Today I went out for a ride after work on the local rail trail. I was literally dodging snakes on the way home. The trail was littered with leaves and small branches so it was almost impossible to tell which were snakes and which were branches until you were literally right on top of them! I did a lot of swerving today! And I didn't have the heart to go back each time I hoped I missed. I saw 6 or 7 tiny snakes and one bigger one (not too big!). It was a strange ride!

YUCK! I think I only saw one live snake this whole year (and a few road kill dead ones) - that's enough for me.

I every so often find snakes sunning themselves on the bike trail. I once had to stop to shoo a big black rat snake off the trail before someone ran over it. And then there was the baby copperhead, and the little rat snake that I might have clipped...

I love the picture of the leaves. The snakes - not so much. I've seen a few on our local trail sunning themselves. I've also seen them on my back porch. Given a choice, they can stay on the trail. That is a lot of snakes for one ride though.

Avoiding running over a little gopher snake is the first time I did a bunny hop that I didn't have to think about and count the steps to. It happened without thinking of it.
I'm just gonna stick my toe out here, snakes, so don't you bite me or nothin.' Just give it a little snaky lick when I stick my toe out. Okay?

This year I saw a 5 foot rattler stretched across the bike path sunning itself. Guess what happened in my Fruit of the Looms? (Cleanup by Maytag.)

A couple weeks ago my partner squished one flying over a hump in the trail :(

Gives "snakebite flat" a whole new meaning, eh?
