View Full Version : What is your goal for 2006?

OK gang... so I have committed (and most likely SHOULD be committed!) to riding a century a month in 2006... this means that once a month I'm gonna spend more or less an entire day on the bike... I have no goals regarding speed etc... just to complete the ride...
for 2005 my goal was to ride at least 1 more mile than I had in 2004... LOL.. yeah, I walluped that goal! :D
so what are YOUR goals for this year with riding?

I have plans of doing the Virtual Trans-Canada Highway ride on bikejournal.com.
http://www.transcanadahighway.com/
The Trans-Canada Highway between Victoria (BC) and St. John's (NF) is the world's longest national highway with a length of 7,821 km (4,860 mi.) The midpoint of the highway is at Batchwana Bay, about 65 km north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
I guess that I'd say then that my mileage goal for 2006 is at LEAST 4860 miles as of right now. I figure I've got 2095 (including indoor spinning) miles as of right now and that's been in 5 months of riding. If I can stay healthy and riding all winter or at least spinning my legs off when it's too cold to get outside, I should be able to do it eh??
Edit: Since my Mother is Canadian (Newfoundlander) and many of us are ADOPTING a home Province, I am riding for Team Newfoundland. :D

Besides world peace? ;)
A 200k brevet/permanent/populaire
A 24-hr team mtb race (plus a shorter version as practice)
A 21 mph (or faster :) ) 10 mile TT with my triple crankset century-comfy non-aero Litespeed (means 31 secs faster than my PB)
I will not set a total mileage goal because, for me, it just takes the fun out of riding. It sets up a competition with others who may only be riding pavement when I also mtbike. I like watching the miles build, but you can't compare apples and oranges even when the total time is the same. Effort and mileage don't match up.
I really had fun this year with the total feet climbed, the Bay Area Trifecta and the TTs. I like these more immediate goals plus I get to meet the goals with my friends, on dirt or pavement. The Bay Area Trifecta may become an annual goal, especially since pizza seems to be at the end of the rides. :p

oooh Bikerchick, I love this topic.
I used to think goals would ruin the fun of cycling but it turns out that it was very motivating to have some reasonable goals in 2005.
Most of my goals are based on local rides/landmarks so they won't make sense to most folks..but what the heck...here they are:
1) Acadia National Park visitor center to the top of Cadillac Mountain in 36 minutes or less.
2) Ascent of Cadillac Mountain in under 21 minutes
3) A century ride
4) West Side Ride in under 1 hour and 45 minutes
5) Acadia Triathlon in under 2 hours and 5 minutes
6) Improve on 2005 Time Trial time by 30 seconds or more
7) Enjoy cycling even more than last year :)

LOL - I have a really big mirror in my bathroom and depending on what part of the mirror you look in you can be thinner or fatter. I will just keep whistling to myself and looking in the skinny part.
My goal apart from avoiding the fat part of the mirror is to ride two centuries. :)

5,000 miles +/-
I prefer to set a mileage goal to keep me motivated to commute during the winter months.
So far I've "virtually" ridden across the US and back and am now riding through the southern part of Australia. Like Mary, I'm riding across Canada for 2006 plus I opted to ride at least 6 metric centuries for the year. I tried to do a century a month for part of 2005 but got very de-motivated spending so many hours riding alone so I won't set myself up for that in 2006. I Will ride a century or 5 ;) but won't set a specific goal.
I would also like to give some more thought to starting a ladies only ride so I may work on that some in 2006.

Stable personal finances

FYI Consair and others:
LUNA is expanding their outreach program (road cycling, MTB, tri, and running) into other major cities in the US. The application process for new teams starts in Jan/Feb. Keep your eyes posted on the lunabar.com website and I'll post more info as it comes in. The lunabar website (and the website below) tells you where our current teams are located. So, if you don't see your city there - consider applying! We'll also be expanding our Bay Area Road Cycling team (adding four more team members). I'll be posting that application (more focused than the new team application) to the website below next week :)
It's really great to see you and others taking an interest in promoting women's cycling!

Great thread!
No milage goal for me as I have to have surgery next winter which makes any weekly/monthly estimate irrelevant.
BIG goals (won't know if they're attainable till mid-march)
1) Win Virginia's BAR (Best All Around Rider) for my Cat.
2) Upgrade to Cat 3
3) Make it to Collegiate Nationals
For Sure Goals
1) Ride 29 days a month (aside from surgery)
2) (re) Start a local women's only ride (early march)
3) Be a good mentor to the junior I'm sponsoring on the team.
4) Lose the &$*@% last 8 pounds/5% bf that need to go.
5) Lift a minimum of 4 days a week
6) First Adventure Race, and maybe the whole local series.

I hope to lose the remaining 70 pounds by year 2006 end if NOT SOONER. I WILL get at LEAST 1 century next year as early as possible. :D

My goals are:
At least one 200k Brevet.
Two Centuries in two days: Santa Fe Century and Horse Farm Hundred in October.
A less than 10 minute mile average in 5k or longer, "running."
A less than 10 hour Wickham Park Marathon (Before you laugh, check out the website and how many women have even _finished_ in 11 years. I've finished twice. http://www.mattmahoney.net/wickham/ )
Or, alternately, 50k at Wickham Park. Really, it's just one more lap...
Complete the Crystal River Sprint Triathlon series.
Somehow, I'm less scared than I was last year, when I merely wanted to ride a Century, do a triathlon, and run 50 miles. The 50 miles didn't work out- I'm blaming my work schedule, but I got the two others!!

