I'm in.
Weight 162.3 (well, that's what it was this morning)
No set number as a goal.
My goal is to continue doing bodyrock.tv 4 days a week and continue building muscle and definition like I have been.
Thanks, Posse. :)

I am in - at 135 this morning. Considering all that I am doing I've no set goals right now but I need this accountability.
My intention this summer is to continue to change my body composition as I can while increasing riding and mountain biking activities. I still would like to see 130 but I am starting to think that might be unrealistic given everything.

I'm in for maintenance. Yesterday, I was 105.4 before I left for my trip. I've been up a bit this week and I can't figure out why. I haven't seen 104 in 10 days.
Goal is to maintain 105, not to see over 106.

Another in for maintenance. Today I am 103.5. Goal is to maintain within two pounds of 104. And to do like Catrin, work on changing my body composition.

Goal remains 140.
Someone please tell me that menopause will mean the end of monthly-water-weight-gain-for-no-good-reason. I've been doing this for 35 years now and I am beyond over it.
And thank you again for doing this!!!

I sure hope so. My pattern of bloating over the last few years has been rather odd. Thanks to the Pill, I get my periods on a Friday. On Wednesday of the week before my period, I bloat up by at least 3 pounds. I then spend Friday going to the bathroom. By the end of the following week--when my period actually starts--I've bloated up again and usually spend the following Tuesday going to the bathroom. So, all told, my bloat lasts a week and a half out of a four-week cycle, no matter what I eat or drink or how much I exercise. This is unacceptable!!!

I will be here again. Mainly for maintence..I have been going between 138-141. Hope I can stay there. I am changing the way I eat though because I think the paleo way was making me feel very jitery, decreased my memory and I was not sleeping well at all. I was eating paleo for several months ( probably 90 % paleo) and could not figure out why I was so anxious for no reason and my memory for simple things was gone. I did some research and it confirmed what I already knew.
So far after 1 week of eating more carbs I feel far better and have been sleeping again.:D My boss was telling me one of her co-workers at her old job had the same experience with the Paleo way of eating and had to stop. I know some of you strong paleo followers will say just eat more fruits and veggies to up my carbs. I tried that but still felt very anxious...like I was about to give a speech or start a race. I felt that way all of the time. After reintroducing rice and whole wheat noodles back into my diet I feel great and can actually remember my patients' names again. :)
Oh..my weight now is 140

I am going to sit this one out. The heat, and my ensuing lack of tolerance for running, is making me crazy, and I can't lose an ounce. I will still read the thread, and I might chime in from time to time, but it messes with my mind to have my failures documented in a spreadsheet. I can't seem to lose here, and even 1 lb. fluctuations in the wrong direction mess with my head when I have to' 'fess up to them here. It's hard enough in private. :(

This happens to me every year! In winter I am 112-113 and now I weigh 119! In winter I train short and intensive, in spring I did a lot of base (endurance) training: long hours, low intensity. Also in spring and summer I ride a lot and travel a lot. That means to hell with dieting and restrictions. I don't feel heavy, I am ok on the bike but I would like to go slowly under 115 again :( This is not going to happen because I'm afraid to lose power, and before and after every ride or race I recover by carb eating.
This is not fair and everybody tells me that it's not possible to gain weight if I ride this much. But the scale does not lie. I should be stricter in my eating and I should eat more protein and less carbs (especially sugar) and more raw vegetables.
Anyway, tomorrow I have a race, so I'm going to engulf on some pasta now.

Sounds like me, Anelia! I also have a big problem with fresh fruit. It's about the best thing where I live (pineapples, papaya, mango, and bananas with real flavor, not like what you get in the US), and as a result, I eat WAY more fruit than I ever did in the US. And being a high sugar food, I am sure that has had an impact on my weight. I am going to try to cut back a bit on it. Although I love it, I am probably eating more than I should. I ate more veggies in the US, where there was a much better variety available to me.

Wow, that's really interesting. I'm the exact opposite. I was having memory issues before I went paleo (which are now resolved) and sleep WAY better now than I ever did on a conventional diet. Though, I'm not low carb. Not even a little. ;) I eat plenty of fruit and potatoes (and the occasional white rice in sushi) so I'm probably not your typical paleo case.
OK, so count me in again. I'm at 151 still. This time, I'm going to actively try to lose weight. I'm cleared to swim, so there is at least one form of cardio that I can do now! My goal for the end of June is 144.

