Let's get this party started.
I dug around on the NBC Olympics website and found something about the men's road race being televised live on NBC at 5 am eastern time on July 28.
For those in the US, look on this page, on the right side (scroll down a bit), and you can enter your ZIP Code and cable TV info. Then you will be able to look up cycling events by date to see what is on TV, and which channel.

I only checked the schedule for the men's road race so far. This morning I realized they give a 6-hour window for the listing -- 5 to 11 -- which means it will probably be interspersed with other events.
Fortunately my DVR has plenty of room on it, so I can record the whole 6 hours.

You might want to set it to stop recording an hour later or so. Can't tell you how many times I've missed recording the end of live events that extended beyond the scheduled time slot.

Who else is watching the opening ceremonies this evening? I think this is the first time I've done so.
I am, but will have to miss the end as it's getting late here. I was really impressed, so much of it resonated for me.

It doesn't start here for 30 more minutes...and I've got to get up early to meet up with someone to go mountain biking so I doubt I will see all of it either.
I guess Mitt Romney committed a faux paux today in an interview in London, but I didn't quite hear what he said.

Yesterday Mitt said he wasn't sure that London had it all together for the games. Cameron was brilliant, saying that it would be might be easier to stage the Games "in the middle of nowhere" (i.e. Utah) than in one of the busiest cities on the planet.
Some other numpty in the Romney team told the English press that Romney had a better understanding of our common Anglo Saxon heritage than Obama.
I heard a report about where protests and political statements will and will not be allowed in London.
Please let the sport be a diversion from the politics!

Sorry, it's pretty presumptuous of a political candidate who has not been elected in office, to assume a position to even comment on another country's events while they are visiting on foreign soil. It's tasteless and lacks common sense diplomacy.

For Canada, I hope Clara Hughes (who did cycle in previous Olympics and also won medal in speed skating in a Winter Olympic) will do well in cycling to satisfy herself. She has won several Olympic medals in both sports. Her profile: http://clara-hughes.com/about-clara/
She had been struggling with depression (and has been a spokesperson for mental health).

OMFG. I'm setting the DVR, and the on-screen cable guide has "Olympics" from 5 am to SIX PM tomorrow. My choices are to record THIRTEEN HOURS or none at all. There's no way to end the recording at 11:00 or noon.
Same for Sunday, when they'll show the women's road race.
Idiots.
UPDATE: A MIRACLE HAS OCCURRED. I called Comcast to ask how I could record just a portion of the 13-hour program that was listed in the on-screen guide, and the customer service person actually was able to tell me how to do it.
I am speechless. A positive experience with the cable company.

My dish isn't quite that bad it's got Olympics from 5am until 8am and then from 8am until 6pm. I'm also not taping all that. I'm taking the F1 and GP2 stuff and will just watch whatever I can of the Olympics which won't be a good chunck of tomorrow afternoon since I just picked up a theater trailer check for tomorrow and will be at the movies watching trailers most of the afternoon (not movies, just the previews). At least the pay will be decent.

