View Full Version : Little Red Riding Hood in Utah

Hey Sadiekate (and anyone else who has ridden this) how do you rate this century? Would it be a good one for a slow newbie?
My aim is to do at least one if not two century rides this year and I originally thought Bike around the Buttes and the Moonlight Magic ride might be the ones. Unfortunately for riding (but good for company) I have family visiting thru out the year and my Mum's visit falls just before the Moonlight Magic so I think that one will have to be left until next year.
I need to have a ride to aim for to keep motivation up and a goal on the horizon. I have thought of just riding one on my own around here but I like the idea of riding some place new and seeing some new sights. I love Utah so I thought this might be perfect.
I am still going to try to do the Bike around the Buttes but we have a trip planned to DC around that time so I will just have to wait and see when the ride date comes out for that one.
Talking/typing ride dates how long before the rides do they normally post the registration stuff? Neither ride has this years date up on their sites yet.
Any info and advice you can offer about this ride would be great.:)

Effort wise, very comparable to BOB. I'm planning to go this year otherwise yellow might wreck some disastrous deed on me.:p Of course, by then she'll be totally aclimated to the elevation and have learned to ride flatland, so she'll kick our posteriors anyway.
Beautiful countryside, low traffic, friendly locals, good support, elevation not horrible (6,000? I can't remember). A very cute T-shirt was part of the very reasonable entry fee. Hat and shortsleeve or sleeve-impaired (:) a spazzism) jersey available for purchase. Did you see the pics of the jersey or ride in other posts? I can repost a link if you want. The MS 150 ride also covers the same roads.
Let's talk. Bubba is talking about driving the trailer out with the bikes and serving as our personal wrenchboy. I need to figure out who wants a spot reserved. We also have to figure out how many bikes can go on the trailer. This would allow the rest of us to fly or have an Amtrak party.

It was June 4th last year, the first Saturday in June and same day as the Sierra Century.
Petunia and I drove home after the ride by way of Red Rock Brewing (http://www.redrockbrewing.com/) for fish and chips and freshed brewed Root Beer, Cream Soda and Orange Soda. Alcoholic beer can be found there also, I understand.

Wow sounds like a great plan. Amtrak Im assuming is train? I love train trips.
Anyway back to topic I will have to talk to my other half when he rings next (yes he is away again) and check that he will be around. If it looks a bit iffy I will meet you all there this way if he gets sent on a trip I wont be upsetting anyones plans by pulling out. Still havent managed to work out how to balance three little ones on my bike yet and still ride so I will definitely need him home to babysit.:D
If he has no trips planned for that time I think he can mark it out early as required leave days and then unless all hell breaks loose he wont be picked out for a trip OS.
Oooh Im starting to get excited this sounds like fun and knowing faster riders means they can save some food for me at the end.:D

the cats can stay home for 2 days alone... (although i'm sure bailey would eat all the food the first day! PIG!)

Perhaps if enough people decide to go we could carpool or fly or Amtrack as SadieKate mentioned.

But Cali is down in Southern California. The Bubba/Wrenchboy plan really only works for northern Calif girls or those on the way. Petunia and I didn't drive last year because we are both better long distance sleepers than drivers.
Last year, Petunia and I shipped our bikes, flew out and rented a car. The big expense was shipping the bikes and the car rental because we had to get a Ford Escape that would fit both bikes inside. Housing was free as we stayed at Hotel MIL, but remember that just about everything is closed in Utah (pardon me, Yewtah :p) on Sunday. If you need to ship your bike back home, you have to physically be in Utah on Monday.
The Bubba/WrenchBoy plan lessens shipping and car rental costs except for mileage to drive out and the bike mounts for the trailer ($20 but we already have a few). Then, a group car rental could be focused on maximizing passenger space rather than bike storage. Yellow might even be able to help with both.
Housing is still an issue, but I'm wondering if we could recruit the bike club there to help out. Find a hotel deal or ???
Cali-- for camping info, see what the MS ride info has. They may have camped at the fairgrounds. I can't remember. Look for Logan, UT info as that is the nearest big burb to Wellsville.
I'll try to post some details about the route this weekend. As I recall, it started in Wellsville (or Hiram? what did my earlier thread say?) and snaked its was up the Cache Valley over the state line into Idaho and back.