To ride again

A newbie's list:
Stop using the hand-me-down and buy a bike that fits and that makes me smile every time I look at it.
Ride more than just once or twice a week.
Learn some basic bike maintenance and get better at my bike handling skills.
Ride enough during the year to be able to do a half century for my half century birthday in October. (Shh, that's the secret goal; I really, really want to do it, but I have a history of making goals for myself and not meeting them and then getting mad at myself. So I plan to trick myself into thinking it's not a goal, do it anyway, and then be doubly happy).

1) Complete the 2006 AIDS Lifecycle (SF-LA- 585 miles in 7 days) (this goal incorporates the "do a century" goal - probably by March  )
2) keep losing weight, getting stronger, and liking myself more
3) ride all the way to the top of Mt. Diablo
4) make the "Keep Calm and Carry On" WWII poster in my office my daily (hourly!) mantra
5) get back "on the cushion " and meditate regulary (see #4!)
I guess that'll do!

To ride 3/4 of the AIDSLifeCycle ...what's that? 438.75 miles.

Simple goals, in no particular order.

take a break from the AIDS ride but better not get tooooo outa shape so I can do it again in 2007 so....
to ride the equivelant of it in miles on ALC training rides.
do the Top Hat.
all of BATO.
bike commute more, try to have balance in my bikeing, dog walkies and Aikido.
and Shadon, 3/4 my a**, you will do it all! Reach for the stars and you may miss and hit the moon. Train to do the whole ride. Get to rest stop 4 each day. Just the idea of seeing what those guys do each day kept me goin'. And then it's just a short ride to camp.
For example if you can do the Cindy and a longish ride the next day, and one or two other metrics before June like Primavera, Day on the Ride, you will do jest fine.
Lots of base miles right now. Subliminal hint: base miles base miles base miles.
On ALC3 my plan was train harder than the actual ride, then treat ALC like a 7 day recovery ride. Focus on recovery each day, hydrate, eat lots. Kinda blew it on Day 4 but otherwise ok.
This year went a lot better. Trained more, ate more!! Rode all but 10 miles.
Oh, I forgot a goal acheive world peace :)
Oh, and have fun

Goals for 2006:
1. Ride more than once or twice a week; lately it's been more like once or twice a month!
2. Stop being afraid of the mountain lions and get back out on the dirt.
3. Incorporate strength training and stretching.
4. Eat more and smarter to reduce this middle age, perimenopausal fat that keeps hanging around. ;)

1. Ride 5000 miles. Same goal as this year. I thought about upping it since I hit my goal Thanksgiving Day (woohoo!) but I don't think I can increase my mileage significantly without sacrificing other activites I enjoy (running, soccer) or having riding become a chore. First and foremost, I want the riding to remain fun.
2. Run a sub-55 minute 10K in a qualifier race so I can get in a seeded timegroup for the Peachtree Road Race.
3. Improve my duathlon time from 2 yrs ago. I got a DNF in the only duathlon I did last year due to mechanical problems.
4. Dare I say it??? Enter a road bike race. OK, now that it's out there, I guess I've got to do it. I've done plenty of running races and a couple of duathlons so I'm not sure why I'm so nervous about racing on my bike. I've joined a club team so hopefully by training with them, I can get the confidence to get out there and do it.
5. Climb Brasstown Bald. This is a tough, tough climb. It's not long (only a couple of miles) but it's steep. There's one section called 'The Wall' that is 20% grade.

Great question :D
To be strong enough to climb the steep hills without falling over. I'm afraid this has happened in the past because I can't seem to unclip fast enough when my legs turn into logs :(
I also want to do my first century, as well as the MS 150.
To do another rim-to-rim-to-rim Grand Canyon hike. But this time I want to do the entire hike in under twentyfour hours...no sleeping on the North rim! No tears either...last time my IT band went bonkers and I had to do eleven hours of the hike in intense pain
Free time to fly back to Phoenix for as many training hikes up and down Camelback Mountain that I can possibly fit in...and as long as I'm there...a few hikes up and down Piestua Peak (aka Squaw Peak) for good measure too.
To do the Danskin tri without the aid of a swim angel. Gonna need lots of practice time in the water if that is going to happen!
Last, but not least, to keep riding these rolling Austin hills... to get stronger, faster, and perhaps a little lighter in the saddle.
Whew, I'm already tired and it's only November! ;)
karri
I've been lurking on this thread for the past few days, I didn't really know what to say. Still don't.
My objective in 2005 was to ride 1500 km. It was my first real season on the bike. I am now at 4200 km or so, and hoping I can ride 300 km before the end of December. My other objective was to stop being afraid of hills. That's pretty much done too: I now consider hitting the slopes of the very hilly neighborhood where I live a fun way to spend an hour.
Since moving from Montreal to Vancouver, I have started considering that doing a triathlon is an accessible challenge. I am NOT a swimmer, but I'm learning, and I love running again. I have registered for the UBC Triathlon in March.
SO:
Increasing mileage will probably happen, especially since I will start riding in January, not April, this year. But it's not a specific objective.
My only real objective for 2006 is to do a sprint triathlon in March. Maybe I'll decide to do another one after that...
I will not enter road races... at least not for now. Even the simplest of accidents could be highly problematic for me, I really need my two arms right now, and I find road races a bit too risky for that.
But: I will keep riding with my new club and work more closely with the coach. I want to build speed a bit.
I hear of a couple of big hills around here, the kind of hills that take an hour to climb. I want to start tackling them in the Spring. There's nothing like getting to the top.
Most importantly, I want to keep cycling (and running and swimming) because it helps me keep a good balance and spirit to keep up with my work (being a PhD student). I want to keep having fun and smiling like a fool when I get to the top of hills or zoom down.
I guess that's that.
Oh, I also have an objective for 2007: doing a short triathlon with my mom in March of 2007. She sent me an email today (she's in Florida with my Dad right now) saying that she takes walks in the morning and then rides her city bike around Fort Lauderdale and swims in the afternoon. Triathlon! I called her immediately and asked her to do the short triathlon of UBC with me in March of 2007. I also asked her NOT to answer now and think about it. So I guess convincing her to do that with me in 2007 will be another goal for 2006. :)

