One of my undergrad research assistants is entering a master's program in exercise physiology. He's uncertain about what he wants to do with his degree. He's getting the degree because he likes research, he's not interested in a PhD, and he selected the program he's applying to because his girlfriend lives there.

Not the best reasons but not the worst. And at least he's not getting a PhD.

I want to get him a graduation present. I'd like to give him some career advice. I looked for Peter Fiske's books but I guess they are out of print. I browsed on amazon for a while but so many of the books are >10 yrs old and I know personally how much the field has changed. Some of the books are narrow focused, only for PhDs wanting to be professors (why so many books for them? 90000 postdocs, 24000 tenure track jobs...most of those are already filled...this is not a viable career option yet all this info on how to do it!)

I really want to find something specific to science careers. I've failed to get him interested in something more general like "What Color Is Your Parachute".

So, does anyone have suggestions of a book or two that would be helpful to him?
