I've been working three days a week since August at our high density storage facility (I work at a university library). Initially it was supposed to be a permanent transfer but my 52 year old body wasn't up to the rigors of the warehouse component of the job.

In December, I smashed a finger when handle broke on a tray full of books, landing on my little finger. Took a few weeks to heal up and while it still aches, it's mostly better.

Fast forward to Wednesday, I was climbing down off the fork lift (we use it to retrieve books off the 40' high shelves) and my bad knee (the one that's already had five surgeries) buckled and I hit the ground like a ton of bricks. I hyper-flexed my bad knee and struck my back on the edge of the lift. Now I'm on crutches for three weeks and have to see an ortho surgeon because "the amount of swelling you have is indicative of an internal tear or rupture".

I am so sick of being hurt!!!!!!!!

((((Pax)))). I'm so sorry. What a sucky (is that a word?) run of bad luck. I'd give you a big hug if I could.

So sorry Pax. Are they going to move you to another job?

Thanks Indy.

Spoke - they will most likely move me back to a desk job at the main facility.

Sorry Pax, that sux! Hope you'll heal up soon, and no more injuries!

I do feel your pain on the "52 year old body". I turn 52 in April, and I seem to be getting one injury after another. My current one is a sore ball of right foot. It doesn't seem like much, but it means I have to wear shoes inside all the time (we live in a tiled condo), no more stair-climbing (which I'd added to my workout and probably brought this on), limit the length of my walks, and even yoga hurt on Wednesday. I've been icing and hope it won't hang around too long -- it's not like we have a podiatrist here on the island, or even the ability to buy gel insoles. Just one more thing I took for granted in the US!

My new piece of exercise equipment (http://www.octanefitness.com/products/seated-ellipticals/xr6/) was delivered today, I'm trying to see the positives in that it has arm resistance I can do until my leg heals up... but have to admit I am getting a bit down, I want to make progress on my health, not keep going backwards. *sigh*

We used to laugh at my mom because she is so good at injuring herself. "clumsy" or "accident prone", take your pick. Well, I seem to be following in her footsteps-- the stumbles that is! I injured my back and when it started to get better I re-injured it-- twice. It was starting to get better and then I splashed my hand while I was browning butter. My friend said "You should just go to bed for a month" and my daughter said "Knowing her she'd fall out of bed". Oy!

By the way, having re-injured myself twice has given me a STRONG motivation to go slowly. I'm so tired of being sedentary but I've scared myself into compliance! Take it easy and feel better!

That's where I'm heading, trying very hard to be mindful, not move too quickly, really pay attention to what my body is doing. Sure does make being healthy a thing to NEVER take for granted, doesn't it?

I hear your frustration Pax, and hope you are feeling better soon! My last year seemed to be one injury after another to my 53 year old body, so I know exactly how you feel. Hang in there!

I feel your pain also. I'm 52 and I'm still trying to recover from re-injuring an old, arthritic ankle back in early November. Before that, my old knee injury was starting to act up. Every time it seems to I start to get better....bam! I haven't been on my bike for more than a few, slow miles in a couple months, and it doesn't look like that's going to be changing any day soon. Bah!

It does--and that is the silver lining of non-permanent injury. Gives us something to appreciate when health returns.

I should mention it's not entirely an age thing. I seem to be a bit injury-prone at ages 36-38. At least I hope that 38 is the upper bound of this injury-prone phase of my life. I will watch for it to return at 52...

My knee is doing better than I expected, I can't bend it... but it bears weight just fine. Now if the huge bruises on my back would fade I'd be good to go!