Potatoes on a paleo diet?
I do not understand this diet. Someone at work recently started it and the logic seems very twisted to me.
GLC1968
05-14-2012, 10:52 AM
Yeah, I eat potatoes - most paleo people don't. Potatoes (unlike grains and legumes) don't have any substances in them that attack the digestive system. They are higher in starch/sugars, but as an endurance athlete, those are needed. The Paleo Diet for Athletes recommends things like sweet potatoes/yams and bananas as good fuel for longer endurance efforts.
Of course, my habit of eating them even while injured is exactly the reason I haven't lost any weight in the past 3-4 months. ;) Great part of the diet when exercising a lot...not so much when mostly sedentary! Though, based on solobiker's experience, maybe they are helping me sleep better at least. :)
Paleo can be low carb, but it doesn't have to be. And like any other type of nutrition plan, there are some grey areas about what is good/acceptable and what isn't. Everyone falls onto the spectrum in different places. That's why some drink raw milk, some don't. Some eat pastured butter, some don't. Some eat rice or quinoa, some don't. Some eat potatoes, some don't. Some eat honey, some don't. It's not like 'you have to eat exactly this and nothing else or you will burst into flames, get fat, die tomorrow or shrivel up and waste away'...it's a guideline. Of course, some people are WAY more militant about it than others. I started out pretty strict and then slowly added in different things to see how my body reacted. How I eat now is a result of 9-10 months of experimentation and knowing that if I'm too crazy strict about things, I won't stick with it over the long haul.
Plus, people who are just starting out tend to be 1) more strict and 2) more vocal. (I certainly was). ;)

Just curious. Do you find you get much weight related to the heat? Whenever I spend time "down there", Caribbean, two weeks a year usually, I find a really retain a lot of water. Every time I get on the scale when I get home and and  but it always drops off after I return to my regular PNW climate. It can affect my clothing fitting buy a full pant size. I retained over 6# of water when I was three weeks in the Grand Canyon last year. Heat Edema is what it is officially called.

I started a bodyrock (http://bodyrock.tv)30 day challenge 2 weeks ago, and today was my 2 week mid-challenge test. I did the same fit test I did on day one and I'm so pleased to see my strength increasing.
In the same amount of time I'm able to do 4 more burpees, 8 more boy push-ups, 9 more elevated tricep dips, and 6 more elbow-to-knee elevated ab crunches.
I am starting to see definition (just a wee bit) in my arms. My legs are still gooey, but I know I'm getting stronger. I hope when I weigh in at the end of June I'll see some kind of small loss, but I'm REALLY hoping for some inches lost. :)
Thanks for keeping me accountable, ladies. Even if I'm not weighing in regularly, I still feel like I'm being accountable to someone. :)

I've that I retain water for 2 days after a significant workout or ride - and it takes 2 full rest days for my body to give that up. Have others noted this? It is frustrating, and it also makes it easy to become complacent (ohhhh, that 2 pounds is just water) about it all. Most of the time it is indeed true - but I hate to have to take 2 complete rest days to prove it.
I am wondering if perhaps I am getting too much salt or something that encourages my body to hold onto fluid for so long - but if this is a normal process then I won't worry about it.

I notice the "water weight" gain only after very very long/hard/hilly rides. Sometimes in the heat. I also get it after eating salty, Asian food, which is the reason I no longer eat Japanese, Chinese, or Indian food more than 2-3 times a year now.
Finally back to 104 this morning. Not sure what was going on with my body, but the damage from my trip wasn't bad. I did do a lot of walking around, in addition to the hiking.

Interesting! When we first got here, my feet used to swell a lot, but that stopped happening over time, so I am assuming my body adjusted. I haven't been back to the US since last August, so there's no way to know if I'm still retaining any extra water. I'm visiting my mother in June, but her scale is certainly not calibrated to mine, so who knows if I'll be able to tell anything.
However, since giving up the fruit smoothies, I am now down to 104 in just a few days, the lowest I've been since fall, so I am a cappy hamper. :D I weighed 103 when we arrived in Belize last August, so I doubt I'm retaining much water since my clothes all fit the same. When I was up to 108-109, I could definitely feel them getting tighter.

Now, I'm the one who's curious! How do you prepare your fruit smoothies?
You mentioned a few posts back that you think you eat way more fresh fruit than you should. Is most of the fruit you consume in smoothie form? That might be the problem -- smoothies might add in extra calories. Plus if you eat fruit in its native form you'll likely eat it slower, and it might be more filling. Just a thought.