Totally inspired by all the posts here!
Thought I'd put my down in writing so I can revisit in a year's time and put little checks beside them (I hope).
1. Keep on riding! Would like to ride 10K next year and do my first century (not metric)
2. Bike up a infamous local grind that has 4 tight switchbacks and is uber-steep
3. Join a bike club
4. Race a road race
5. Run my first marathon (Chicago is the plan)
6. Compete in my first Olympic tri (couple of sprints under my belt now!)
AND...*drumroll please*....
7. Find a hot guy who loves biking as much as I do...whoops was this about athletic goals????? :p
All of the above are commitments with the exception of 7 which I will pencil in for now.

For 2006 I would like to ride at least one century.
I want to ride or get to the gym at least three times a week.
Total miles...at least 1500.
There are several uphill sections of our local mountain bike Trail of Tears that I want to be able to do without falling over...Same for the downhill parts.
I want to keep my weight between 110-115. That will require the above AND avoiding the never-ending supply of chocolate and sweets that will appear at work from now until after Easter!
What a wonderful thread this is. I've been off the site for a few days, working and computer problems. So cool to come back and find all these amazing goals. As for me...
Research and buy a "real" triathlon bike. Then "really" train for the tri, not just ride my bike whenever and wherever I feel like it.
Do two sprint and two Olympic distance triathlons. The last one in Lake Geneva, WI, to check out the course. If I can hack the hills, my goal is to do a 1/2 Ironman tri there in '07.
Run a 1/2 marathon in May, another in Sept, and the Chicago Marathon in October. Find my "all day pace", and run for miles with that.
And, in the spirit of blue rider, to find a really wonderful partner who loves to bike and run and wants to be with me more and more as the days go by...
Plus, if I could lose the belly fat.... :D I'd look a lot cuter in those biking jerseys!
Best wishes to all! Lise
You are all amazing!
My goals are fairly simple this year:
make it through another year of school - just a year and a half to go!
keep up with the training plan I wrote out in November (when I should have been studying...)
Ride in the Test of Metal again and improve on my time from last year
try to not be too hard on myself if I don't live up to my own expectations
start doing more mountain biking again - it was my passion, but I lost it somewhere along the way
make more time for doggy belly rubs (this is an important step toward reaching world peace :D )
oh, and survive my bike commutes - you should see me in the mornings, all lit up like a neon green Christmas tree decorated with red and white flashing lights...

My goals:
1. Stop lurking so much on this forum and start posting!
2. To join the local bike club and do as many rides and events as possible.
3. To increase my hill work, having discovered that hills are the secret incredient to any good training plan! Well, actually, it's not that secret, I've just been in denial!
4. To find more time to run and swim ... and bike!
5. To increase my mileage.
6. To show restraint when walking into a bike store.
7. To further develop my ridiculous tan lines.
8. To continue my quest to convert the unsuspecting into cycling, until the last pair of eyes on earth glaze over.

"2) have something left in my legs, I tried to do Bike Against the Odds in October, not only did not do the metric century, barely completed the 20 was tired. So riding farther on BATO is my true goal"
Did that, did the 30, now really wanna do the metric
"3) try Mt. Diablo again for the cookies."

After a very mixed year in 2005 when my mileage has taken serious hits due to injury, family responsibilities and work requirements; I'm nervous about setting goals that I might not be able to keep. Here they are anyway:
1. A winter century, which I have never done. Hopefully on Jan.1.
2. Both days of the Pan-Mass Challenge, which will require raising a
thousand dollars more than I did this year.
3. Turn the Pan-Mass into a Trans-Mass, and start the Friday morning
from Stockbridge, MA and ride to the Sturbridge, MA start of the
PMC, then continue on to Bourne and Provincetown. That would make
it roughly a 270 mile, 3 day ride.
4. Complete the seat mounted hydration system I'm working on. If speed
is not a concern, it should be doable for much less than the NeverReach
system.

Ok so these are more than just fitness:
#1 (and this is top priority): Graduate from my ADN (RN) program in May
#2 Pass the NCLEX
#3 Do the above and begin a fitness, bike riding, gym going program. I have the bike, helmet, clothing, just need to get my new/used bike fitted to me so it's comfortable.
#4 Use the fitness/bike riding to decrease the tremendous amount of stress in my life and increase my physical well-being.
#5 Laugh more with my children and spend more time with my husband
#6 Realize there is more to life than hard work and the hard work feels better when there is more enjoyment of life.

Like newsmith, I am afraid of setting a goal, because I didn't make mine this year, due to no other reason than laziness. My goal was 2500 miles, which I though was a stretch for me, since the year before I only did 1795. I am at 2375 and with snow on the ground and a temperature of 28, my riding season is over. Some have said to count my spin class miles (roughly one hour equals 15 miles?) since October, but I think that is cheating. I certainly haven't stopped exercising, but looking at some of these goals (ultra endurance or even triathalons), I feel like a wimp. I am in shape and look fine, but I just can't seem to do more than I do. That said, I would like to try the 2500 mile goal again and perhaps pass it a bit. Definitely do a century. I rode 70 miles a couple of times the year before this, but didn't do many 50 mile rides this year. I also would like to do a longer charity ride, but i am not ready for the Pan Mass, mostly because I don't want to beg people for the $ 3000! But secretly,I would like to do it someday.

