I know 50 miles might not seem like that big of a deal but it was a milestone for me and I'm still riding the high from Sunday. :D I completed in 3 1/2 hours including my lunch stop and even though my knees weren't quite up for some of the hills, I didn't have to walk any of them. Yay me! There is no way I could have done that without having my fitting done (finally, after 3 years!) from the LBS and the amazing woman that runs it. She moved all kinds of things just a little here and there and it made all the difference in the world. 45 miles just flew by and even the last 5 with hills was more challenging than torture. I loved it! Just had to share my excitement with people who would get it. :D

So a question now, is it unreasonable to try for 65-75 miles near the end of August when 50 miles is the farthest I've ridden ever and the next farthest for this season was only 30 miles?

Sounds reasonable to me if you keep regularly riding

Congrats! Your goal sounds very reasonable to me. I jumped from 50 two Sundays ago (my longest ride ever at that time) to 65 on the next without trouble, though I'll admit I was toast for the rest of day on the 65-mile Sunday and wasn't so with the 50. I'm going for back-to-back 50s this weekend if the weather holds.

50 miles is a milestone! 3 1/2 hours in the saddle is a milestone!
25 miles more to 75. That is 50% more miles. Break it down into manageable chunks with adequate breaks. When the miles get tough (your last 5 miles) may be a time for a little look at the scenery... Riding more frequently might be as beneficial as riding farther less often, now that you know 50 is a breeze.