I'm in for this round, with a goal of 125 again. Sorry for the late reply- was out of town last week.
DH and I just got back from a working vacation, serving as bike mechanics for a charity bike tour. Despite being on my feet for 10-12 hours a day, I think I actually gained, thanks to the awesome meals that they fed us. I'll make this coming Friday my first official weigh-in.

Hi Emily, congrats about the weight loss! Interesting about the smoothies. So maybe the problem is the smoothies and not the fruit per se! Another suggestion I was going to make is to time better your fruit consumption with your exercise. If the problem is that eating so much fruit increases your blood sugar, then perhaps the problem is that the elevated blood sugar is causing you to have elevated levels of insulin, which is a fat promoting hormone. But by consuming fruit before or during exercise, you should burn it up and not store it as fat. Likewise, try to not consume fat with the fruit, as that will also end up stored as body fat when insulin goes up. Maybe that is what was going on with the smoothies.
emily_in_nc
05-15-2012, 01:14 PM
The smoothies had no fat but consisted of mango, papaya, pineapple, banana, and chia seeds, with just enough orange juice (yes, more sugar) to allow them to mix well with ice in the blender. We were having them every day at 4 pm, prior to walking our dog -- not very intense exercise. It was essentially like another "meal" that I really don't need, given my activity level in the heat here (not nearly as high as during cooler weather).
I am still eating whole fruit (usually a small banana - much smaller than the ones you get in the US, a scoop of cut papapa, and a scoop of cut mango) on my morning oatmeal, so I am meeting my fruit quota, but cutting out the smoothies has really helped. Even DH has lost 3 lbs! Also, we always go on our daily bike ride to town on errands right after breakfast, so that oatmeal and fruit gets burned off, where our smoothies were too close to dinner so probably went straight to fat storage.
I'm putting the chia seeds in my oatmeal now since they are so good for me, but just eating a "normal" amount of fruit now, I think. Seems to be working!

hmmm, I'm losing, too...and I have a smoothie every day. Berries, peaches, bananas, yogurt (whole milk yogurt if I can find it, 2% if I can't--fat free yogurt doesn't do much for me), soy milk (not orange juice), vanilla, a touch of honey.
I'm not having mine in addition to my regular meals, though. I have a smoothie for breakfast, usually, so it is one of my meals. Maybe that's the difference.
I'm currently at 136. I don't look at TE every week, so I'll probably be sporadic in logging my weight here. I'm keeping track, though. I would like to be down to 130 by the end of June.

I revisited my sports nutritionist (via email) yesterday regarding calorie targets on long ride days now that my rides are getting longer. Net calories have once again entered the picture - but only on long-ride days. I am keeping the same targets for all other days, and any calories I consume right before, during, or in the first hour after a long ride won't count. It will be like they don't exist.
So back to a minimum net calorie target of 1,300 on long ride days, which is what I've used in the past and can be quite challenging to hit. That might be a little easier now that I've had to change my diet in order to meet the higher caloric intake I need.

Went up again, another 2 pounds to 219. After biking regularly for three weeks and increasing miles every week, I can only assume it's muscle weight. I can feel new muscles all over and I have been watching my diet (although it could improve). I will be happy when I start burning fat.
Provided that you are not eating too much, the weight gain likely is mostly water, which is not uncommon when increasing exercise, as part of the muscle healing process and to facilitate storage of glycogen. It is hard to gain more than about a 1/2 a pound a month in muscle for women.

I was 226 on Saturday. Doing great on eating. Need to work on ramping up the exercise (was very sore from moving).
Feeling so great! I am down from 148.7 to 143.5, just 10 lbs away from my goal.
I have cut out flour, sugar and alcohol and am weighing my food to ensure portion control. I am also not eating snacks unless I need them (after a long ride, for example). Snacks have been a trigger for me because I am a major grazer.
I am now past the point of craving foods that are bad for me. For example, I used to never be able to resist eating many slices of pizza when I served it to my picky eater son. The other day we had pizza in the house and it didn't even call to me!! That being said, I am not keeping sweet treats in the house because I don't want to dig into them in a vulnerable moment.
Besides fitting into my (non-stretchy) clothes again, mostly I am excited about seeing how my cycling (especially hill climbing) improves when I am 10 lbs lighter.