Just checked Amtrak. The California Zephr runs from Emeryville to SLC round trip for $126 before any discounts like AAA. Checked baggage, dining and lounge cars. As I recall, Amtrak will work with groups. Just don't know how small. Perhaps we should put Snap, the Scooter-Ridin-Party-Snail, in charge.

I've taken the CA Zephyr to Reno & back a couple of times. It's a nice trip, the seats on the train are comfy, like you said there's a dining car and a lounge / observation car on the train, and the scenery over the mountain pass is lovely.
But you don't want to be in a hurry to reach your destination! The last time we went out there, the train was delayed for over an hour somewhere near Sacramento. Another time heading home, the train was about 4 hours late coming into Reno from SLC.
But that said, I think it would be fun to take the train out to SLC.

Yep realize that but if she gets stuck with camp sites etc perhaps she could drive up here and grab a lift with one of us. Still a long drive but at least she would have company some of the way.
If I decide to drive I would enjoy some company and could probably fit two bikes on the roof and one in the back of the Suburban.:)
I guess it will all depend on how many seem interested.

I loved reading about the ride when Sadiekate posted earlier this year. Daughter and I talked about maybe going this year. We can drive down in a day and a half. We talked about camping as well. So can a couple of northern girls crash the party? Would it help that I'm a Californian born and bred? And, the daughter was born there too!

The more the merrier! Maybe we should get a list going and whether a hotel room is needed. Perhaps, miss yellow will sleuth for some group hotel digs or ask about camping. She's working on her contacts. Has anyone looked at the MS Society site yet?
Sarah and Bubba - Hotel MIL
Yellow - her own digs
Veronica
BikerHen and daughter - need camping info
Cali - needs camping info with someplace that takes dogs and hubbies :p
TrekHawk?
Snap?
Jo?
Kim - hotel (flying or driving)
Marty and her son's SO - probably hotel
Who else?
The club still has last year's info up but they do state that this year it will be on June 3, 2006. 30, 62 and 100 mile options.

That would be good if you could both make it. I remember we talked about riding the Moonlight Magic but Im afraid I wont be able to make that ride this year (not good timing for me I have visiting relatives from Aust) so it would be great to catch up in Utah. Now all I have to hope is that Husband will be home and things will be looking sweet.
Does anyone know what accommodation is like out near the ride?
Im sure I will need to stay in a hotel or something with a decent bed if this newbie is to manage a ride of that distance and for after when my body decides its time to crash after 100 MILES (OMG my brain is still saying you know thats around 160 KMS are you mad).:D

Trekhawk, I feel your pain at the thought of a century. I'm right there with you! But I'm starting my training now! I'm on the trainer every day, and am outside riding when weather and work permit. I still have a long way to go but I am going to do a century this year !!!!!
Daughter thinks she is still going to be in school that early in June, so I maybe coming solo. :( Anyone between Spokane and Utah want to come along?

I'd really like to do the ride, even though it does conflict with the Sierra Century. Since I didn't meet one of my yearly goals last year -- the one about doing at least one out-of-state ride every year -- I think I have to get off my butt and plan something, and LRRH sounds like fun. I'll do the hotel thing, but don't know whether I'll fly or drive to Yewtah.
SadieKate
01-06-2006, 08:59 PM
Heck, it'll give you TWO states! Yewtah and Whydaho.:D
And you'll trade Slug Gulch for 3.2 beer!
aka_kim
01-06-2006, 09:12 PM
3.2!? I remember there were a few breweries in SLC - Squatters and ... ? Must be more after all these years. Will I have to bring my own beer? -- then I'll need some space in the Bike Bus.

