the hematoma and the dent were caused by damage to the connective tissue that happened in the impact.

I think heat and gentle self massage help (both by increasing blood flow and by gently breaking up the clots so they can be absorbed). If you happen to have an electrical stimulation unit, those have been really helpful to me over the years in working out all kinds of swelling, but I probably wouldn't apply the pads over scabs or even newly healed skin.

I have a thigh dent too. I am sure it came from one of my bike accidents -- probably a mountain bike spill, but it's just cosmetic at this point. I have no idea how I got it, but I've had it for a few years now!

I had a knot on my shin along with a colored bruise that lasted for over two years and just recently went away. I've had other bruises last that long or longer. They eventually went away. I asked my Dr. about it during a routine visit about a year ago and her answer was that sometimes some of them never go away. Glad mine have so far, still have a couple lingering.
