Next two months of our weight management challenge!

Let me know
(1) if you want to join in
(2) what your weight is on Friday the 7th of September(or whatever day works best for you)
(3) what your goal weight is for the 2nd of November - if you want to, if you don't want to set a goal like that, then no worries.

I'll post the link to the chart before the end of the week.

OOOPS - tulip is right, I shortened the 2-month challenge to one. :)

I'm in too. My goal will be to maintain since this is my travel season (I leave on Sept 11 and I am not home for good again until the end of October) AND we are moving and listing our house in the next two months too. Oy!

I don't know my current weight since I completely spaced on a weigh-in this weekend, but I'm going to set my goal for Nov 2nd as 147.

I'm going to try this again as maybe we'll start getting some cooler weather in October and I'll be able to get a bit more aerobic exercise in. September I'll be happy just to maintain, honestly. It's still killer hot here -- lows around 82-83F. :(

I'm in. Lost ten over the summer, so this would be the next step (right before marathon training first week of November.)

Current weight 09/05/12: 136
Goal weight 11/02/12: 128

That would be a pound a week.

After that, would love to maintain 128-130 for the foreseeable future.

I want to go with today's weight since the next two days won't be the norm:

Weight on 9/5: 129.8 :)
Desired weight: 125

As I get decrease my body fat percentage I will start to consider how low is reasonable. I will also be working this winter to build muscle - I am actually more concerned with changing my body composition than seeing how low I can go. Those seem contradictory goals - but I am also only 5'3...

Crankin

OK
official starting weight: 104.4
Goal: (this is kind of vague) consistent weight of 103-104 every day.
Although the upper end of my weight range (107) is lower than when I started the challenge in January, (it was 110), I just want it to be more even every day. I do eat more on the weekends, and I'm probably not going to stop eating out, but I was able to moderate my choices last winter.
Does this make sense? I've come to the conclusion it's easier for me to maintain my weight when it's not the peak of the cyling or x country ski season.

I hear ya -- seems like every time I join the challenge, my weight goes up instead of down! I am up a lb. from when I started and have not even been "bad". Then again, I haven't been particularly "good" with food, though I have been riding more than usual. It's still too hot to run here. Last year this time we were getting some rain and cooler mornings, but this year, it's steaming hot and sunny every morning. 83.5F with FULL sun when I got up at 6:45, and gets rapidly hotter after that. DH is still running, but I just can't do it. I'm weak!

But, my pattern is more important. This week was:
106.2
105.8
105.8
105.4
104.6
Yesterday I rode AND did a boot camp class. I knew that would be the only way to get my weight to where I want it. Now, I need to get it stable. DH is going away for 12 days on Sunday, which means I might have more of a chance to maintain. Of course, the Jewish holidays are during this period, so there will be some extra eating involved.

107.5 this morning -- wrong way. :(

Crankin, I think your weight fluctuations look perfectly normal and as stable as anyone can really expect. Everyone can expect to see 1-2 lbs. in water weight fluctuation during a given week without it meaning real weight gain (or loss). What I don't like with mine is that I was 106.5 last week, and this week I have been 107.5 every single day (except one lousy day at 108.0), so to me, that is a bad trend, even though it's just a pound higher -- it's really consistent. Before our August trip to the US, I was fluctuating between 104.5 and 105.5, so I have definitely gained, despite not doing anything different that I am aware of. Urgh.

Wish I could run, but it's just too hot. Mid-80s by 6:30 am and sunny every single morning, coupled with humidity. Just something I can't seem to tolerate. I have totally lost my running mojo. :(

Emily, I know the fluctuations aren't bad, but I did have a period of pretty good stability for a couple of months. Well, Friday is usually my lowest weight of the week, so I guess that's good for the challenge. I'm just tired of having to exercise so much to keep my weight where I want it. I certainly won't starve myself, and it's not like I don't want to ride or do other stuff, but for just once, I would like to be a "regular person." Of course then, I would weigh at least 20 pounds more than I do now.

132 this morning.