This Friday came fast...
103.8
I'm noticing some different patterns with my weight/eating, now that cycling season is in high gear for me. For the last 2 weekends, my weight has been more stable. I haven't gained 3-4 pounds over the weekends, just 1-2. I also have been taking one full rest day a week and that seems to not only help my recovery, but it stabilizes my weight. I've added more carbs back in to my diet, but I seem to know what my limit is. But, I think the thing that's helped the most is the fact that I've been going to the boot camp/circuit training classes twice a week, religiously.

135. No change.
I've become quite comfortable with my no-sugar, no-grain, lots of veggies-fruits-protein way of eating, although it was very hard to change at first. I now look forward to ramping up my exercise. I did one 43-mile ride this week and one 20-miler, and I felt strong on both. I want to increase my riding to four days a week and re-focus on Pilates, which I have let fall by the wayside. That ought to kickstart losing the next five pounds.

132, which is up after a week of pretty consistent 126-128s. Thursdays tend to be hard workout days for me, and I'm now thinking that a Friday morning weigh-in is just poor timing for me. I'm going to weigh again tomorrow, when stuff hurts less, and see what happens.
I've definitely lost weight. I now have a bunch of bottoms that are too big in the waist and hips :)

I've been in and out, not especially motivated, dealing with health and personal issues, and off the bike since last November or so. I'm hoping to rectify that last part soon, and to get my treadmill rebuilt so I can use it.
I am proud of this: for four mornings straight I've risen before dawn and taken my dog - also way overweight - for a 30-minute walk around our neighborhood.

Next stop 140's. It might take another 6 months, but I'm not worried. Maybe if I lose it as slowly as I have, it will FINALLY stay off this time. I've been there done that with the fast (1-2lbs a week) weight loss and it has always come back on. Maybe 1-2 lbs a month will help me keep it off for good. I'll get there eventually.

144.0 -- a new low for a WW weigh-in. Woot!
My husband left this morning to stay with his dad in HI for a couple of weeks, so it'll be interesting to see how well I maintain my weight while he's away. I'm generally not what you'd call a nutritional role model when left to my own devices. :p  :D
Well. LeeBob is still in HI, and we're arranging to move his dad closer to us in the Bay Area. His dad was in a pretty bad car accident in early May (which is why Lee has been out there) but fortunately dad's recovered enough to make the move. With all the necessary arrangements and ancillary bs it's been a godawful stressful month, to say the least. Lee is returning with his dad a week from Monday, at which point our lives will resume, sort of.
Ah, but there's a sliver of a silver lining -- I've had no problem whatsoever keeping the weight off! (I tend not to eat much when I'm very stressed).
So my official WW weight is now 143.8, another new low.
Um, yay? :p :D

142.0. Steady is better than gaining, I guess, though not what I had in mind.
For the first time in more than 20 years, I have stopped taking Depakote every day to control migraines. I've been on a low dose for several years and stopped it altogether on June 1 to see if I still need it at all. On higher doses, it had a big affect on my appetite, so I'm curious to see if dropping from only 250 mg per day to 0 will do anything. Of course, a week from now I might decide I need to go back on it, depending on how my head behaves.

Yeah, I think the long weekend rides are causing problems with me. Generally I find that I'm hungrier than usual for several days after a long ride, so for the past month or so I've tried to eat more for the dinner and breakfast afterwards, and I guess I've gone overboard.
I would like to say that I've gained a bit of muscle over the past couple of months, and maybe that's true since I probably lose a bit over the winter and build it back up when I start riding again in the spring. But that would probably account for less than a pound at most.

142.6.
The last thing on my mind this week has been fat. I gained at least 3 lbs of water while I was sitting at my desk last Friday afternoon. Realized I hadn't gotten up for a long time, stood up, legs felt like stuffed sausages. It was the worst on Monday-Tuesday, and it stayed until Wednesday. For several days it was so bad my sandals were digging into my feet.
I don't know why it was so bad. I was actually wondering if having the Depakote out of my system was having a bizarre effect on me. A hormone swing might explain some of it, but not the severity or duration. There was nothing unusually salty about the food I was eating, and once it started I made an effort to avoid salty foods.
And I don't know what to do about it. I kept my feet elevated but that didn't seem to help. I don't want to take diuretics but I have no idea what else to do.
Anyway. I'm leaving on Sunday to visit my parents for a week, and their low-carb diet usually leaves me hungry and losing weight, or not gaining at the very least. So we'll see how things go.

