Hi Ladies,
My name is Mariela (Maye) and I'm new to this forum and also very glad that I found it!!
I'm returning to cycling after been out for 2 years (new mom) and wanted to start by participating at the NY 2012 Medio Fondo (65 miles) and would like to know if anyone here will be participating in this event at either the competitive or like me, the "leisure" level.
I currently live in Long Island NY.
Cheers,
Mariela

Hi Mariela.

I'm doing the Medio Fondo also. My DH did the Gran Fondo last year and had a blast. He's doing it again this year.

I can't wait to ride across the GWB - ON THE ROAD!!!

Thanks for replying with the website information, CCNYC!!! I will be participating with my husband and with 2 of my brother in laws. The only girl in the group so far :-). I'm in the process of educating myself to buy a road bike since I have a Giant mountain bike which I'm not planning to use for the event. VERY overwhelmed with all the options out there. I'm glad to find that more people here is interested in this event!!
By the way, I was trying to answer ny_biker question but I was receiving a message that my posts has to be approved by a moderator. The funny part is that I think that the problem was related to using Safari on a Mac instead of Internet Explorer on a PC. Once I switched computers my posts are showing up and not receiving the moderators approval message. Goooood!!

Actually, your posts were moderated because they contained links. We moderate posts containing links by all new users until they have a minimum # of posts. Its an attempt to reduce the amount of spam on the forums. Seems to work.

Thanks Susan for clarifying this. I was wondering why they were moderated and it makes perfect sense. I thought that it was Safari related. Not a spammer here :-)

This ride looks very cool. I don't think I'll be able to do it this year, though I won't rule it out completely yet. If not this year, then I'll try to plan for it next year.

Thanks for posting the link Maye. A group of our cyclists from Mineola Bike (not sure if you are familiar with the store) did the Grand Fondo last year. I didn't know they had a lesser route. I wouldn't mind giving it a try but I don't think my good friend would be able to swing the fee this year, maybe another year.

I gather the Medio Fondo goes no where near Bear Mtn. Do you know around where that route goes?

Thanks ~ JoAnn

There's a map on their website. It heads up north but turns around earlier than the 100 mile route.

Hi JoAnn,
Definitively didn't know about the Mineola Bike store and thanks for letting me know since I work in Mineola and live in Glen Cove. I have been living here since 2009 and I'm fairly new to the area. I would not dare to do the Gran Fondo with my experience and to be honest I'm a little bit nervous about the Medio Fondo :( but I'll get ready for it!!
As NY_Biker mentioned, they have the tentative route posted in their website. I'll post the link here in a few minutes.

Last year the Medio Fondo only went as far as Haverstraw.

Thank you!!! I will check it out and will look forward to hearing a report about the Medio Fondo ride. It will be a thought for a ride to do next year hopefully.

Good to know there's also a GF in NJ. I'm going to check that one as well.

Thanks for posting the link. I think I'll do it. It's nice that they have 4 different kind of events (Breve, Piccolo, Medio and Gran Fondo) and that's cool.

I just moved to NJ and live near the southern-most part of the course. Let me know if you want to ride as it gets closer and good luck at the Gran Fondo NY!

DH and I have signed up for the Gran Fondo and are very excited. I wanted to do it last year but I had my knee scoped and wasn't able to recover in time, so I feel like I've been waiting to do this for a long time! :)

Ladies,
I'm so sorry to say that I can't do the Medio Fondo since the information project that I was working in NY was cancelled last Thursday after 3 years of hard work. That's what happens in government unfortunately. OMG this was so sudden that I'm still digesting the facts that I have to call movers, box everything (bike included of course) and head down to Orlando FL, which is where my house is. I was living here in a corporate apartment. Now, I'll have to find events there and who knows if they have a GF in Orlando. Good luck for the ones participating in this great event.

I will still visit this thread to see who else will participate.

This is a totally different Grande Fondo and it's becoming very popular. Ride along the Sea to Sky Highway (about 100 km or abit more) from VAncouver and Whistler. It is one of the most scenic routes in Canada on the road, since there are mountains and ocean strait/sound at every turn.

It's become an annual ride.
