I need to get Christmas gifts for two of my cousins. For the past couple of years I got them liquor (champagne or Bailey's). This year I saw some nice storage jars with snowflakes on them, so I figured I would fill them with candy or cookies or something. They both have spouses and kids and do lots of entertaining, and they could use the jars every year.

I bought the jars today and then went to Trader Joe's to look for interesting treats.

And then I remembered that one cousin's husband was recently either diagnosed with diabetes or was told he's pre-diabetic. At Thanksgiving, he was eating sugar-free cookies that someone got at a bakery.

Does anyone know of some good diabetic candies or other treats that I could get to put in the jar? Preferably something that would appeal to other family members, too? I want to give something inclusive.

I guess I could go with something like pretzels or nuts, but that's not as much fun.

Thanks!!

Diabetic candies taste good...until the sugar alcohols start causing gastric distress. :o Sometimes even the "sugar free" candies can mess with a diabetic's blood sugar, too.

I would think mixed nuts would be your safest option. Pretzels are still very carby.

Spiced nuts?

You know, I'll bet there are recipes for doing cinnamon/sugar roasted almonds with Splenda. That would be good stuff and wouldn't cause blood sugar or gastric issues. This recipe (http://www.food.com/recipe/spiced-nuts-splenda-144948) looks like it might be a winner. DaVinci sugar-free syrups are excellent. I used those a lot when I was a low-carber. They worked in recipes and in coffee.

Great recommendations here. I just wanted to add that 'sugar free' candy is often worse than the regular stuff - it's the carbs that count and SF has a lot of carbs. It's useless to a diabetic, really.