Maintained 132 pretty much all week, which I wanted to make sure I could do, since it was a 3 lb drop last week. I have to travel for work, and riding a century tomorrow, eating & calorie burn will be a little spikey the next couple of days. but I'll continue with the "mindful" fueling and think before I stuff (or, I will try.) When I get back next week I will hope to have maintained 132, then try another reduced calorie week for 2 weeks.

I can't edit my post, I guess there is a shorter time limit now - that's ok. I wanted to say that I am very close to being my lowest weight since I was something like 18. One more pound and I will be there. I am more concerned with my body composition right now though, and there are starting to be signs that things are changing - though my body fat % is still too high. My lowest weight since this fitness/weight loss journey began in 2010 was 128.4 in August 2011 - right before I was out with a series of over-use injuries.

Crankin - I hear you about figuring out how to change bike fuel approach. Since going Primal over a month ago this has been my biggest challenge. I think I've got it basically figured out, though tomorrow will be the first serious test of that. Right now small amounts of nitrate-free organic jerky and/or macadamia nuts and dried unsweetened cherries seem to be working just fine. "Salt Stick" capsules for electrolytes though I don't worry about that unless it is a ride >90 minutes. I am trying to eat well before the ride, and it is easier to eat more before a ride in cooler temps - at least for me it is.

107.5 again, same as last week. Not happy with it, but I had been 108 the last two days, so I will take it. It's amazing how much just a small fluctuation affects the way I feel about myself. I was in a huge funk the past two days since I the 108 is very high for me (I was 103 when we moved here in August 2011), and I have no one to blame but myself. Not eating poorly or too much, but I am sitting at the computer way too much and not getting enough exercise.

I also blame Belize's HOT HOT HOT September, though. Even the locals are saying it's the hottest one they remember. When it's already 86-88F by 7:30 am with full sun and humidity between 75-85%, it's just impossible to motivate myself to do anything outdoors. Last year this time I was running 3 mornings a week (and complaining about it being 79-80F...I would give my right arm for that now!)

I have been trying to pump up the indoor workouts with weights and a mixture of mat Pilates and yoga, but my yoga instructor is out of the country, so I'm missing those 2x a week two-hour workouts. I THINK she's back next Wed., so I may get to go to a practice on Thursday. Crossing fingers!

I also think there's very likely some hormonal changes at play. I am in perimenopause, but when we moved here, I was having frequent cycles (like every 22-26 days). Now, I seem to have moved into the next phase, where my cycles are lengthening to 40-60 days. It's quite a blessing in many ways after feeling like I was *always* on my period over the past 5-6 years, but I think my metabolism is probably slowing as well. My mother and her mother both gained a ton of weight at menopause, and that scares me a lot. But they were completely un-athletic, so I am hoping I can avoid their fate if I can just get my butt into gear with exercise. Once we move back to the US and I can get myself into some cooler weather, I am sure I will be much more active again, and then maybe weight maintenance will be easier once again. But I suspect at this age, and with menopause approaching, it will never again be like it used to be, where I could easily lose 2-5 lbs. just by cutting back a little here and there.

Sigh.... :(

Emily, I started riding as I was in the worst throes of perimenopause (the last 2 years). I got my first road bike around the time I had my last period. When I started riding in 2000, I weighed about 118-122 (if you can believe it), basically from being burned out on the exercise I had been doing for 20 years. I had gotten myself down to 110 a couple of times when I was heavier and in peri (basically for my kids HS graduations). I wasn't inactive, but it wasn't enough to neutralize the effects of hormones. I also changed the way I eat quite a bit in late 2003. I had been riding for 3 years, one year on a road bike, and I weighed about 107. At first, I was pretty happy with that weight, but I really wanted to get down to around 105. I've had to change up what I do in terms of exercise, every so often and modulate my grain intake even more since then. I just can't slack off. Given that I still enjoy red wine and chocolate and I go out a lot, it's OK, but now I can't stop going to those boot camp classes....

emily_in_nc
09-21-2012, 01:11 PM
Crankin, your experience really does give me hope. Sometimes I feel hopeless and think I will never be down even a few lbs. again, but then I know there are a lot of lifestyle issues going on here that won't necessarily last forever. Hot and sticky weather and working out are just a tough mix for me. We exercised a ton on our trip to the US in August, and I only gained 1 pound in 16 days despite eating and drinking pretty much everything I wanted (including lots of restaurant meals, alcohol, and Mom's home cooking! I couldn't say no...) So I know if I am active and eat a much more tempered, careful diet, I can take off the weight. I too enjoy wine and good chocolate, and although I eat very healthy (light on meat, heavy on veggies), I know I have to eat fewer calories as I get older except for days when I am super active. It's just quite hard to eat little enough for my low activity days here. I do ride my beach cruiser, but that's more of a "commuting" kind of riding, it's flat, and not very difficult, so I doubt it burns many calories as I've become VERY efficient in my cycling here.

