The Tablet?

I would have been except I won a Kindle last week at my company's holiday luncheon. Since I live in a sales taxless state, I trotted it right back to Best Buy and use the $199 for the Kindle + AZ state taxes + 2 gift cards I'd forgotten about and got an Asus Eee Pad Transformer for less than the cost of a Nook Tablet. Woohoo!

However, I have played with the Nook Tablet and was very impressed with it for the cost. And, as I've said before, I sure like the Nook so I can buy from my local book stores. I love walking in a store where I'm greeted as a friend and the employees actually READ the books. The NT is getting some nice reviews.

I own both a Nook and a Kindle (because they both use different formats). I use and enjoy them both. The biggest advantage the Kindle has is the free 3g. I was very annoyed when I first got the nook because - to register it - I ended up walking down my neighborhood looking for someone who had an unsecured network. If you don't have wi-fi, you just can't register it very easily.

For both the nook and kindle, you can download a book to your computer and transfer it to your device. For Kindle, I have the free 3g, so when I buy a book it downloads to it directly.

I love reading on e-ink so much that I've grown to resent paper books. I won't buy them anymore. (Well, there are some exceptions - especially for books with illustrations). I was not an early adopter - I though people were nuts to prefer their kindles to real paper. But at my age? It's so much easier to read from the nook and kindle that it's not even funny!

Nook color tablet:
I received it as a gift when I asked for the b/w one.
Here's my thoughts. It's worthless as is, for a tablet. The app selection available through BN is worthless. There is one free app that I could find, and anything I wanted, while free on other platforms costs a couple of bucks from BN. Really? It is not a recognized android device, so you can't load regular android apps onto it. No Facebook app, no Huffington Post, no New York Times. You can log into the websites to read things, but a regular web page crammed into a 7" display is hard to read.

Now, this "legal" jailbreak thing intrigues me, but heck if now I'm going to have spent $300+ on it (the whole thing, not the rooting disc), why not just get a real tablet? Plus, all the evidence points to the b/w e ink being a much nicer reading experience.

FWIW, I've read several books on my iPad now, and I find it quite readable. That was a big surprise to me, since like most people I can't read a laptop screen for that long. It's actually much more readable than my old Sony Reader, which has very low non-adjustable contrast. Now I got a Kindle for Christmas. :rolleyes: I like gadgets, but there are limits...

I got both a Nook and a Kindle Fire for Christmas. The Nook was just a reader, and it took about 5 minutes for me to know I didn't love it. I actually decided to return it before I even knew I was a getting the Kindle, so I was really surprised by how much I love the Kindle, thinking they were the same thing. Now I know it's like apples and oranges, since the Kindle is a tablet.

I'm really enjoying it. Unfortunately, I spent a good deal of the holiday engrossed in its screen, ignoring my company, transformed back to my 1980 Rubik's Cube obsessed self. It's very user friendly and there are lots of free things on it, apps, books, movies, and tv shows. I like the screen for reading. It's been years since I could read without ill effects, like headaches and a sore neck. This has been great for comfort. It also came with a free month of Amazon Prime, which I'll buy for sure.

I traded the Nook Tablet for the Simple Touch and for I'm loving it.I just couldn't get over the crappiness of the app selection for it. Except, the Simple Touch has no reverse text function ( white text on black) for night reading. I think I'll keep it - so I am wondering if anyone has a clip on night light they can recommend.

Figuring out what I want has been borderline making my head explode. The conclusion I've come to is to have the Simple Touch as it's very lightweight and small. A night light seems like the best fix. Otherwise it's would upgrading to the color nook which does do the reverse text, but also like the nook tablet seems like a real compromise device. Or go all the way up to a tablet. I think I'll be looking into a tablet for next time we travel, but for bed reading and toting around just for reading seems like a little much.

I will probably swing by BN to inspect the color Nook anyway, but it weighs twice as much as the ST so I think I'll keep what I (now) have. Has anyone done this comparison: Simple Touch vs Color Nook... weight and feel for primarily reading

I have. I think you made the right decision. I can't imagine holding the weight of the Tablet while reading nor would I like the backlit screen for reading.

I find the eInk screen the nicest for the purpose and the little Nook clip on light sufficient for the purpose. Outdoors the eInk screen is far better.

One of the things I also like about the Touch is the battery life which means when I'm camping I don't have to worry about recharging.

I considered buying the Tablet in addition to the Touch but after playing with it a bit I decided to wait until I could buy a real tablet, which the Nook Tablet is not by any stretch of the imagination. A couple of huge cons for me are the B&N business model and the storage issues. Recently, B&N changed, as in took away, the ability to sideload apps so now the device is tethered to B&N much the same way as the Amazon Kindle. I understand why since they make their profit from sales of content rather than the device. You can still sideload content BUT the internal storage is partitioned so that only a small amount is available for non-B&N content. You have to buy an SD card to increase storage capacity for non-B&N content.

For the above reasons, I recently bought an Asus Transformer with the docking station. I couldn't be happier since I now have 2 devices that perform well for their intended function instead of having to deal with severe compromises. Oh yeah, the battery capacity on the Transformer is awesome.

I meant to mention that the link above for a "legal jailbreak" was for the Nook Color. The same may be available for a Nook Tablet but with the recent restictions to sideloading I'd do some research before investing.

You can buy a preloaded rooting SD card for the tablet at Newegg for about $50. If they are selling them it can't be illegal.

The clincher for me was the whole BN apps thing.
1. you can't log onto Android without hacking the device
2. "thousands" of apps? My a**s
3. apps that are free via android or apple cost money through BN.
3. apps that you would expect to find, such as New York Times, Facebook, Huff post and so on, don't exist.
4. The scrabble app won't allow you to play yourself. WTF?

I will wait and get a real, full function tablet.

Irulan, I can only find a SD card on newegg for the Nook COLOR, not the Nook TABLET. Everything I've been able to find on the TABLET state the bootloader is locked and signed. I state this from posts posted today on both the B&N community forum and XDA Developers forum.

Yes, the Nook COLOR can be rooted from an SD card from Newegg, but not the TABLET. If you found something else, can you provide the link?

It would have helped if B&N hadn't named it the "Tablet." I think the name is misleading but it's getting them sales.

Yeah, the first link finishes with everyone figuring out how to block the 1.4 update used to close the bootloader hole -- and the struggling with how to get around it. I don't think I want to go to all the effort. The article was from before the update.

And the second link states the product for the Tablet is under development.

I think there is a plethora of pissed off peoples out there. You probably made a wise choice. I know I'm feeling a sense of dodging a bullet. Afterall, the 7" Toshiba Thrive isn't much more than the Nook Tablet plus a SD card for rooting.