Back to our regularly scheduled thread...
Barely turned on NBC and I'm tired of the production values already.
I'm watching the West Coast feed now, and during the parade of athletes the commentary is so frequently focused on who will or won't win what quantity of medals. It kind of seems anti-Olympic spirit, at least at this point in the games, where we're celebrating the coming together of athletes. It feels like an hour of sizing up the competition and patting those who don't have a chance on the head for being so cute.
Yay for Simon Whitfield, Canadian triathlete, for being the flag bearer!
The commentary through all the music numbers was inane. Some of it is interesting (what each bit is supposed to symbolize or who developed different pieces) but after that, just go away and let us watch.
They also cut this segment: http://t.co/1o4ucLKK
Also... so many commercials! My dad called it the commercialympics opening ceremonies. So thankful for DVRs.
(Maybe watching the opening ceremonies late on a Friday night after I only got 4 hours of sleep is a bad idea ;))
I'm sorry that your coverage was so heavily edited and commented. I am hoping that the BBC will put some of the Opening Ceremony onto i-player, it was some of the most amazing television that I have ever watched and I think deserves watching in its original commercial-free form. Cycling was well represented I thought, with Bradley Wiggins opening the Ceremony and Sir Chris Hoy leading the British team out. The sequence with winged cyclists looked pretty amazing too, though that was after my bedtime. And how brilliant that the cauldron was lit by seven young athletes.
So brilliant though - The Queen taking a cameo role with James Bond, Rowan Atkinson playing with the London Symphony Orchestra, a superb segment on the NHS performed with staff and patients from Great Ormond St childrens' hospital, incredibly poignant moments with the dance routine remembering the victims of the terrorist attack the day after we were celebrating getting the Olympics. That's very sad indeed that that piece was cut from your feed, Colby.
Morning despair. I wake up early to watch the men's road race... they had it on for a few minutes and then cut to swimming, preliminary heats and women warming up for heat 1. NBC is just terrible.
Update: thanks to ny_biker, I am watching online now. Thanks. Crisis averted.

Woke up here in Friday Harbor at 6 AM, after an 11 hr. travel day yesterday, putting the Gurus together, and drinking/eating with old friends. The cable signal for NBC was almost nil, so DH just spent an hr. fixing it. We could hear the men's road race, but not see it. Now the swimming is on.
What's wrong with these people at our inn? Don't they know everyone wants to wake up at 5 and watch cycling?
Dear Rigoberto: You must learn to pay attention in the last kilometer of a road race.
What was Urán looking at? Good for Vino, though. Wish they had shown the medal ceremony instead of heat 1000 of the swimming competition. And a replay of an earlier heat. I hate NBC.

Thank you for the BBC links! Much better!! I posted before I saw Chris Hoy, too, very cool.
The cycling coverage on NBC makes me yearn for the features of the TdF broadcasts. It would be so useful to have the overview of how far back the peloton is from the breakaways, how many breakaways there are, how many athletes are in each, how many miles there are to go, and the time, on the screen much more often.
The commentary isn't bad, though, and they've been mostly showing cycling for several hours now. Very cool! It's timely that the Olympics happen so close to the TdF so people are more interested in cycling.
I am having a bit of an issue with time-delayed coverage, I either have to watch the coverage OR read the news, can't do both unless I want the result spoiled. A lot of it is still worth watching, though.

Ditto. I did not see the crash (out on a ride), just the aftermath. Heartbreaking is appropriate.
The BBC road race coverage was quite disappointing, apparently this is because they take it from a separate Olympics broadcaster. There was very little in the way of onscreen metrics and an awful lot of aerial shots of trees. I hope they improve it for the womens race tomorrow.
Just found this -- the cause was some faulty GPS... might be sorted before the women's race:

Personally I'd rather hear anyone's national anthem than all the little stories they do. Those things annoy me to no end. I want to see the events. I do NOT want to see back stories. Tell me something relative while watching the event fine, but I don't care one little tiny bit about watching a back story.

I like the medal/anthem ceremonies, but if its focused on the US, not so much. The athlete profiles should be online, on demand features, not an interruption from live coverage. [But then, how would NBC justify sending so many people to London, including several talking heads that do not know about any sport?]

I found it much more fun to watch than the mens race and I'm so glad my NBC feed showed the entire race! I was amazed there wasn't more crashing with how hard the rain was coming down. All of the repeated attacks and response from the peloton, the way the race thinned out the longer it went on, and finally the attack that broke away. I was sad to see the American drop from the pack, but what an awesome finish.

Putting that stuff on line seems like a great idea to me. I'll change the channel when those things come and hope I change it back in time to watch an actual event. I turn the Olympics on to watch the events not the stupid stories. Personally I don't think they need to send so many people over in the first place. They need 3 to 4 anchor people to be the inbetween to go to and from different events and that's it. Then they need all the individual sport announcers.
I loved the womens race today, amazing riding and even more so given the dreadful weather. Such an inspiration.
I was watching the "live" coverage on my laptop, but still ended up getting spoilers as the video dropped and restarted a few times and I stupidly updated twitter on my phone a few minutes before the end. Of course everyone watching on the tv already knew the ending.

