that red bridge is very aesthetically pleasing (and pretty cool). :) But $24 million?? WOW! I think a bit too expensive. I could have built them something for 1/6 of the cost. ;)
We have one new pedestrian/bike bridge in our town. Over the new 6 lane highway that passes through our downtown area (the old highway was a raised 4 lane highway and it was crumbling).
While it's functional and pretty, there's huge curbs at either end that you have to stop and get off your bike to traverse. Obviously they weren't thinking of cyclists when they did this one...although it's labeled as a bike bridge and is part of a bike path system.
It's called the Sky Dance bridge and is based on our state bird- the scissor tail flycatcher.
It was only $5.3 million.

So they finally finished it? I remember there was a lot of controversy about it as I was leaving Calgary in early 2010. Personally, I think they could have used a bridge down near Glenmore Trail or Heritage Drive a lot more.

Bill topped out to $26 million.
Now there is another new bridge being built east of new East Village area.
Most likely Heritage Drive could use a new bridge. I dislike going under a very low underpass to get to the area. But I don't know the whole area down there that well yet.
One could do a whole book, blog on exclusively bike-ped bridges in terms of design. I agree it doesn't have to be at a huge cost either.
I love the work of Santiago Calatrava! (the blog got the name wrong) True, it is expensive, but some of such works become tourist destinations. For example, he built a wing of the Milwaukee Art Museum which is iconic and definitely worth a visit to Milwaukee. The museum collection by itself isn't. I was sad the "Spire" building that had been in the plans for Chicago was not built.

Duh, thanks for the name correction. I made the change.
Here's another bridge he did in Madrid that my partner saw during his cycling trip in 2011:

That is a very unique bridge. It reminds me of a toy we used to play with as kids. It looked like this bridge and you would stick your finger in it and a friend would stick their finger in the other end and as you tried to pull it out it grasped tighter and tighter onto your finger. Can't recall the name of that toy but it did look like that bridge.

These? I knew them as Chinese finger cuffs.

Yup, that would be them! I couldn't recall the name and for some reason Chinese Firecracker stuck in my head and when I googled it I only got fireworks. Thanks for the link. I never liked them as a kid and thought they were dumb. But it does bring back the memories and I still think that bridge looks like one.