Newbie here. Do you do the century in one go? Does this literally mean 100 miles without stopping?!!! Gosh!!! I live in Australia, and we talk in km, and I take my hats to ALL of you  I've still yet to do 50 km :o which would be a great goal for me for about March.
I'd like to do the Sydney to 'Gong ride which is about 80 kms by late next year!

I love reading all these - great motivation and energy here!
1) to count my mileage, lol
2) complete a century
3) complete a 12 hour solo endurance mtb race
4) teach my 3 yo to ride a bike
5) learn bike maintanence and
HAVE FUN!!!

* a century a month from March to November
* at least 2,000 miles for 2006, logged on bikejournal.com
* increase average speed from 15 MPH to 17 MPH
* double century in August
All of these are very obtainable goals for me. The hardest being the double, but even with that, I'm being "mentored" by a friend who is a randoneer. Our training program starts this month, so I feel pretty confidant that I can do it. I too have enjoyed reading everyone's goals...perhaps a sticky could be placed on this thread so we can all check in with our progress throughout the year?

Good call on a thread, BikerChick... alot of inspiration and motivation to be had from these posts...
Some of you have such huge distance/ride goals... Mary (such an inspiration), SadieKate, Nanci, Shadon, Trek, Luvn'Austin, BlueRider, WaveDancer, Alpine Rabbit, NewfSmith, Allabouteva (Welcome to the board!), MtDarby...
Mileage goals... some with a number attached, sometimes "more than this year" ... Corsair, Makbike, Grog, Tator, Veekcee, Skibum, Snappy, MickChick, KatieBelle, Allez
CindySue, Trek, Bikerz, LateLate, JoBob... goals like me to change shape just a tad more and increase overall fitness...
New bike goals... LOL, Corsiar, tlKiwi, LaughLaugh ... I am still lusting after a De Rosa... although the new Trinity for TT is pretty damn sweet
Enter and/or in races/categories... way to go RunnerGirl, SnowTulip ... or thrash hills... my kinda talk, Googlie...
To be well again... healing hugs for you Karen... no its not too much to ask... day by day...
To get your bikes dirtier... tlKiwi, AMG...
A few with goals like me - get that TT sussed, faster, getting on top of a bigger gear... Traveller
And I must agree with Runner2... have more laugh, less angry... absolutely!
To ride more with our partners, to enter our first races, to ride further and better than we have, to be fitter and stronger... what an awesome thread...
Look out 2006... the girls from TE are coming!
I will join the bike club this year that half my family already belong to...
I will acieve the times I have set myself in 50km races (1hr45min in January race, 1hr40mins in October on a hillier course)
I will be competitive in local races in TTs in my age group
Depending on fitness, I am hoping to enter the regional competition here - East Coast Champs in the TT section...

ROFLMAO - well yes! Sorry hun, your line just cracked me up!! I did my first 1/2 century in May, did my first metric century the following week and my first full century the third week. What I learned was: it isn't the miles, it's the time. How much time do I have to ride today and how far can I go in that time? I'm betting you can do a 50K, I'm betting you can do 62K! You just need to think of the time instead of the miles!
oh...and I did all 4 of my centuries completely self-supported since I live alone and have no one to SAG. If it wasn't for the wonderful ppl both here and on BJ.com I would've Never dreamed I could do it self-supported. Now.......I just need 8 hrs and warm weather!

Robyn... your goal should be reasonable for YOU! Good lord, I read some of the goals of the other women here and I KNOW there is NO WAY I could keep up! For my first 3 years of riding my goal for the following year was to ride ONE MILE more than the year prior! First year, 700 miles... goal for second year was 701 miles!
You are SO not a wimp! Anyone who rides 2375 miles in a year should be VERY proud of that... I know a whole lotta people who won't even consider dusting their old bike off and riding to the coffee shop! My personal opinion (not that you asked... hey isn't cyber space GREAT? :D ) is that YOU are a kick azz rider!!!
allabouteva... LOL yep, all in one day. It sounds MUCH more difficult than it is... I truly, truly believe that anything above 50 miles in a day is MENTAL! The hardest part after 50 miles is believing that you can do it! Corsair is right on... time is the biggest issue. My avg century is 6 1/2 to 7 hours ride time... I'm slow, but I always finish! :D ;)

bikerchick68 - I dont think 6 1/2 or 7 hours is slow. If I get to do a century next year I will post the time and then you will know slow. Looking at my current averages Im thinking if I can do a century in around 8 to 8 1/2 I will be happy. Mind I would be happy just to finish one even if everyone else had already gone home. :o

I've updated my goals for 2006 so I'll post them here.
Continue to lose the remaining 70 pounds to get to my goal weight
Ride at least 4,860 miles, more likely 5,000 to complete my online Virtual Trans-Canadian Highway ride at BikeJournal.com
Ride at least 12 metric centuries
Get my first Imperial century as close to the beginning of the year as possible.
Ride the Metric or Century at Wild Ride
FINISH the ENTIRE Hilly Hundred route and walk fewer hills
Meet or BEAT Marlin's mileage - Be prepared to hear ON YER LEFT Marlin!!
(He's only (+1661.6) with a year of riding to my 2101.3 since July... Gonna get ya!) LOL [Marlin is my former band director from Jr High School 33 yrs ago and I ride with him periodically in a group locally]
While I'm at it, I'm going to work on keeping up with the roadies build my speed.
If I can, I'm gonna try on my "Little Navigator That Could"

