I bought my Giro on closeout during the early summer. Not knowing sizing and getting a good deal, I didn't worry about fit. Really it's too big but wondered what you all were wearing and how to work out sizes. TE had some great helmets but don't know if there are size differences between brands or even within a brand as I can't just try them on. My LBS had the cheapie ones that are really heavy.

I still feel like a fool with a helmet on. They look ridiculous on my head. I'd still rather look ridiculous than have a cracked open head, but still...

I really wish my head shape could take a round shape helmet --I like some of the Nutcase helmets.

Bethany also asked about sizing. Sometimes it takes some digging to figure out what exactly what size is a "small" or "large" or whatever. Here is Giro's size chart:

I have to use a Giro small, and a universal fit in a Giro is too big for me. I actually measured my head in centimeters when buying a Tilly hat and knew my head size.

I also have a Bern helmet, the Berkeley. I love this helmet for comfort and I think it looks cool.

However, it is not the best for hot weather but is ideal for cool weather cycling and tooling around town. In the Berkeley I wear an xs. Here is their size chart:

I suggest first measuring your head to see what helmet size will fit. Then, try on helmets that are available to you to try to get an idea of the helmet shape that works for you, whether rounder or more oblong. I have noticed that different price points of the same brand sometimes have different fit quality. I have a Giro Aeon (I wanted the hi viz). This is a pricey helmet. It fits me like a glove, better than my old bottom of the line Giro ever fit.

Have you tried Bern? I don't really have my arms around round or oblong but the Bern fits me well and the Nutcase just didn't feel right.

I need a Giro. My Bell is too oblong and squishes the sides of my head. I get killer headaches after a ride. The usual rule on helmet replacement is 3-5 years, right?

I have a Laser that I love. I also like Rudy Project and Specialized along with Louis Garneau. Not a fan of girl/bell.

I replace once a year normally (either due to crashing or smell)

X2 on the Laser. I wear the Laser 02, and it's the most comfy helmet I've tried. I used to wear a Giro Atmos, but that thing never did fit me properly and would give me excruciating headaches during rides.

I feel like the only way to know if a helmet fits me is to try it on. I've been happy with Giro Pneumos for years, but when I tried an Atmos in the same size it didn't feel like it fit right.

Any idea on a helmet that is deep rather than wide? I have a huge forehead and helmets finish in the middle of it. I know that it's not protecting my face properly (last accident my sun glasses took the force thank goodness). They end up leaving red marks. I wear a medium size (large is too big widthways)and still doesn't solve the depth issue.

I have tried Specialised, Giro, Limar, and Bell. So are any helmets deep?

Bern doesn't fit my head either. I've tried several different ones already. :(

So many of the oblong helmets (I have a Giro.) just are wonderfully flashy. And for women, some manufacturers do some light pastely floral design.

But well, it would be nice to get something quite innovative, non-sporty that suits oblong shaped helmet. But maybe all the air vents already cuts down on the helmet "canvas" for design inspirations.
