I didn't post this on the other Tour thread because I haven't yet watched today's TT and didn't want to be spoiled, but this blog post is wonderful -- really sums up why the TdF is like no other in cycling, and why pro cycling is unlike any other sport. Hope you'll enjoy it like I did:

This puts it perfectly, and helps explain why WE love and watch cycling events on television. The scope and the beauty and the bravery of the cyclists...nothing else like it anywhere.
And Phil and Paul and Bobke of course. :p

The one thing not mentioned (which makes grand tours so interesting to me) is that there are several competitions within them: general classification, sprinters, climbers, stages wins, team competition, youngest riders, most combative and even the lanterne rouge.