Gosh, is it goals time already? OK, here are mine (subject to change without notice, duh.)
1) Finish the ride I started last year. I thought that ending in Sioux City was fine and that I was OK with it. It's not. I'm not. I have to finish. Sioux City to Lincoln, here I come. At least now, my daily mileage planning will be more in line with reality.
2) DH and I are going to ride the Katy Trail (most of the way across Missouri, no hills to speak of) and play tourist to a fare-thee-well. This one will NOT be about raw mileage, but being a couple. I'm really looking forward to it.
3) Increase my mileage goal by a thousand miles (again) this year. I hit 2005 (this year's goal) in August and promptly lost all motivation. So. 3000 miles it is - unless I decide on a virtual RAAM - what ever that mileage will be in 2006. The two tours I'm planning (which are NOT about mileage) will help no end with this. Hey, did I claim to be consistant?
4) Um, do something about my core strength. Pilates, yoga, weights, magic, something. The 'bent and the desk job are not kind to the shape of my middle.

I love the Katy Trail...I grew up in MO and went to collage at Mizzou (no Huskers football comments, please!) and used to ride my MTB on it quite a bit. Are you doing the ride in June that goes from end to end, or going it alone?

1) Ride the switchbacks up Duffy Lakes Road (and then back down. Wheee!)
2) Enter, and finish before the cut off, my first LONG distance mountain bike race (72km, 1200 metres of climbing)
3) Shave 3-5 minutes off my lap times in the 24 Hours of Adrenaline
4) possibly Race another 80km mountain bike race in August (depending on how #2 goes...)
5) rejoin my weekly road riding group come April and not get dropped
6) take off the 8 pounds that I've somehow added. (8 pounds on a 4'11" frame is a lot for me)
7) Meet a lovely guy who doesn't live out of his truck, bathes regularly, lives to be active (including biking of course) and knows how to spell.

Denise already posted the links for the Katy - thanks Denise, my bad.
I make no comments on Huskers/Mizzou. I'm really not that interested in college football. This drives my co-workers crazy.
No, I'm not doing an organized ride (except maybe RAGBRAI) in the forseeable future. I prefer my solo/2-person unorganized rides. So, no organized Katy Trail ride for me.
We are planning on starting about where the trail gets interesting and the Amtrak commuter stops (Clinton?), leave the car there, ride to St. Louis (sampling all the offerings along the way), do the Arch thing, and whatever else, in St. Louis, then catch Amtrak back to the car. This is planned for the fall, so I have more than enough time to work out details.
I'm hoping for some wonderful, colorful leaves. *sigh*

Karri... I use a western states ride calender that shows all the rides available out here... plus I do my own routes quite often... the longer I ride, the more people I meet, the more routes I learn! I am a "chatty kathy" type who will talk to anyone who will respond, and hck even those who won't! LOL...
next time you're in your LBS ask them about local routes etc. I know our local Trek Store has maps available of many popular routes for newbies and also for cyclists who are here on vaca and don't know where to ride!
I prefer riding with others, but have ridden alone too... but I have never done a century alone. I planned to ride my first one alone in Jan but no have 5 other people riding with me... all are century virgins! WOOT! It should be a fun day... the best part of riding an organized century IMHO is that you have sags, food and restrooms all pre-planned for you... plus you can jump into a pack and draft as needed as long as ya take a pull too! really helps conserve energy...
and if you get base miles in I'm SURE you can ride a century!!! Just keep riding and log up those miles... keep us posted OK? looking forward to hearing how you're doing too!!!
Here's links of some rides for you... :)

bikerchick68, thanks for the response and the websites. I'm headed there in a minute to check them out! I did one organized ride last summer with my brother in North Dakota. It was a three day ride and the longest day was only 69 miles. Loved knowing the sag people were on the route! I had a great time and can't wait to try a century next year.
I hope to do the MS 150 with some local friends and if they enjoy that....perhaps they will buy my sales pitch for a century! :D

Alrighty, my goals are pretty basic since I just started this year, but here it goes:
- Get more riding time in, which should happen since my class schedule is lighter
- Become more confident on the technical portions and trust my own ability, ie not chicken out on doing something I figured out how to do the week before the next time I do the same trail
- Since I'm moving, figure out the trails in the area and find someone to ride with
- at least keep my overall fitness level where it is, if not increase it
- and not freak out over the Boards I have to take in June and of course do well on them
hat's about it. Like I said, pretty basic. :)

Thanks, Bikerchic for the encouragement. I just got back from 4 days of nature camp with 120 sixth graders. We had to drive home in a blizzard and a 2.5 hr. drive took 6 hours. There's at least a foot of snow, maybe more. Time for the x-country skis to come out. And the new snow shoes...
While I was putting my gear away, I wistfully looked at my bike shoes.

Wow, y'all.... everybody's goals are great.
My goal for 2006 is to put in 1200 miles - about as many as I would if I was to continue commuting to work, which is a 7 mile round trip, 3-4 days a week. I'm starting school in January and won't be able to take my bike, so I'll have to find/make other time to put in the same mileage.

