Are these any good as they are popping up on all kinds of bikes now, even in LBS bikes up to 1000 dollars or so.

Was in Wally World today and found a FS bike with X-7 SRAM parts. Couldn't find the bike online to show it but the suspension was again..a Suntour fork and a crappy "one hard hit and the rear suspension blows out" rear shock part. Just wondered how SRAM got into the Wally World business. My 900 dollar Mamba only has X-3 or X-5 parts. Not near the bike to see for sure.

I also probably sound crazy wondering why the Wally World bikes have better looking graphics and frame colors. The LBS world is full of drab color schemes, racing stripes and boring WSD bikes. Even the basic women's bike frame colors were actually pretty sweet. Edgy but girly.

Obviously the part quality is why they are Wally World bikes, but are the frames substandard and a safety hazard? Part of me wanted to buy the bike for the frame and build it up.

The Paint scheme may be due to that nature of the Business : I.e. at Wal-mart, you're strolling by the toy section, and the Bike's Colors say "Buy Me!". LBS bikes are probablt duller due to fact that they don't need to grab your attention that much (after all, why did you go to the bike shop in the first place? :) )
As far as Frame quaility, there's probalby no way of knowing without buying it and stripping it. I'm going out on a limb and assuming this is not a "Gas pipe special" with Ashtubla cranks. I would probably make sure you can fit a decent shock on it before taking it home.

Wally world bikes are heavy - really heavy. I rode one (okay it was K-mart but same bike more or less) for about three years before I got my Cannondale. I never really had any problems with it until I wrecked it (totally my fault - not the bikes) and will still use it when I am pulling the Tug-A-Bug and trailer.
