I am trying out a saddle (Specialized Jett) which has the 30 day return deal as long as it is in like new condition. I tried a Ruby a year ago, but the rails got scratched during the process, and I ended up having to sell it myself. Can I tape them? What kind of tape? I mentioned that to the LBS guy, and he said he had never heard of anyone doing that, but it made sense.

Tape would likely leave sticky residue. How about paper under the tape?
Plastic wrap, as in Saran wrap?
I'd try electrical tape. Shouldn't leave much residue and protects fairly well. I use it to wrap around my stays so that my clip on fenders don't scratch finish.

Just use orange degreaser to remove any sticky residue.

When I was experimenting with various Specialized and Bontrager saddles, my LBS specifically said to use electrical tape on the rails to prevent scratches so there would be no issues with returns.