Dum de dum...Right..goals..
1-To beat our mileage from driving to Melbourne...Meaning I have to do at least 3200km's from jan 1-dec 31s...(ian has done 4200k's this year...)
How am i going to do this...Weeell...i'm going to bike at least 5 times a week...normal distances like i do now...30-50k's...plus our Tri training group rides...
2-To work on logs...pesky as they are, they're on every course the perth mtb does on thier races.
3-to do the perth mtb races in the recreation women's class...just for fun & to push myself...

I want to do at least 2400 miles this year - Jan 02 begins a new riding season - my trainer is baited and waiting in the hall!
No motivation to set goals right now. I'm contented being lazy, lazy, lazy. :D
I want to join the racing team in the area but the team captain is ignoring my two e-mails on the subject. Don't know what to think about that but am certainly giving him the benefit of the doubt. I'd even like to hook up with the women on the team just to get to know them and get plugged into their routine. No such luck it seems.
Heck, I've even let him know I am new to the area so a little help would be very much appreciated.
I won't bother him any more. He is being rude.

I'm going to start small and simple:
Ride more "real rides" which will be easier this year since I'm no longer teaching 8 spinning classes a week, just three. (Plus I just bought two road bikes...see my "What am I going to do now?" thread).
Spend more time on my own fitness even if I have to make appointments with myself (I'm a Personal Trainer by trade).
Play golf at least a few times this summer with my DH, and maybe he'll go on a couple rides with me. (One can always hope).
Participate more and lurk less.......

I'm adding a goal and blaming you gals (Veronica, Kim and jobob if you want specific names ;) ). Last year I had fun as a newbie on the TE Girls' Hill Training Program. I set 100,000 ft or 80 Empire State Buildings as a goal.
Year 2 it will be the Seven Summits. This is a cumulative total of the tallest peak from each continent.
Last year I didn't start until Presidents' Day (mid-Feb here in the US) when I rode Diablo the first time. If the weather cooperates I can start earlier.

What cyclometer do you use? (I'm sure that is in a post somewhere, but I'm not sure how best to locate it). My wacky Specialized P-brain packed up in August, after several months of completely wrong elevation recording, and I just found out I can apply the purchase price towards a new Polar computer - I'm probably going to get the S720i.

Yep, that's what I have. It is the newer version of what Veronica uses. I'm seeing some good reports on the VDO that TrekHawk got for Xmas but the VDO isn't downloadable (or have HRM) so you can't create elevation profiles. I like the visual graph of the hills. Especially when you take a flatland ride and distort the image so it looks like HUGE hills.:D
I used my REI dividend last year and with the new year sale they have, I got a pretty good price.

Long time no posts!!! I've really been out of it this year. Too much personal goo to wade through. So here are my goals:
1. Ride my trainer everyday until I can get back outside! This means making it longer than 25 minutes without sagging from bordem.
2. Ride PALM (peddle across lower Michigan)with one of my oldest friends.
3. Ride my first century. I didn't try it last year (too much heat and life goo!)
4. Backpack at least twice this summer (destination to be determined).
5. Be happy. Be calm. Don't let people mess with my Chi.

I, like many, avoid these goal setting exercises as it may only be an opportunity to admit failure. But so sad to never make the effort! My two most important goals for last year were made, the rest I've forgotten... A nice way to deal with failure-- just forget!
2006 goals
>Keep the dogs happy. They asked to be put first on the list.
>Really, really, really work on fitness and rid myself of some baggage.
>Be happy. appreciate what I have. Don't want/yearn for what I don't need.
>Become more active socially and politically. Communicate more effectively.
>Get my hand roll. Do Ride the Rockies. Do an MS150. Ride in Utah this spring and fall. Ski 14 days, steeper and deeper.
>Oh yeah get that new FS mountain bike.

well, i figure if i actually *type* my goals and post them here, i'll be held accountable, right?! :p
this is mostly a "rebuilding" my previous skills (after planned time-off and un-planned injuries) year. so, here goes:
1) regain my fitness level (esp. endurance) from last fall and improve on it... i want to be able to ride with my male teammates again without bonking!
2) lose the last 5 of the 20+ lbs. i gained while studying abroad!
3) improve flexibility... again, mostly regaining what i had last year! not sure how i'll measure this one... i can touch my toes again, but i'll make palm-on-floor my goal
4) learn how to ride down hills on my mtb again! (dislocated my right shoulder after going over the bars on a downhill in october and have been feeling "off" for the last two months) so... the giant tobbagan hill that *used* to be my all-time favorite will be my goal for once the snow melts.
(build up my arm/shoulder-strength too, so it doesn't happen again... so i'll continue rock climbing at work-- yes, it's part of my job  -- rather than "supervising the desk area." I work in a rock gym. and i'll swim on my lunchbreaks twice a week with my non-cycling friend, who has made the same goal :) )
5) abso-bloody-lutely no dairy. and cut back on refined sugar. if only i could remember what it does to my body *before* i'm curled up on the couch wheezing!
6) er... something happy now... keep my new baby well-lubed, well-tuned, and sparkly-clean after every ride! :D
7) get outside to crosstrain as much as possible this winter... being stuck inside gives me the blahs... therefore, i will keep my XC skis well-waxed and ready to go!
8) improve my finishes in the two "A" races i did this year
9) explore my adopted home-state by backpacking and camping... every weekend this summer (that i'm home) i'll find a new trail to ride or hike (ooh, this could be a toughie... but if i'm hiking up north, i can always bring a bike along too... and maybe find a hike near a race if it's a "road-weekend"... and mtb race-trails TOTALLY count-- if i haven't ridden them before!). chances are i'll be camping anyway if it's a race weekend :D
10) 24 hours of Boyne, baby! (24-hour mtb in June) i think that'll be a nice test o' endurance... a good check of how i'm feeling after a full season of road-training too. i don't think i could've ridden it last october (the time of my peak-fitness so far) :D
and i'll leave it at a nice even 10 :)
thanks for reading and keeping me on-track, ladies! best wishes in all of your goals!! :)