My gosh! Haven't you all been chatty about this while I've been off otherwise keeping busy.
What fun we will have! I would be happy to look in to lodging options. If it's looking like you can go/are going, PM me and let me know (1) your lodging choice (i.e., camping or motel/hoteling) and (2) how many nights you might need such accommodation. And I'll do some sleuthing and see what's available between here (Salt Lake) and Wellsville that might be suitable.
Cali--you need to make a trip of it and do some mtn biking in southern UT since you'd be driving through there anyhow (there are some higher elev areas there that will still be realtively cool at that time of year). Could you haul road bikes and mt bikes and hubby and dog? :p
Re: beer....well, yes, most of it's 3.2, but there are several breweries in/around SLC that offer some tasty bevs (some of which I believe are full strength....we're still deciphering the liquor laws) and food. I look at it this way: at 3.2, I can sample more! In addition to Red Rock there is Squatters (http://www.squatters.com/index.asp)--which also has brewed-right-there root beer, martini-type drinks (as long as you also order food...can't have them at the "bar" ), and a cool four-person tandem hanging in the dining room-- and Desert Edge Brewery (which doesn't have a website), which is our fave. And there is the Bohemian (http://www.bohemianbrewery.com/), which has the best Vienna lager around. And I think Uinta has a taproom too but we haven't been there yet. So much beer, so little money.

This plan is sounding GRAND! I added the ride over on bikejournal. Perhaps those that are going could add themselves to the list so it would be easier to keep track of everyone?????
Of course, we'd still need to converse here about housing and transportation needs. Yellow, you are a dear. Let me know if you'd like me to dredge up the name of last year's ride director. She might be able to help out. I'm not sure that they had ever had foreigners at their ride before. Petunia and I certainly got the google-eye look for just about every volunteer and rider when they heard we had come from Kali-fo-nia.

OK, heeeere's some more info.
Assuming those that want to camp want to camp close-ish to the start (which is in Wellsville, UT), it looks like your best bet is Hyrum State Park (http://www.stateparks.utah.gov/park_pages/parkpage.php?id=hysp), which is about 15-20 minutes from Wellsville. Not sure about dogs; no info on the website there. There ain't no camping at the start of the ride (at least they didn't last year). I'd offer my back yard for a couple of tents but I have a dog and, well, the lawn is hers and it probably wouldn't be a very nice place to pitch a tent!
And there are a couple of approaches for the hotel/motel bit. If you want to stay close to the start, then I'm sure we could find some rooms at a chain hotel in Logan. Logan is a college town and I believe it has one bar worth going to, so there is some life there (though apparently not much). The other approach is to stay in SLC and drive to the start in the AM, which is a bit over an hour from downtown SLC, and which would give you access to a much more fun place to be AFTER the ride. You can stay at fun and kinda fancy Hotel Monaco (http://www.monaco-saltlakecity.com/) (we stayed at the one in Portland, OR) or there are the usual downtown and at the airport. I wouldn't recommend going any farther south; both the airport and downtown are close to the freeway that takes you to Wellsville. Of course one could stay up in Logan the night before and SLC for other nights. I'll probably make a trek up to Logan to check out the hotels/motels so I can make a good recommendation.
So if/when you let me know your preferred method of shelter and it's hotel/motel, let me know where you'd like to stay and if you prefer chain or unique. BTW, Hotel Monaco is walking distance to my house, a couple of coffee shops and restaurants, and a number of ornate churches.

Hey Yellow - Thanks for the info. I just need to find out if my husband wants to come along with the kids or if I will just come on my own. Im thinking it will probably be easier to just come on my own and not drag the kids thru a long drive but hey we like SLC so they may wish to come and spend the day there while I ride.
Staying the night before near the ride and then the night after at SLC sounds like a good plan but again will need to check with my husband when he next rings.
Do you think all the accommodation near the start will get booked up quickly or are the ride numbers small enough not to have much of an impact?
Thanks again

Last year, Petunia and I left the middle/east side of SLC at 6 am and made it to the ride in time (we had no city streets to drive though). Gave us a good excuse to go to Red Rock Brewing after. Wellsville itself had no real business district that I remember. As yellow said, Logan is pretty much "it" for the entire valley.
I highly recommend that the 100-miled riders are on their bikes at 8 am. Only about 75 of us did the 100 mile route so the rest stops get closed up fast and riders sagged in on the posted schedule. It is plenty of time to finish the course, but no dawdling. Also, the earlier you finish, the more food.:)

