A funny thing happened to me today ....

I wanted to share a funny (as in slightly strange:rolleyes: ) thing that happened to me yesterday when I went cycling with hubby.

We decided to take the long NYs weekend and go to cycling nirvana (aka Canberra, Australia's capital city) with the kids. Hubby and I went cycling yesterday morning around Lake Burley Griffin which has a nice 25km track right around it, and saw to our amazement, a cop breath testing a cyclist!!! It was New Year (Jan 1), and we hadn't seen why the cyclist was being breath tested. Maybe for reckless cycling!:o

I was interested to hear if any of you gals have ever had this happen to any of your cycling friends?

Last Thursday, my sister, who lives in Carlsbad, CA, walked their dog behind the subdivision. On the steep part of the trail, she saw a bike in the brush and just beyond a body. The man didn't respond so she got my brother-in-law, who couldn't get him to respond, and they ended up calling 911.

The emergency responders breathalized him just to ensure he wasn't still intoxicated. If he had still been intoxicated, they would have dried him up before releasing him for his safety as well as others.

Turns out, the man was so memoryless, he left his mtb!

He must've been in a fine mood, since he didn't talk to anyone.

Yep, I used to work with someone who got D.I.C.ed on a bike. I believe she was making her way home from a student party.

So does that mean that it's illegal to ride your bike if you're a bit sloshed? And it's ok for the police to breath test you if you ride suspiciously wonky?! I guess if you're endangering someone else on the road, it makes sense.

Dunno about your area, but it certainly is in here (Canada).

A bicycle is a vehicle, and anyone at the commands of a vehicle on the public road has to be sober.

Here in California, cyclists are subject to the same laws as cars. Yep, it can happen.

One day last summer along the MONON, I came across several men helping another man who obviously toasted his bike and they were trying to convince him to get help as they'd found him unconcious when they came across him. He reeked of alcohol and as much as admitted to only having a "couple" at a local bar right off the MONON in Broad Ripple. He wasn't wearing a helmet so he had a head injury. I don't know what else came of him, but the guys at least got him convinced into them taking him HOME instead of him trying to ride the rest of the way.
I had some baby wipes that I'd carried with me and offered to let them help clean the road rash off him [face and shoulders] HeMan started fussing, "That's gonna hurt like hell" It didn't even have alcohol in it but he definitely did.

Sometimes those cyclists are folks who've lost their license to drive due to DUIs. Have bike, will travel, will crash bike. :eek: L.

You can get a DUI for biking drunk and public intoxication for walking drunk. My friends and I were once "pulled over" by bicycle cops while walking home from the bar. They claimed one of us staggered but I don' t think so. I'm not really sure what you're supposed to do if you're not allowed to walk home after drinking ???

NM is the same way - a bike is a vehicle, if you're drunk on a bike it's a DUI. as for the car dui's that now have to ride - there is a guy I pass about once a week riding his bike home from the grocery store, no helmet, no lights, disregarding traffic laws, toting a 12-pack of beer under 1 arm. *shakes head*...will they never learn?

Maybe his gene pool will get snuffed out someday. The cops need to ticket him.

AZ is the same as NM - bikes must obey all traffic laws & are regarded as slow moving vehicles. (HEY! I resemble that remark!)