As of right now my mileage goal is 5000 with the option of increasing it. I figured I got 2500 miles in 2005 between July and December so I should be able to double that with a full year at least.
I'm going to lose the rest of my 70 pounds by years end, sooner if possible. I'm going to get at least one metric a month [or 12 metrics for the year]
I'm going to get an imperial century first opportunity that I can.
I'm going to ride in the http://hillyhundred.org 2006 Hilly Hundred hopefully both days if I can get my volunteer work scheduled that way AND I'm going to RIDE more of the hills!
I'm going to ride as many http://cibaride.org CIBA rides as possible this year.
I'm going to increase my average speed as best as I can on the Little Navigator That Could and all 46 pounds of her and keep up with the roadies.
I think that's a good start for now...
Here's to 2006 everyone...
Mary
PS: Sorry about the size of the photos..
As of this morning, I'm STILL ahead of Marlin with 59 miles to his 15.. I'm gonna enjoy it while I can :p :D

Goal for 2006: Newbie
~ Ride atleast once a week for a minimum of 15 miles or 1 hour and a half.
~ Ride a half-Century: Cinderella
~ work out 3X's a week at the university gym
~ with all this to say, flabby butt and legs will be firmer, endurance stronger and the love of riding without looking at the time or the miles will just be wonderful!!

Health:
- 4,000 cycling miles for 2006.
- Bike commute at least once a week.
- Eat three square meals, two healthy snacks and nothing after dinner/while watching TV.
- Lift weights 2x a week.
- Swim 2x a week.
Financial:
- Contribute $4,000 to my 401(k).
- Reduce credit card debt. (I can't even put how much it is or my goal, it makes me a little too naseous to think about -- that's what I get for buying a new bike!)
Spiritual:
- E-mail or call at least one long-distance friend once a week.
- Read one good book every month.
- Attend church 2-3x month.

Never done this before so here goes:
Physical: Continue working with weights, and attempt to reveal all that fabulous muscle that is lying beneath the most persistent fat mass known to humankind
Cycle at least twice a week with a minimum collective distance of 100k.
Ride to the top of Norton Summit without stopping (have done it twice so far, but with breaks - ow!)
Find bike shorts that do not make my soft bits feel as though my chamois is made of sandpaper
Mental: Stop listening to people making fun of middle aged women in bike shorts
Stop listening to voices in own head about middle aged women in bike shorts
Accept that the goddesses flying past me on the road are just thirty years younger; it's not personal

Well my short term goal is to actually get my bike into my trainer and start riding the dang thing again. It's been sitting in my garage since late september. I'm sure Ferris (my Lemond) is very upset with me.
I'm so p*ssed at myself. I suppose I could blame the flare up I had of crohn's disease, but I *could* have ridden some. I lost all my speed and endurance within a month's time so I got discouraged so I stopped riding altogether. Then when I felt better I had just fallen out of the habit.
Ok so 2006 goals:
1) Start training in January versus my normal slacking off til March/April
2) Complete either the ride across indiana (RAIN) again or do the seattle-to-portland (STP) ride for the first time.
3) Actually enter a race or 2
4) Complete RAGBRAI for the 4th year in a row
5) Log a total of 5000 miles (road and trainer, I'll cheat) I did 2700 road miles in 05 (between March and September) and my goal was 3000. Doh! So I think I can reach 5000 if I stay motivated (and well).
6) Ride at least 6 centuries (not including RAIN, STP, or RAGBRAI)
7) Do at least 1 fundraiser/charity ride

Another newbie's biking goal for 2006:
To finish this event I signed up for and which is getting me into biking in the first place!
http://www.cycletour.co.za/event.asp
Anybody else going to South Africa for this ride?
I have lots of little goals that I hope to reach while I train for this event. Unfortunately, most of my training lately has been in eating peanut brittle and watching TV. Not encouraging...
Going to try to finish my first metric century on Sunday, which is 33 miles further than I've ever ridden before.

Well, my goal as a newbie biker of less than a month, at my ancient age of 62 and weight of 300lbs is:
(1) ride at least 20 miles by fall's end
(2) lose at least 100 lbs by Christmas or New Years:eek:
(3) have to take LESS medication, hurt less and have more energy!
(4) meet some of the TE gals at Little Red Riding Hood in June
(5) LIVE LONG, LIVE WELL AND LIVE LEAN.....AHHHHHHH...:D

My goal for this year was to get in good enough shape to ride the Cindy and not make a fool of myself. Well ... but for riding a really dorky bike, I guess I did that. Made it to 43 miles. My longest ride ever ... so far.
Now my goal is to get back on the bike and do some more. After Easter week, that is, when the dorky bike and I are both back in Wisconsin. Before then we'll see if I can translate some of my newfound bike muscles into keeping up with DH while hiking in Scotland.
Not having as much success with my third goal of losing some weight. But I'll keep working on that one too.
Oh, and goal 4: sell the bike when I leave here. I have a better one back in Norway.

