View Full Version : Speaking of the color white... Who has a white bicycle?

So I've been shopping for a new bike (with many thanks to all who have replied to my other threads!). It looks like the Dolce is winning the race - so to speak - and depending on the model, I'll have a choice of white. I honestly didn't like it much at first, but it's either growing on me, or I'm getting used to it. I like the gold accents. A few other bikes I looked at also came in white, so is this a trend/fashion color? And do people like their white bikes? I'm just not sure - looks so difficult to keep clean I'm afraid it'll show every ding.

The other bike I really liked came in matte grey. It looked like primer. I was tempted to buy it and get it painted :o How much would that cost? I'm a very visual person and this is driving me a little nuts. My garage/corral is right off my kitchen and it's nice to to look out and see my pretty bikes.

I have a white bike. It shows every ding, grease mark, and scratch. I knew it would, so it's no surprise. I don't worry about it.

Mine is mostly white. It was either that or matte black/pink, which I wasn't too thrilled with. I like it.

Yes, white bike owner here too. The worst is if it happens to start raining on a ride and all the little bits of dirt and pine needle and leaf matter end up all over the lower parts of the bike. I am a little slack about keeping my bikes absolutely pristinely clean, so I don't think I'd buy another white bike. However, it's lovely when it's all cleaned up, as rare as that is!

I do think white may be trendy right now as there weren't many white bikes around when I chose that "color" for my Bike Friday (2004), and now it seems like at least half or more of every bike I look at online that I like is white or white with some accent color.

I have a white Dolce with blue accents. I would have preferred blue with white accents but that color was not offered. The saddle and bar tape were white too, but I changed both out immediately. I have a stock Specialized white saddle available if anyone is interested, never used.

I admit I don't clean my bike as often as I should, but I do like my bike to look a little "used".

I was thinking if the bike was gold with white accents, it would be love at first sight.

Thanks for your replies.

I have a white Dolce with green accents, and I LOVE it. But I did have them change out the white handlebar tape for black. I knew that wasn't going to work out too well! Plus they said that the white tape made the bike look "faster"...and I didn't want to give anyone the wrong idea. :p

I have a white Specialized Ruby that has some small colored accents. The primary thing I dislike about the mostly white frame is that brake pad debris/dust ends up all over the frame. The primary thing I like about the mostly white frame is that it is highly visible and makes me feel safer than if I had a frame that blended in with the road color.

Mine are all white with some secondary and tertiary colors. Road bike is white with orange and gray, CX bike is white with blue and black, current mtn bike is white with blue. My new mtn bike will be my first non-white bike, though the fork will be white.

I like white. I like the way mud splatters look on white bikes. I'm weird, maybe...?

My last two road bikes have been white. I don't notice they are any dirtier looking than any other color bike (except maybe the flat brown/black Tricross my husband had for awhile). To be fair, this is my fair-weather bike so it doesn't see much rain action anymore. I have white bar tape, too. It's a vinyl tape, so it stays quite clean....I haven't had to change it in 4 years now. :D

Both of my bikes are pearl white. My next bike, a Ruby, will also be pearl white with teal tape. :) Gosh come to think of it I'm on my second white car, second whitish cat, and third white dog. Yep, I like white.

LOL!!

I have a black and white bike and was a little obsessive about cleaning it in the beginning. Now, I usually just quickly wipe off any obvious dirt, but don't worry too much about it. I don't think I could have white bar tape though. Nice look, but once it got grungy it would drive me nuts.

Good luck with the shopping! We'll all be anxiously waiting for your decision :)

I have a white bike with blue accents. I was actually a little concerned when I bought it because it looks like an expensive bike, and I didn't want to be a crime target. I let the frame get a bit grimy, and I don't mind. But I just had her in the shop for new shifting cables and they cleaned her up... when I went in to pick the bike up I was all like "WOW, that is one SWEET looking bike!"

Thank you! It's so nice to find people to share my enthusiasm and indecision with! The white w/gold Dolce also has the SRAM, which was the subject of another one of my threads. Part of me says to wait until next spring. Our cycling season here is pretty much over now. If I get the white bike, it will share the stable with my black bike, so I can get a yin/yang thing going ;) I'm having too much fun.

My mountain bike is white, love the look of white bikes. I've had white cars and dark colored cars and white cars shwo their age and dirt a lot less than black cars. Not sure if the same holds true for bikes.

No white bikes here. The road bikes are: Trek is black with red and Felt is black with blue. Mountain bike is black, with silver (I think). Cruiser bike is blue with a bit of black.

My Dolce is white with red - I love it. It rains enough here in Oregon that it's probably never going to be completely clean again.

Back in the '80s I had a white bike. Pretty with red lettering. I rode it till I broke the frame. I loved it. It was pretty. :) It had a clear coat over the white so scratches didn't show all that much. It was the bike where I had one of my serious crash and the bike came out better than me. It didn't look like it was in a serious crash. Replaced bar tape, brake hood and lever, replaced seat and it was good.