I'm going to have to work out the logistics on this
The Amtrak schedule shows it takes 17 hours from Emeryville to SLC  assuming it arrives on time, which it won't. Which is probably just as well since on-time arrival in SLC is about 3 am.  It might even make sense to get a sleeper car on the Amtrak, that could be kind of neat.
I would not try to arrive on Amtrak the morning of the event, especially if it's about a one-hour drive to the start from SLC. Based on my past experience, I would not be surprised if it arrived several hours late. Plus then there's the question of how to get around, so I (and whoever else might be with me) would probably have to rent a car.
According to Google Maps, the drive from my home (Union City) to SLC is about 13 hours, not including stops. I've never driven that kind of distance myself, and even driving from home to Portland (a bit shorter distance than to SLC), where Lee did most of the driving, I wasn't exactly up to riding a century the next day  But it would be nice to have a car when I got there. Lee has graciously offered to let me take the LeeMobile, which could carry 2 more passengers and 2 more bikes, or one more passenger and several more bikes. It could be fun to do a convoy with Bubba if schedules work out.
So, if I take Amtrak or drive I'd have to head out a couple of days ahead if there's any hope for me to remain upright for the ride. So that means head out Thursday, arrive either late Thurs or sometime Friday (if I decided to sleep someplace onroute), and reverse the procedure on Sunday, so that I'd be back home on Monday, back to work on Tues.
That might work, depending on my work schedule. I'm accumlating lots of time off right now. :D

Hey Jobob your schedule sounds a lot like mine. I was thinking if I drive that I would leave Thursday and stop overnight somewhere and arrive on Friday with time to relax and recuperate for the ride. Im still unsure if my Husband and kids want to come along but should know soon (my husband is away at the moment). If I go on my own I would love some company for the drive.
Perhaps you could pick me up on the way or you could drive to my place and get a ride with me. As I mentioned before if I take the Suburban could probably fit two bikes on the roof and one in the back depending on the amount of luggage we all have.

Hey Leslie - that could work out well. The good news is, we have plenty of time to work this all out.
Yellow, thanks for the hotel sleuthing !
Since we'll all have bikes, it would be good to find a place that either lets us take the bikes into our rooms, has secure bike storage, or secure parking where we could leave our bikes in/on the vehicles and not have to worry whether they'll still be there the next day.
I'm not too concerned about distance from the start, but I'm a compulsively early bird so I'd probably want to get an early start, so staying in Logan Friday night would probably make sense. It would be nice if we wound up someplace close to our apres-ride festivities on Saturday night though. So I suppose those of us so inclined could stay Friday night in Logan, check out and head for the ride, then stay someplace in SLC Saturday night. I'm fine with a chain motel.

Ride start was 8 am for the 100 milers. Good thing was there was night before reg packet pick-up in SLC. Hat sales were the same morning. Jersey sales were via active.com and were part of the reg packet pickup.
About 85 miles from SLC to Wellsville. Freeway all the way.
Yellow, as I recall we headed north along the valley till we took a sharp turn east to go through a pass into the Cache Valley. Are there more hotels/motels out there about where we turned? Was that Bountiful? What was that town? I was just following the 5 cars with bikes so I didn't really notice.
If I took Amtrak, I'd be going out on Thursday also. If you don't need to ship your bike via Fed-Ex or UPS, you can leave on Sunday. The one good thing about Amtrak is you should be able to sleep a lot.
Also, remember that if Bubba can haul several bikes, flying and then renting a multiple passenger car becomes much more fiscally reasonable.
SK
Adding that in an SUV with bikes on the back, we drove from SLC to Davis in 10 and a half hours including puppy and gas stops. Bubba doesn't take any other breaks. Towing a trailer will take him longer.

SadieKate - so you cant start any earlier? What time do they close the course? Im just a little worried that I may not make the distance before they start shutting down. Not too concerned about being out there on my own but if others are waiting for me to drive to SLC for after ride activities I could become a bit of a nuisance to all.

