I have super wide thighs and am self conscious of wearing small spandex/lycra in public that ends right at my crotch. Can anyone reconmend capri style shorts/pants with padding? I cant find any. Certainly longer shorts exist?

Groovy. Thanks so much!
I have Sugoi Lucky Knicker that flares out just a tiny bit below the knee - really flattering! I'm really tempted by Pearl Izumi Superstar knicker too.

Terry also makes several styles of knickers, lycra and more casual styles.

Ah! So it is Knickers I need to search for! I am still learning the vocab. Thanks so much!

I really like Terry Bellas. I have a curvy figure with well padded rear-end and thighs...not particularly overweight but no one would call me lean. I buy one size larger in the shorts and would consider buying 2 sizes larger in the capris/knickers as they seem to be cut pretty small through the lower thigh and knee. I don't know about the sizing of Terry's other models of shorts and knickers.
The other thing you can do is to put a padded liner under some normal capris - this might not be comfortable for longer rides but it's fine for errands and shorter rides (for me anyway). Terry, Sheila Moon, Gore all do nice ones, and I think there are plenty on TE.

The world isn't ready for me in Spandex either...so I wear a pair of stretch chinos over bike shorts. (I roll the cuff on the chain side.) This has worked out well for me.
Just another option...