Your story does help, though; and I am still a lot lighter than I was at age 39 -- I weighed around 118 then and wasn't very active, so I went back to the gym, changed my way of eating, and eventually, over a long time, got down as low as 101. I maintained in the 102-105 range throughout my 40s by staying active, and only started creeping up after we moved here.

It's slow, slow season right now, so even though our condo is on the market, we haven't had a showing in a couple of months. We hope to sell it this winter or next spring when high season tourists are here, but if not, we plan to put it in the resort's rental pool and go back to the US in May or June of next year. We don't want to be here through another summer.

Highest Friday weight in awhile. Not sure what is going on. I can't get myself to go totally paleo. Just not willing to give up all grains.
Weight is not bad, as my original goal last January was 105. However, I had quite a few months with weights of 103-104. But, I see changes in my body, like my hips seem flabby. Nothing has changed with my exercise. It's making me feel like I should switch something up in that department. It's the time of year I start running, but there's too much riding left to do and I'm not ready to open myself up to the injuries that always come with running. Going to be even more stringent with the eating for awhile.
Of course, we are going to the North End for DH's birthday tomorrow night. How can I not eat pasta?

LOL I hear ya. I have been eating healthier, but chocolate is my downfall.

Can't explain the increase in a week from 132 to 135. I rode a century Saturday, flew to Chicago Sunday, might have eaten (overall) more calories but was still thoughtful about everything I ate; ran Tuesday and Wednesday (6 miles each) and walked walked walked. Could it be muscle build from the century?

Off the scale for a while traveling. Came back and this morning was 109.5. This is way, way in the wrong direction. I have a problem. And this is with riding 400 miles this month.

Stuck at 107.5 again. However, I have some hope for the coming weeks because it is TOM starting today, my yoga instructor is now back from her training in NYC, so I'll be starting back at yoga tomorrow (first time in 3 weeks), and we're finally getting some occasionally cooler weather, so I was able to run yesterday for the first time in > 2 months. Only 2.2 miles, but it's a start.

Goldfinch, try not to fret too much...traveling is a killer. Even though we're very active when we travel, we do splurge a lot more than usual in the eating department with all the meals out. Just get back on the horse and hopefully we'll both move in the downward direction very soon!

Catrin, it's not a small family restaurant, but a very good, higher end northern Italian place. We actually went to their other location for my graduation, last year, which is on the waterfront, but could not get a reservation there. I haven't been to the North End for about a year, so this is good. We decided to splurge for the valet parking, which pretty much takes the stress away. Also, going with our good cycling friends, and we will be discussing/planning our trip to France!!!!

Hang in there and don't give up! This is when that's so important. :)

I won't. I guess it was a break from eating less than I want to eat. I'll go back to eating less again.

Oddly, I road 457 miles in September on my bike, hauling the bike around and cramming the riding in with several trips. I think that the hunger from the workouts contributed to overeating.

Alright - time to pay the piper...

I just got back from 3 weeks on the road, traveling 5 of the last 4 weeks and I admit that I've let my nutrition slip a bit recently. Top that with it being TOM and you get a lovely weight of 154. Ouch. I knew it would be up based on how my pants felt late last week so this is no daily 'blip' or anything. October will be a month of recovery and my goal remains the same. I have one more week of travel coming up, but I still intend to get back to 148 or so by the end of the month. This is, of course, assuming a lot of this is water weight from the long flight and monthly hormonal fluctuations. ;)

It isn't Friday, but this morning I found myself to be at the smallest weight since I was something like 20 years old - 128 even - I am 52 now. I am also getting stronger and starting to look more toned - yey Paleo and functional training!