Hey Thanks Jobob I will keep that in mind as an option if I feel I wont make the distance in the required time. The speedy girls better save us some food. Thats the punishment for being swift riders they have to feed the slow pokes when they make it in.:D

The way the course snakes around you can always change your mind mid-course. The 65 and 100 miler share the same rest stops. The 100 miler visits the lunch stop twice, before and after the loop through Whydaho.
I need to go track down the map. It probably has more info about start and close. I suppose if you have your reg packet early you could start. Just beware that the rest stops might not be open,k but I know you know that.
TrekHawk, just keep you tme in the rest stops very short. The only one that was crowded was the first one. Petunia and I didn't leave until 8:30 or 8:45 because we screwed around a lot and stopped for photos which means we hit the first stop with everyone. If we had left on time we would have been ahead of the crowd. Now, mind you, there were only 875 or so riders so "crowded" is relative. As usual though, it was the line for the elephants that was the problem.

Thanks SadieKate - if they didnt mind I would probably like the idea of heading out earlier and having a bit of extra time up my sleeve to complete the course. I really do hope to finish the century so this might be a good plan. Im not one for lounging around at stops (not fast enough for that) I just visit the LOO, then eat/drink and Im out of there. How many rest stops do they have? Did you stop at all of them?

SK, you won't find your map 'cuz you gave it to me!
I don't have scanning capability, but I'll see what I can do tomorrow when the Utah world reopens. It's not the best quality so it may not scan all that well.
According to the map, here are some race logistics that should answer some of TH's questions:
There were three routes last year: 30, 60, and 100 miles. The 100 mile route has 4 "official" stops. The 60 mile route has 3 official stops. The 30 mile route has only one.
The 30 and 100 follow the same route up until about mile 24. They have the same first stop at about 20 miles. The 60 mile route's first stop is at mile 27.6; it splits from the other route at mile 18.2 (but comes back to join it later). There is a restroom (aka LOO, ELEPHANT) at mile 13.1 for all routes.
The second stop for the 100 is at mile 35. The location is the same as the first stop for the 60. The second stop for the 60 is at mile 35.5. This is the "lunch stop location".
The third stop for the 100 is at mile 48.8. This is the "lunch stop" location. The third stop for the 60 is at about mile 56 (the map neglects to show the mileage at this stop). This is the last stop for the 60.
The fourth and last stop for the 100 is at approx mile 80.
You only get to ride in Whydaho if you do the 100!
Ya stop at the stops if you wanna stop. I usually have to stop at all stops if I'm properly hydrating myself! (are there good willow patches on the route??? )
SadieKate

That must be why I just found it in the Oregonia mountainbiking route stash! Must have tucked it in there way back in September.
Yellow's got it right. The route snakes and snakes and snakes up to Whydaho. The third stop in Lewiston, Yewtah, is visited twice by the 100-milers. You ride a 20 mile loop into Whydaho between the two stops at it, so it is easy to reduce your ride to 80 -- certainly still a good ride.
I have several photocopies here. You want one? PM your snail mail address. I have a scanner at work and at home but neither is set up, so you'll have to wait for Mr. Postman (er, Postperson). The map describes all 3 routes and isn't easy to follow but you'll understand it with patience.

How fun is this? I'm working on my schedule for this year and thought I would post on te to see if anyone had done the RRH. Well low and behold, you are already discussing it and planning trips from all over the west. So it must be a great race if ya'll are willing to make a weekend trip for it.
Long story short, thanks to your pure enthusiasm I will register for this one as soon as it becomes open. Sounds like so much fun.
I'm not as experienced to the cycling world here in Utah as it sounds like Yellow is (I'm new to cycling, still learning to clip in without freaking out.) Also, just a word of warning. The Salt Lake Marathon/half marathon/5k and bike tour is the same day as RRH, June 3rd. Therefore, if you plan to stay in downtown salt lake, there will most likely be some road closures, traffic as there was last year. Its a very popular race. Not sure how it will affect the hotel situation...since I'm not into the runners world I don't know how many will travel in for the marathon.