Only bike that didn't show much of any minor scratch or dirt was brushed finish of my Titanium Litespeed. My metallic red Transition Pro (Specialized) shows water marks, dirt, scratch... in all its glory. My big box kind of bike Mod 6.0 by K2 also shows dirt, grime, scratch.

I also have another vintage bike from the '80s RB-1 by Bridgestone. lugs are rusted, gooseneck and the quill for the handle bar is rusted and frozen. It shows scratches like any other paint job.

Get the color you want. Scratches and chipping happens on all bike. so don't fret too much just because its white. It's not like a blouse.

I'm honestly not too concerned with the cleanliness of the bike. It's just the way the thread went. That happens. It's just that I've never seen so many white bikes and I was wondering what the word on the street was. If this was the new thing, if cyclists were trying to emulate someone ("Oh, So-and-So rides a white Whatever - I must have one!"). That's all, just curious.

My hybrid is white. I don't like the color, wish it was red. :) It looks dirty and scratched up. My fault, I know. I have thought about getting it repainted but it isn't worth the money.

I have white bar tape on my road bike. I got it nice and clean with Bar Keepers Friend.

My Amira is White & Red and I love, love, love this bike & paint job. Many have said it was sexy looking. I recently got a Vita which is primarily white with turquise & grey pinstripe feel it is such a pretty bike. I wipe down my bikes at least once a week or if a see a little grime, I have done that with whatever bike I have owned. I just like keeping my bikes looking new.

On the SRAM note, my Amira was available only with SRAM and coming from a Shamano user of many years I did not find it to be a problem at all, in fact I like it better and glad the choice was made for me.

I never thought I'd like a white bike.
This is a Motobecane Fantom CXX from bikesdirect.
The frame looks to be a clone of the Surly Crosscheck. This one is the 42cm size.
Comps are mostly SRAM Apex.
I use it as a quick commuter, not a cx bike.
I like how the white shows the dirt.

My retired FCR 1 was/is white and my Vita is white. I much prefer white to the black/pink of my Ruby...which is the only thing I do not like about my Ruby. I keep my bikes waxed and if they get dirty I am usually able to wipe them clean with a damp cloth. I have used Pledge and car wax with success. I love the look of white bikes with colored bar tape. That maybe the excuse I use to upgrade roadie in a few years

I don't care much about the color of my bikes. But, I would not want a white one. I just don't like white for anything, except an occasional blouse with black pants!
I am notoriously bad about cleaning my bikes. I hate to tell you how bad my carbon bike looks now, after riding continuously for almost 2 years... I've cleaned it like maybe twice. DH does a thorough cleaning and maintenance a couple of times a year and unless I get stuck in rain, that's it.

Another careless bike owner: I'm not good at cleaning my bikes. Every time I bring my bike in to LBS, they remark: what a dirty bike. (Oops) I would not buy a white bike. My bikes are each:

silver
brown-grey (folding bike) I love this dahon for its lightness, nimbleness and convenience. Don't care for the colour. But it was the best model for me.
orange with black accent
red with black accent

I knew my white bike needed a wash when I went to a get together that many of my biking friends attended. Everyone came out to see my new bike. Then my friend looked at the bike and started suggesting the cleaning products I could use to make it look new again. I guess i better wash/clean it.

But I do like my white bike a lot better than the matte blue one I almost bought just to save money. It was that bike that was on sale or the same bike in white (not on sale). Well, seeing as I didn't want to hate the color everytime I got on the bike, the white with blue pinstriping won! :D

White bike owner here with brown accents, it's a Specalized Expedition and my other bike is cream colored with black accents. I never thought I would pick a white bike but I really like it and also keep it fairly clean. Since I keep it waxed it wipes down easily enough unless I've spent a lot of time on wet/muddy dirt roads, then it needs the hose. I get a lot of comments on my bike about people loving how it looks.

I too kind of like how it looks with a little mud splashed on it, but don't leave it on long :o

My bike isn't predominantly white but there are quite a bit of white accents which brighten it up. My rear derailleur and hoods are white too. Because I keep it indoors, I wipe down with a damp cloth after every ride. I don't know how long the derailleur will stay white though, and I'd like to change out the hoods to black at some point. I like having the white on the frame itself though.

I have a white road bike with lime green accents. It is really easy to keep clean with a quick wipe down after every ride.

My bike is teal and clear-coated aluminum, but the underside of the downtube, bottom half of the seat tube, bottom bracket shell, and chainstays are white. Who thought that up? Those are the spots that get dirtiest, and aren't the easiest parts of the bike to clean!

My road bike is white with black lettering and a couple of red accents. Originally the color was something I just decided to live with (this bike only came in 2 colors and I didn't like the other one), but I've grown to like the white quite a lot. Or maybe I've just accumulated enough good memories on this bike that I like the color by association.