The same. I know this isn't bad, but my body seems to be going through some kind of change. I've been hungry a lot and I have to think about how to kick start my metabolism or do something differently. I ran one day this week, but from the way my body felt after, not sure if I'm ready to start regularly again. Being below 105 gives me a little leeway to eat a little more liberally.

So, I figured out why last week was up - Aunt Flo. Had a big drop this week after a week of reduced calories and whole foods eating.

128 today.

Now on to Maintenance for the next two weeks, hopefully that will remain between 128-133 so my body can get used to the new weight. Amazingly, I have not had too many issues with cravings since I am eating everything very plain-jane although today is a big bake sale at work. Watch out! :p

126.5 today. 123.5 earlier this week. Can someone explain to me why, without fail, I am heavier on Fridays than I am earlier in the week? I don't mind the number, but I sure would like to understand the science.

114.2 today

I am always heavier on Fridays, and Mondays are normally my lightest, but I think that's because I'm usually out riding and very active all weekend, while during the week I squeeze in what exercise I can

Also I'm amazed by how much a glass of water can make a difference in your weight... so perhaps you're well hydrated by the end of the week?

107.0 this morning. I got lucky and lost my appetite for two days with a cold -- otherwise I had been 108 earlier in the week and was NOT happy about that at all. Hopefully now that my appetite is coming back I won't swing right back up to the higher weight. I would still very much like to be < 105 again (as I was for the past 10 years or so), but it seems to be just about impossible to get there again. I am blaming hormones!

LOL Tulip :) I have the idea that I am a lot shorter than you are...but that isn't hard as I am pretty short. If it makes you feel better, I was 129.8 this morning...darn it.

I've noticed that my weight is always when I've had a protein shake the day before, so I am thinking that there is something in it that causes me to retain water. Either that or it is the hard workout that is still causing me to retain a bit (or both). Thinking about taking some bone broth afterwards rather than the processed protein shake and see what that is like. I need SOMETHING though, especially for the group training sessions.

I don't want to do this challenge anymore. I think that when I know I have this challenge, I NEVER wind up losing weight (or I gain instead). I don't know why, but something about the reporting doesn't keep me accountable- it stresses me the heck out and then I wind up gaining or staying the same! :( If I'm not thinking about it, I always wind up losing. I'm going to put my scale away for the next month and just try to do what I know I need to do to lose weight.
I'm going to back out now and still just try to drop some lbs without the (totally made-up-in-my-mind self-induced) stress that it causes.

Great job to everyone so far, tho!!!

Getting in here really late but if its still going till Nov 2 that gives me 4 weeks.

I am in.
Weight in on Oct 5 was 320 ( I have more then a couple to lose)
Goal for Nov 2 (?) is 312.

Just to let every one know I started losing weight 3 month ago. I was 355. I eat clean and have found out I was gluten intolerant. Even at my goal weight set by my Doc after looking at a read out that has my body composite break down on it, I will weigh around 175. I stand 5'9" and truly have a large build.

I will be traveling next week. Ah the bane of the working girl!

130 up 2 lbs - the liberal maintenance week needs tweaking. Although, I have to say, it's all brainwork. The mantra has been "nutritious first" in the spirit of the "eat this not that" trend; if I go to the college cafeteria, for example, I'll have the side salad with the chicken (good!) but being in a cafeteria, cannot resist the brownies. LOL. So "nutritious first" should change to "nutritious first and who lady, do you really need dessert every night???":p

104.4 this morning. Finally back to normal. I was not feeling well (allergies, sinus stuff, a few of my auto-immune symptoms) during the time my weight was up and I should know this is a pattern. What's good is that during the time the weight was up, it remained stable, in that it was the same 4 days in a row. Very unusual for me. I've cut way back on the grains for the past few days. Tomorrow, though, I am leading a ride and will probably have a sandwich.

105.5 this morning. Lowest in awhile, thanks to having a cold and not much appetite for a week or so. At the peak of the cold, I had two days at 104.5, but that went right back up once my appetite started returning and I started eating a bit more. Have not been able to get much exercise due to feeling lousy and a bad cough, so the weight loss is probably muscle, unfortunately. Planning to get back to more exercise this week and hoping I can keep the weight creep at bay as every time it goes lower for a bit, it seems to creep back up.