Woke up this morning, ate and then proceeded to not only spend extra time in the bathroom, but started a queasy feeling that happens about once every 5 years... diarrhea, following by throwing up. Thankfully, the second one didn't happen, because last time it did, I was still teaching and I had to run out of my class and I spent about 30 minutes laying on the woman's room floor, thinking I was going to die there! I left early for my client, went to to the drug store and bought Pepto, as I had none in the house. I felt horrible all morning, better now, but not great.

Stuck back at 134ish again...but I have been falling back into old habits (not eating quite enough) but that will change next week. I am not starving myself, just so much going on that it is hard to eat properly and the budget is extremely tight this week. All of this will improve in another week :)
Amazing how my weight always springs up just a bit when my calories start dropping even a little and they don't have to drop very far from my target for this to happen. I still think some of this is fluid retention from hard efforts and I've learned the only way to take care of it is to take two full rest days from all exercise and my weight drops at least 2 pounds. I don't normally take off two real rest days in a row...

For me it does make a significant difference, around 2-3 pounds or so. I don't think it really matters which number we choose as long as we are consistent. I tend to weigh in either Thursday or Saturday morning rather than Friday morning because of this, Wed is normally a rest day and I've a hard workout on Thursday evenings. To get my lowest weight, I actually need to take 2 full rest days in a row but this doesn't happen often.

This is exactly what I was talking about. I think the rest has become more important for me as I age.
I know what kinds of exercise causes retention and what causes me to actually temporarily lose. For example, last Saturday I rode 42 miles, with the 15 middle miles part of a ride DH and I were leading. That was stressful, to say the least, and although I rode slower than usual to the ride and during the ride, we booked it home in order to get back to the event for dinner. I ate with no regard to calories at the dinner, and woke up the next morning at my lowest weight since, well, the early '90s. I think as long as I am restricting carbs when not riding, and eating more vegetarian than not, my weight is more stable.

Well, DH is finally home after a full month away (yay!!!) but now we're smack-dab in Elder Care Hell trying to get the FIL settled in an assisted care facility about a 5-minute drive away from us, and dealing with the mounds of associated BS. We're stressed out to the gills, and when I'm not stressed or anxious or exhausted, I'm becoming very depressed.
I was looking at facebook last night and saw tons of posts by people participating in the SFR 1000K brevet, which, before our journey into Elder Care Hell, DH and I were planning to help maillotpois on (we had to bail out on that, along with every other freakin' thing we planned to do this summer and early fall) ... and I started crying. That one really got to me. Note to self: step away from the facebook for the time being.
DH and I had a good mutual cry (oh yeah, it's all getting to him too), we dried our eyes, and started talking about stuff. It was good. Then FIL called needing something, and we smiled and dealt with it. His timing was impeccable, if he called 15 minutes earlier it could have been ugly. :p
After we dealt with FIL, DH and I stopped by the grocery store to pick up a few things. And I suggested it was high time for some Ben & Jerry's therapy -- heh, DH lit up light a beacon on that one. :D So last night I downed nearly an entire pint of New York Super Fudge chunk, my drug of choice. First time I've done that in ages.
I know I must not use food as therapy, but dammit I needed that last night. At least I'm well below my WW goal weight, so I can get away with a couple of indiscretions. I just better not make a habit of it. Hopefully the FIL will settle into his new digs and the crises will settle down to a dull roar and the stupidity will eventually be dealt with. And I can find the time and the inclination to dust the cobwebs off my sadly ignored bike and go out for some short rides. Here's hoping.
Thanks for listening, gang.

No goal for me this time around, and if it stays hot/sticky/gross I'm not sure it'll drop much the rest of the summer since I melt when I go outside. Will have to reassess this weekend and see how I feel about the next go-round...

Went to WW for a weigh-in, I was at 144, up a whopping 0.2 from when I last checked earlier this month.
For me, stress & anxiety are very effective for keeping the weight off. Can't say I recommend this approach, though. :D

Update: I weighed 139.8 on June 30. I figured it was an anomaly, but I've been between 138.8 and 139.9 since then, so I guess it's real. So my final weight for June is 139.8.
I'm not sure how it happened, but I guess I ate less on vacation than I thought I did, despite the pizza, cookies, carrot cake and Carvel ice cream with chocolate crunchies.

That's great and amazing ny biker! Wish I could eat like that and lose. Or even maintain.
That said, I'm hanging in at 105.5 (lower than when I was actually doing this challenge!), which is a decent weight for me. It's still 2 lbs. higher than when we moved to Belize, but I will take it, as I've been as high as 109 here.
