I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that the percentage of bike riders ( not to mention people working out at the gym or jogging in public) who can successfully wear white shorts in public is less than 1/10 of 1.00%.
Ispent this weekend spending a certain amount of time riding bhind a well endowed older woman of color who definitely should not have been wearing white shorts, there was just way too much information available visibly. Then today I watched three different young ladies working out at the gym and confirming my impression that there is no one skinny enough, cut enough or otherwise appealing to wear white shorts while sweating and grunting and straining. Then there was the chick on the elliptical in front of me, who should not have been wearing white. After I got tired of fulminating about how much of her derreir I could see, I spen another mind numbing period contemplatig who in the world would wear a hot pik thong to the gym, much less under white shortie shorts.
Maybe I am just old and old fashioned and inclined to be grumpy but really????

You should tell them it is a fashion faux pas to wear white after Labor Day.
Oh, wait, that is an old fashioned rule. Just tell them the TRUTH...it's gross!!!
That's a lot of white shorts... fortunately I have not seen a lot of that in my area. Yet.

Someone who wants to show off her hot pink thong. And her a$$.

I agree - light colored or white shorts are just wrong. There was a good reason the UCI required black years ago, and you can see it on any rider caught out in the rain.

while their shorts might have been gross, how come you spent so much time looking at them? snork!

Ha ha back- I was condemmed to two hours on the elliptical ( BORING) one hour at cardio stress point and one hour at cardio endurance- a personal challenge from myself and the coach to me just to see if I could do it. There is only so much time I can spend watching the soaps which is all the tvs in the gym seem capable of getting. I also spent about 45 minutes with my eyes closed just groovin to the music but two hours is mind numbingly dull unless you find something to amuse your eyes with and contemplate. At least that'smy story and I'm stickin to it.

I haven't come across this, but a ton of tennis players wear white shorts and I haven't uh, noticed an issue! Maybe since it's such a norm in the sport of tennis that the fabric and design is made a little better to prevent the see-through issue! I can only hope I can avert my eyes if I come across this while cycling. :P

Marni, this is why I miss riding with you. I cannot wait until I'm up to par again! (and not working)

Tennis players probably have underwear beneath their shorts. Bike shorts are usually just one layer of lycra and are meant to be worn without underwear. If you've ever made the mistake of buying a white swimsuit (guilty!) then you know that light coloured lycra becomes virtually transparent when wet.

I was behind two guys today, both wearing some team kit with white and blue, with the shorts mostly white. It was raining today............

I can think of at least one guy I wouldn't mind seeing in white kit in the rain.... But... in general? Not so much!
I have a pair of lighter blue shorts I wear when it's really really hot in the summer. They stay fairly opaque when wet, show salty sweat stains way less than black, and don't absorb radiant heat from the sun at such an astounding and atrocious rate!