First day this week under 105. Except for my 2 boot camp classes this week, all I did was walk in the woods. I was supposed to ride with a friend on Wed. and she thought it was too cold (it was 50!) so she wanted to hike. While it was beautiful, even a 4 mile walk (couldn't call it a hike) doesn't burn the calories like a ride. Well, DH is going away for almost 2 weeks on Sunday, so I will concentrate on good eating and exercising.

131.6. Way wrong direction!

Same here - 131. But it was expected, since I went to a conference and couldn't avoid the food (I just can't. For some reason, free means hoard.)

But still it's a healthy BMI and that is my main concern. Because of the conference (I commuted rather than staying at the hotel) I did not run or ride for three days.

Just trying to find a good balance of eating. I find when I do the hoarding (chipmunk-style gathering of whatever is available - shoving it in) I have a sort of addict no-consequences thing going on in my cavewoman brain. My logical brain says, that food makes you feel yucky and listless and cavewoman brain says MUAUAAARRGHHLAlaaaa arg. arg. nom.

I want to eat good, healthy foods that fuel my outdoors pursuits. I don't want to be sitting in my cube fighting the urge to go buy a box of poptarts.

For the most part, I do pretty well. But take me out of my protective arena and it's no holds barred.

128.8 this morning! I am pretty happy that my weight is staying below 130 for now, hopefully I can keep it there. Prior to my "going Primal/Paleo" my weight would fluctuate up to 5-6 pounds over the course of a day between morning and evening - these days it is fluctuating 2 pounds or less. I am happy with that. It is getting close to 3 months since my adopting the Primal/Paleo lifestyle and so far so good! I've not lost a LOT of weight - I no longer have a lot to lose - but I am starting to tell the difference in my waist and how things are fitting.

My over-all goal is 125, but really my primary concern these days is body composition. This is the time of year I start focusing more on building strength and between that and the high intensity training I really don't care where my weight goes - as long as it doesn't go up...

106 this morning, up 1/2 lb. Not too bad, but I know I've been eating too many carbs, so I feel your statement re. bread, Crankin. Barry made some excellent focaccia the other night, and I knew that I would gain if I ate it, but I did anyway. We did a 6-mile hot walk to and from town this morning (after my weigh-in), though, so perhaps I have now negated the bread. But I won't have any more.

Sorry Goldfinch. I know how that feels...and it sucks. I've been as high as 110 since moving down to Belize (after living in the 102-104 range for years prior to moving here), and it made me feel bad about myself. Clothes were tight, and I felt way too pudgy. When you're short and small-boned, it's amazing the difference just a few lbs. one way or the other can mean. Best of luck figuring out how to turn things around!

132 today, the end of the challenge. Considering how I've been eating for two weeks (mindfully, but also mindfully eating halloween treats and birthday cake from my husband's 50th) I am not disappointed, only more aware of things. It is amazing to me how tentative the balance is - calories consumed vs. burned. Being lighter, I am much faster both on the bike and running and that has been awesome. Having eliminated milk and cream (mostly) for the past few months, I feel better and less bloated. Cutting back on refined carbs has also been helpful. And making sure to eat my fruit and veggies has kept me happy. Now I just need to keep the habit up and continue to keep calories in check. I started marathon training this week for a marathon in March and my goal is to run this one faster than my last one. If I can keep my weight at the 130 mark, I think I can do this.

106.0, same as last week. I have come to terms with the fact that I am going to weigh more here than I did in the US unless I eat quite a bit less, which I really don't want to do since I think I eat healthily and not excessively. I don't want to eat too little and put my body into that calorie hoarding metabolism that can happen.

The slightly higher weight may be a result of inching closer and closer to menopause. Before we moved here in Aug. 2011, I was having frequent cycles, but now I've moved into the next phase... 40-60 days between cycles. I am 51, which I read is the average age of menopause in the US. So I think there's some hormonal stuff going on as well as it often being too hot/humid for me to get as much exercise as I'd like.

It will be kind of interesting to see what happens with my weight when we move back to the US next spring.