I googled the website for the marathon
http://www.saltlakecitymarathon.com/
and came across this helpful tidbit in a press release :
The results of an extensive weather analysis of 30 years of weather history for April, May and June shows us that June has a significantly better chance of clear skies and pleasant temperatures. The first Saturday in June shows average temperatures of 54°F at 7:00 a.m. for the marathon start and 70°F by 1:00 p.m. at course closure …..well within a comfortable range for participants.
Here's a map of the route (http://www.saltlakecitymarathon.com/exec/salt/course.cfm?publicationID=217). The good news is, the marathon route extends from SLC southward, while Wellsville and Logan are north of SLC.
Might make things a bit more complicated, though :p

that's quite an odd spread! you'd think they woulda put them at 25, 50, 75 for the 100... 20, 48, 80 is odd (and a big gap for the end of the ride!)

Hi, Sulis. Last year I saw several TE jerseys but none of the wearers seemed to know about this forum so spread the word!
Cali, this is RURAL Yewtah not megalopolis SoCal. You takes your rest stops wherever there is a village/park/elephant. The good news is that the population and traffic are low so the riding is relaxed, the air is clean and you can look up at the scenery.
Here is a nice article on bicycling in the Cache Valley.
http://www.utah.com/schmerker/2001/cache_valley.htm
A map to help everyone locate Wellsville. Ogden would have a lot of amenities. I suspect that the Marathon will affect housing and restaurants only. The Cache Valley is about 85 miles northeast of SLC. Tons of women commuted from SLC the day of the ride. Didn't even need a map to find the start, just followed the bikes.

It's rare to have more than 25 miles between stops on a century ride (double centures are of course another matter, since those people are tough ;)). And the 100k's 1st stop is nearly 30 miles in - my crystal ball is showing "tons" (ie, bunches of 16 women) hunting for elephants all along that road.

i don't live in the megalopolis part of socal... i live in BFE... the desert... often nothing but cactus... cactus... and more cactus for miles!
i was just saying it's a loooooong way between stops.. and there are other ways of accommodating (porta potties)... the ride i just did saturday was in an area with NO facilities except at the start (and even those were porta potties)... they rented 2, put them trailers... and towed them out to the two rest stops! i was actually more concerned about food for that length of time! i get hungry and then i get fatigued....
if i'm able to do this... i'll have to be sure to stock up (stuff my handlebar bag) at the sag stops for between times...

I know you live in the boondocks; I was teasing. But sometimes you can't place rest stops based on mileage markers.
I don't remember any rest stops being too far apart. Plus, I always carry enough snacks that I can survive if I don't find anything digestible.

You will LOVE Little Red. I did it last year as my very first organized ride. BBTC does a terrific job marking the course, the weather was perfect and the rest stops were terrific. It starts and stops in Wellsville's park, which is a really cute, restful place. The guys dressed up as wolves are funny too (at least one rides the course "chasing" all of us "little reds").
I am a very slow rider who did the 35 mile option last year. I am going to do the metric century this year, so I hope I can be added to "your group". I have other friends in the area who will be coming with me. Some will go the 100 miles, others less.
Lodging: I stayed in Logan at the Days Inn the night before. It wasn't spectacular, but it was clean and I slept well. It appears to be full right now so I am off to a Super 8, Ramada Limited, Hampton Inn, Crystal Inn, Comfort Inn or the Utah State University Inn. There appear to be lots of choices, in many price ranges.
A drive from SLC to Logan that morning wouldn't be too bad, but I would rather be in Logan and drive the 15 minutes or so to the start. It would be worth it to me to stay in Logan.
Let me know if you have any other questions, or if I can be of help.

Last year, there was a sign saying the 2006 Little Red was going to have some type of costume thingy. Don't rush out and make your tech fabric cape yet as I think it would be good to wait until bbtc announces the details. Just wanted to tell you of that possibility.

Hmm, I don't remember this sign! On the other hand, I'm not the type to wear a costume for 100 miles so it just got lost in the open space between my ears. Anything that flaps drives me bonkers. I'm thrilled in the winter when I can stick my wind vest under a kodiak cycling jacket.

