Buffing nails

Innocent me was accosted by a savvy saleswoman at the airport. She nearly sold me a nail buffer brush all in 1 set.

Though tempted, my hands still need care and as a cyclist I'm I care less and less about manicured hands...vs. avoiding future age spots on my hands from too much sun.

I enjoy my $3 nail buffer set from the drug store.

It allows me to have clean-looking hands without the need to be dexterous with nail polish. The buffer also allows me to avoid the chemicals in polish. Buffed nails lose their gloss gently and unobtrusively. Unlike polish which sometimes chips or peels or discolors, and often grows out with a definite demarkation.

Keeping my hands tidy is a sign of my respect for those who have to work with me and see my hands every day. Much like showering every day and making sure I don't smell bad.

Cycling doesn't seem to affect my hands. I always wear nail polish. Occasionally it chips from some bike related thing, but I just fix it later. I don't buff my nails much, except if I am getting a professional manicure. But mostly, I just do it myself.

My hands are a mess. Between working at the bike shop, DIY living room & porch renovation and making my jewelry, my poor hands don't stand a chance. And, I haven't even started working in my garden yet!
Rough hands are not an issue when I am working on any of the above, but I do feel kind of self-conscious when I am at a clients house advising her on window treatments. I'm dressed nice, with make-up, jewelry & all, then my hands with short nails, cuts & scrapes. (although I do manage to get all the grease off)
I use gloves when ever I can, but there are somethings that just can't be done with gloves. So, I lather on the hand cream at the end of the day and am happy with all that I got accomplished with those hands.

I don't wear any rings on my fingers and so briefly did think about buffing. But now, examining the free buff job, it looks less shiny. :rolleyes:

Any artwork stuff involving paints, goo does require extra care. I'm not sure about others here, but when I did oil and some acrylic painting, I used a neutral silicone hand creme lightly on my hands to keep the paints from discolouring my skin. I've had jobs where I would help people one-to-one with learning certain software. they would be looking at my hands and screen nearby.

My hands usually sport a little paint, a few new bruises or scratches from moving furniture, and in gardening season, a healthy dose of crud under the nail and on the right index finger from pulling weeds. I did a lot better at remembering to wear gloves last year though.
I keep my nails short... I don't buff. I'm just kind of low maintenance I guess. I also have really short hair - can't deal with long hair either! I try to dress nice instead, even though I usually live in jeans, I have quite the shoe collection. Jeans + heels or nice flats make jeans less...casual. I have my cake and eat it too! LOL

I can't be bothered either. Nice clothes, jewelry, a little bit of putty in my hair, that's as good as it gets. :rolleyes:

I like the way my nails look when they're buffed. I'll do them maybe once a year. :p Really if I were going to give something more attention, it ought to be my cuticles, which are just terrible.

When I first cut my long hair I had it chin length and it was a HUGE hassle. I had to spend 25 minutes on it every single day, no days off for weekends or holidays because it looked just awful if I left it to its own devices. I had it cut short in '92 or '93 and never looked back. I'm just lazy. Shaving my head would be more work. :o

I occasionally use a buffer -- it's quick and looks nice.

I don't see what nail care has to do with cycling, though (except for getting chain grease all over my hands).
