The accident I had has me questioning so many different things. I was the only one hurt in the accident. But had I injured someone else . . . then what? Is there any type of liability available to bicyclists? I've looked on the internet but haven't been able to find anything I understand.

I have home owner's, auto, and an umbrella policy from my insurer. Would this be enough?

People are liable for their own negligence as well as for their intentional acts that cause harm to people or their property. If you have a bike accident that is your fault and you injure someone else odds are you will have coverage under your homeowners (or renters) insurance. The personal liability protection of your policy should provide you with liability protection for your unintentional acts. Of course, you need to check your policy to be sure.

I had a friend whose father was in the nursing home with dementia. His dad had a tendency to ride his wheelchair recklessly and over-react when touched, taking swings at people. My friend worked with an insurance agent and got his dad "renters" insurance to cover accidental injuries caused by his dad. Yes, it turns out you can get renters insurance when in a nursing home.

The two main cycling organisations in the UK, the CTC (Cyclists Touring Club) and London Cycling Campaign provide third party insurance as part of their membership benefits package. Perhaps there is an equivalent organisation in the USA?