UGH! shoes! no!!!!! i could never mail order shoes (that i haven't tried on first in a "real" store! 7 in "this" brand... 7.5 in "that" one... 8.0 i "thatoneoverthere"
UGH!
i actually had to get an XS (men's) jersey from the las vegas century... the pactimo brand ran so big! and hubby... who buys/wears a large in every brand.. had to get a medium!
one more "comparison".... i always get medium performance brand jerseys (and medium WOMEN's voler) i have to remember which brand i get which size! (then they'll change it all for this season, probably!)

Hey I guess if enough of us from TE are riding and ordering Jerseys we could always do a swap if some dont fit.
SadieKate
01-12-2006, 03:59 PM
They do a post-ride order of the jerseys also, so you can always turn yours in and wait for the next order. I ordered a large which was huge on me and was turning it in as a woman walked up wanting to exchange her medium for a large. Kharma.
Jersey sizes for me
-I wear a medium in Pearl Izumi, Terry and Voler, though the Voler is tight across the chest.
-I wear a large in Castelli and Hincapie.
-I wear a medium in Shebeest if it is a loose cut and a large in their more formfitting jerseys. The Wahini I can't breath in. They forgot to design that jerseys for boobage.
If you go back and look at the LLRH pics from last year, you'll see me in a large Velo Bella jersey made by Castelli. This will give you an idea of my build. I'm the vertically-challenged brunette.

The AV jersey ran a little small and the LLRH jersey ran a little large, as measured by Voler. The statement of the BBTC web site about the jerseys running small is kind of odd.
hmm, I pulled out a bunch of jerseys and none of them are consistently sized.

I haven't received any PMs about lodging... I am working on finding reasonable lodging all together in one motel but I have no idea how many rooms we're talking about. So if you plan to motel/hotel it in Logan on Fri night, let me know if you haven't yet booked and what you'd like (e.g., one bed, two beds, one room, 20 rooms). The club sponsoring the ride doesn't have rooms blocked or anything, so what I am hoping to do is find a good spot with lots of rooms...then motelers can then call and make reservations. Unless of course you don't all want to be together. :p
For the campers it is Hyrum Lake State Park. You can make reservations no sooner than 16 weeks prior to your stay date online here: http://www.reserveamerica.com/jsp/commonpage.jsp?goto=/client/UTT1_state.html. I recommend you put "make campground reservations for LRRH" on your calendar for mid-February.
Also, FYI, the race director tells me this:
"We are going to keep the course open longer this year for any of your friends that were concerned about not having enough time to finish the century. It will be officially open until 5:30. But we won't kick anyone off the course that is within 10 or so miles of finishing at that time."
So no worries, ladies. And, if you bring any boys/men along, the club is working on a "Big and Bad men's t-shirt". Hmmmmmmm............

Question: What is the difference between a "club fit" and "race cut" jersey?:o
caligurl
01-18-2006, 07:22 AM
club fit is a looser fit... race fit... closer.. tighter
i like my jerseys not tight.. so in voler race fit i got/get medium women's... stagecoach's were club fit and i ordered medium... the shoulders are perfect.. the the hip area is huge on me  if i didn't work out and have muscles... i could get away with small.. but i think a small may be tight just on my shoulders
oh well...

Leslie,
There is an unaffiliated cycling log and forum over at www.bikejournal.com. Basic membership is free, but there are cool functions available to premier members for only $20 per year. You can sign up, log your rides, indicate club membership and indicate which centuries you plan on riding. There is also a forum and you can track your bikes, mileage to tires, etc., etc., etc. Go have a look-see.
By the way, the site is co-ed and even more well-behaved than we are ;) so no fears of some of the stuff that goes on at other forums.
1) Join bikejournal
2) join Team Estrogen's club
3) "Join" the LLRH ride

