MTB ride with a hamfisted ending

Yesterday I rode another one of my old favorites, the Salmon Falls Trail in El Dorado County, CA. This was only my second real mtb ride in 15 years. The first one was in Auburn last weekend (http://forums.teamestrogen.com/showthread.php?t=46505).

This trail seemed more difficult than the ones I did in Auburn, due to how technical it is. I intended to climb the 2 mile long Flagstaff Hill, but I overshot the trail leading to it.

On the way out I saw people walking and resting on a climb, so I knew this would be a good climb on the way back. Sure enough, it made me live up to my username! :D I made it all the way up without walking or resting. I did pick a wrong line and stall out once, but I restarted and continued on.

I saw another cyclist with a GoPro on his helmet. He was riding with a friend. They noticed my chest-mounted GoPro and that sparked a good conversation. One of the guys was riding a hybrid with 700x35c tires! :eek:

On the way back I saw a lot of dog walkers and petted a few dogs. Then the hamfist of the day occurred when I attempted to descend the most ridiculously technical section of trail I've ever encountered. It was a slow-speed crash too. Yes, it was caught on video! :D

Sign I should have heeded, at least on the descent. I had no problem cleaning this climb, but the descent was another story!

You and me both! :eek: I would have done everything in my power to make sure my weight shifted to the left if I felt like I was falling the wrong way.

Lesson learned. The guy near the end of the video who cleaned that section shows us how it's done! :) I need to study his technique, or walk that section. I honestly can't remember if I used to ride that or walk it in the old days.

People have died on that "caution section". I've personally seen people go over the edge - and their bikes go farther.

It's a great trail and 99% is pretty tame, but that first stretch should not be underestimated.

There're also big kitties sitting in the perfectly placed trees above the trail cuts. Not a place to ride alone.

Otherwise, it's a gorgeous trail. :rolleyes: :D Spent a lot of time on it.

I've never heard of a mountain lion attack on Salmon Falls. A woman runner was killed by one near Cool back in 1994 though.

I've never heard of the deaths on that gnarly section either. Not saying they didn't happen, but I posted this same ride report on other forums and nobody mentioned deaths or mountain lions.

I can't live my life worrying about what may happen. I don't ride recklessly and I was careful to avoid getting too close to the edge. The video makes things look scarier than they reallly are.

I don't have a choice but to ride alone. None of my friends are into mountain biking. I'd rather take my chances by riding alone and be happy and healthy than be forced to limit my riding to paved roads, which IMHO are more dangerous than mountain bike trails due to moronic drivers who are speeding and/or distracted or don't care about my safety and wish they could run me down.

Don't get me wrong. I still love road cycling and will continue to do it, but there are certain roads I will no longer ride on unless it's very early in the morning when the dopes are still sleeping. Salmon Falls Road is one of them, thanks to motorist stupidity.

I didn't say "don't ride." I'm just recommending caution which the experts would say is don't ride alone in known mt lion territory.

I can't even look at some of those drop offs. I quit mountain biking because of this. Mountain biking here is more in the woods and single track technical, rooty, rocky stuff. I decided that while I love being in the woods, when I am on the trails, it's going to be hiking...

Mountain lions can watch you all day long and that doesn't mean they're going to attack you.

Plenty of people ride solo. Like I said, I have no choice but to ride solo. Either I ride alone or I take another kind of risk riding on the road. No type of cycling is 100% safe.

If there was an attack on that trail, I would like to know. Otherwise I'm not going to worry about it. I'll be aware of my surroundings like I always am, but I'm not going to live in fear.

I quit watching TV because of all the depressing, fear-mongering news. I have been reading about these trails online, and so far I haven't read anything about a mountain lion attack at Salmon Falls or the Clementine Loop in Auburn.

too bad the star trek "beam me up scottie" technology isn't perfected yet! I ride alone all the time and would be happy for company and would love to try rocky, sunny trails (the ones I ride most frequently are dark and rooty)

agreed! I am in no mans land because I just want to ride.......to ride! I may race someday,.when my kids are older...my sons are sweet to ride with me sometimes, but I hold them back so usually we separate. Though we have one awesome loop with go arounds that we can do together and I skip the insane jumps...........

Luv2climb - I don't know what got your dander up, but basically you clearly implied that because no one on other forums posted the info I gave you that my statements were not credible. Yet, here I am married to someone who would have the FACTS about deaths and mountain lion POPULATIONS plus attacks in CA state recreation areas, not just relating forum hearsay. You want me to get him on the phone for you? Would that be more credible?

I can't believe I'm being berated for sharing that I have personally seen a lion on that specific trail who was in perfect position to leap.

We all weigh out the risks and benefits of any sport. Even though there may have been no attacks there, doesn't mean the potential doesn't exist. I just wanted you to be aware of some FACTS that you may not have known. Feel free to go about your business, as I will mine.

Are you reading my posts clearly? I'm not berating you or calling you a liar. I'm just saying I never read about mountain lion attacks or deaths at Salmon Falls anywhere else. I am a member of MTBR, which is one of the biggest mountain biking forums out there, if not the biggest. I posted the same ride report there, on BikeForums, Social Cyclists, and in the off-topic section of Road Bike Review. Nobody ever told me the same stuff you did. That doesn't mean you're lying. It just means nobody told me the same thing. That's all.