In today's electronic age I find it impossible not to know ahead of time. London is five hours ahead of us in the east and all of my phone news apps, twitter and facebook always have the results immediately when they happen.
I set up lists in twitter, including one for bike-related people, one for Formula 1 and one for "no spoilers." If I want to avoid knowing the outcome of a bike or F1 race, I only check the no spoilers list. (Cyclists and F1 drivers tend to be fans of each others' sports, so I have to avoid both for either type of race.)
And I just don't check facebook until I've seen the race.
It's not foolproof, but it generally works for me.
I really don't understand why there is no audience for women's cycling -- there's really no difference from the men's racing, so I would think anyone interested in one would also follow the other.
One thing I noticed in both races was that teammates wore the same jersey and shorts but did not necessarily use the same helmet and bike brands. I wonder how that worked. Maybe they're allowed to choose, and they tend to choose their pro sponsors?

They tend to use the bike and helmet of their pro teams. I believe it might be a sponsoring requirement, but I'm not 100% sure.
The women's race was exciting. Since the races are less than 150km, they are more aggressive and keep attacking. That's why Sean Kelly advocates for 120km stages in the grand tours, as opposed to stages with over 200km.

The coverage was bad. I posted a link to an article in The Guardian where the BBC blames a company affiliated to the IOC for it. That company was blaming Twitter for the lack of information yesterday...
The teams wear the same jersey and shorts, but the teams are smaller. In races and stage races, you would see teams of 9. In the Olympics, the format is more restrictive in the number and the criteria to qualify. Great Britain, the US, the Netherlands had 4 women each in their team. Other teams had 3 (e.g. Brazil), 2 and even just 1. Sometimes sponsors require the riders to use their team bikes (or a bike provided by the sponsor), and it seems the same goes for helmets. Most national cycling federations are probably poor, so this works well for most countries. In the worlds, you will see the same.
I was looking through the pictures from yesterday and it seems most of the riders of Lululemon Specialized were using red helmets and the bright red bike: Evie Stevens (US), Ina Teutenberg (Germany), Clara Hughes (Canada), Emilia Fahlin (Sweden)... Ellen Van Dijk (Netherlands) was not -- she had a black S-Worlks.

My father is a big Formula 1 fan and he feels the same way about watching races on TV vs in person. It can be fun to see the event live, but if you really want to *see* the race you're better off staying home.
I DVR'd both time trials and watched them last night. The thing with the thrones was weird. Big congrats to Olga Zabelinskaya -- based on how early she started, she obviously wasn't one of the favorites in the TT.
BTW I noticed that many of the women wore makeup during the race. I wonder if they usually do that, or if it was a nod to the TV cameras.

In the LA Olympics I watched the road race and yah, it's just a zoom by. We were at least looking over a hill, so they climbed slowerly in front of us and then we could turn around and watch them zoom down the back of the hill. It was circuits too, so they went by a bunch of times.
For the TdF, my fantasy is to be on the route at a place with a TV to watch, and then run outside for the zoom past and then go back inside to watch the rest of the stage.

I felt bad for Fabian, but good for him for racing despite the shoulder injury.
Just watched the recap of the TT races online, the womens race was pretty awesome. Zabelinskaya seemed surprised every time someone came through and she just kept sitting, and smiling. Very cool. Kristin Armstrong just dominated, though.
Bradley Wiggins, same boat, he just rocked that TT from start to end. Cool for Team GB to get their cycling medals on after what went wrong for them in the road race.
Haven't watched any Track Cycling, I'll have to watch some of the replays. I wish the primetime coverage covered some of the other sports that happened during the day, or that the other NBC channels would cover some other stuff in the evenings. Even a nice hour-long Olympic recap show like the tennis ones you can catch during big tennis matches. Sometimes I don't have time to fast forward through 4 hours of coverage, but I don't want to miss key parts.