I checked out the web site for the day spa as well. Nice, but like you said expensive. I'll just have to settle for the hot tub back at my hotel. :p
I don't know if the ride sponsors are having a pre-ride dinner but that doesn't mean we can't plan one for ourselves. I don't know who all is staying in the area the night before, but we should definitely plan to get together - so we can plan our ride strategy.:D
As for training, right now I'm spending time on my trainer everyday and trying to get out on the road once or twice a week. Road riding is cold and kinda messy right now so I'm on my mtb for those rides which is probably good training for me. I have a 33 mile route that I'm doing once a week now, and have a 50 mile route that I hope to work up to by April. There is one organized ride in the area the end of April. I'm going to do the 50 mile ride, and it has some major climbing.
So basically I'm just going for miles, miles, miles on the bike. :p
And . . . My reservation are made and the entry form mailed so I am good to go! BikerHen

This last fall (October) a friend and I participated in the 19th annual Yellowstone Bike Tour. Who puts it on just flew out of my brain, but they sponsor a spring ride in May as well. We ride from West Yellowstone, Montana in to Old Faithful for thirty miles, then back if one desires. There is limited sag support. I mean they do have several vehicles that keep an eye on the riders and will help with any mechanical problems, but they don't have much in the way of food. My friend and I just packed our own goodies and didn't have any problems at all. I did the full ride and it came out to a bit over sixty-two miles. My friend, a beginner, called it quits at the halfway point. The elevation varies from 6200 feet to around 6700 feet and can be a problem to those not used to it. Going in to Old Faithful seems to be more difficult, as the ride back went rather smooth despite a headwind. There is still the normal park traffic to deal with, but in early October it isn't too bad. There isn't a time limit on when one has to finish and some take all day! We just took it easy and enjoyed the beautiful scenery, the buffalo along the side of the road, the steam from the geysers and the wonderfully pine scented air. There is a free spaghetti feed the evening after the ride for tour participants and we found it to be rather lacking. (Cold noodles and not enough bread and salad.) If anything, that would have to be my only gripe. Other than that, cool ride, awesome scenery, a long-sleeved tee and good company made for a good ride. I am thinking of doing it again this year.
The park also opens the roads to bikers only once they plow the snow off. This is usually a few weeks before they offically open the park.

looks like we're driving and staying in Sandy, Utah with Andrew's friend - about 90 miles from the ride start. Will be an early morning for me. Hope there is Starbucks in Sandy. Anyone know anything about that town? He moved there for work....
Andrew and his friend will be MTB'ing while the girls are riding. Any suggestions near the Wellsville area for MTB?

Cindy Sue - I actually live in Sandy. It is quite a large suburb. Since I don't know exactly what part of Sandy you are staying in I can't say for sure what is around you. But yes, you can find Starbucks - stand alone locations and some of the Albertson's has them. There are also other coffee stands throughout the city.

Wondering who travelled the furthest to participate in today's Little Red Riding Hood Tour and to announce that at least 10 riders were from Pocatello, ID and 3, that I know of, came from Idaho Falls. So watch out, Utah, the Idahoans are coming!
Whoo hoo! I was wondering when we'd get the first LRRH reports! Looking forward to many more. Hope you all had a great time. L. :D

Yes! Had a great time. Took a bit to figure out that LR with arrow spray painted on the road meant "Little Red" and the direction to go next.... I thought it was "left or right" for those of us who can't tell our left from our right.... HA, just kidding!!
I decided that I could have done the Century, but now that I know the course will likely do it next year. Our whole group had fun and not a flat tire in the bunch!
For those interested: Pocatello's ICE (Idaho Cycling Enthusiasts) is hosting the "Tour of Marsh Creek Valley" June 24 (26, 60, 100) See the following for more information: http://www.idahocycling.com/events/tour/2006/files/Tourflyer06.pdf
Thanks to all who made Little Red the success it was- I will definitely be back!

Hey there! I think my friend and I met you early on in the ride. We drove up from San Diego to participate in this ride and, boy howdy, we had a blast! We're already planning for next year! Although, we'll probably fly next year. The drive was really gorgeous ... Utah and northern Nevada are beautiful ... and worth it (!), but it was a long one, that's for sure.
And btw, if you were the group we met early in the ride, we had a blast riding with you. If I'd known you weren't gonna stop at the first set of porta-potties, we'd have kept going too. Thanks for a fun conversation and a really fun line.
And to the organizers ... woohoo!!