Seems I have similar goals to Bikeless (my mom)...:
1. Keep up with BF (and bikeless's DH) when hiking in Scotland at easter (and any other future hikes).
2. Loose a bit of weight, or at least get a bit more fit. I don't own a scale, but I want to get back into clothes that used to fit and now no longer do.
A couple of cycling goals:
1. Do the 40mile charity ride I just signed up for in June
2. Get enough base miles in to convince myself that I can do the AidsRide with Trek420 in 2007.
3. Ride every week. I have no idea what a realistic milage goal would be so I won't set one, but I want to try to do at least one ride a week on top of the usual commuting.
...and finally, goals for life in general:
1. complete my thesis
2. travel more, see the world (or at least as much as I can afford to see)...I'm already off to a good start. I have a work-trip to Poland coming up in a week, and then easter hiking in Scotland. Two new countries to add to my list of places seen :D

Cycling goals (also a n00b!)
1. Get better at climbing hills!!!
2. Be able to hang with the big boys!
3. Stop making excuses, and GET OUT AND RIDE
4. Century by the end of September
5. Commute to work more than once a week (or if I get a different job, figure out a way to still commute to work at least 1x a week). Start NO LATER than April.
Other goals
1. Pay off credit card by year's end
2. Raise at least (hopefully more) than $1000 for Climb4Life (see signature)
3. Get my lead head back

Goals for the year...
- get better at climbing!
- improve core strength.
- ride the following charity rides:
- Cycle for Independence, 62 miles in Boise, in May
- LRRH, 100miles, Utah, June
- Bob LeBow Bike Tour, 62 miles, Boise, June
- Blue Cruise, 100 miles, Boise, August
- finish the year with over two thousand miles.

My goal is to get back into the physical condition I had before my foot surgery on December 13th. I have been in a cast and on crutches for 3 1/2 months. As a matter of fact, today I go in to see my doctor and he promised at my last visit that this would be the day I may shed this boot cast and begin riding again. (Shhhh I've been spinning on my trainer for two weeks!) Slow to start (of course). Now the hard work begins. But I'm up for the challenge. My leg looks like a stick with a noodle attached. It's a sad pathetic shadow of the calf it used to be. Before the surgery I was a road cycling - mountain biking fiend. I hope by June to be up to at least 50 miles again on my road bike and I want to be able to ride Lake Sawyer's technical trails again. I don't think I will be doing any centuries this summer? Or maybe I will? LOL I'm pretty tenacious. But next year . . . look out! :D

Cool thread - thanks for bumping it!
Goals:
- To help, encourage, goad, motivate, etc. the group of team in training coaches I am coaching to complete the Death Ride this year (130 miles, 5 mountain passes, 14,000 feet of climbing). These are some great women who have been cycling for forever, but this will be a big challenge for them and I am so excited to be part of this!!! (DH and a couple of other stronger riders are also part of the group I am coaching, and it will be great to work with them on completeing the event, but I think it's really going to feel special to see some of these women who will no doubt struggle on the training and in the event make the time cut off and complete the 5 passes.)
- To complete 5 double centuries (2 more than last year) and to feel better than I did last year on one of them in particular! (Mt. Tam Double) :D
- To be there for my daughter. To laugh with her and make her feel important, cool, loved. Maybe do another metric century on the tandem while we're at it.
Well, I think those are the main ones. I will probably do something with the Furnace Creek 508 (2 person or maybe solo if I get really stupid). But right now that's not a "goal", just an inevitability. And I just haven't decided yet what to do with it.

I am amazed at how fit you ladies are! I'm getting tired just reading the mileage some of you do. Centuries and double centuries!
For 2006 I am trying to:
-increase my yearly distance to 2500km minimum (almost made it in 2004, flagged a little in 05)...making good progress now..<touching wood>
-do at least one metric century (100km), and hopefully more
-lose 15kg weight (about 35 pounds)
-worry less! I'm a total worrywart...I really need to get control of worry/anxiety/depression naurally, without pills and potions. Uh-uh. I need less stress and a little more maƱana. :p
Good luck to you all on your goals!

My goals for 2006:
cycling goals
1) buy a nice roadbike (actually I'd be happy with anything lighter and faster than my Trek7.2FX)
2) start commuting for in-town errands
3) ride 10-20 miles/day at least 3 days per week
4) take more fun rides with my husband and kids
5) teach my daughter to ride without training wheels.
other goals:
1) pay off credit cards
2) play with my kids more
3) relax

Year 2 it [climbing goal] will be the Seven Summits. This is a cumulative total of the tallest peak from each continent.
Last year I didn't start until Presidents' Day (mid-Feb here in the US) when I rode Diablo the first time. If the weather cooperates I can start earlier.
Finally reached the first of the summits. With the weather, I've been sticking close to home which means no hills and the only bumps are free bridges. At least I've made a little headway. Pitiful. 16,855 as of today.

How's everyone doing on their goals? I'm a little bummed because the weather put all my plans out of whack but there is still time to accomplish all (except maybe the TT speed but we'll see). And I have done nothing about finding that 24-hr race.
I am making slow headway on my climbing goal of 143,405 with a pitiful 29,000 ft. Again, Mother Nature intervened. Oh well, I'm getting out there riding.
A 200k brevet/permanent/populaire
A 24-hr team mtb race (plus a shorter version as practice)
A 21 mph (or faster :) ) 10 mile TT with my triple crankset century-comfy non-aero Litespeed (means 31 secs faster than my PB)
I really had fun this year with the total feet climbed, the Bay Area Trifecta and the TTs. . . . The Bay Area Trifecta may become an annual goal, especially since pizza seems to be at the end of the rides. :p

Well, you'll get #1 out of your way this week...
On mine:
I'm 1 of 5 doubles down. Basically I've got a double a month through September (except July, but that's Death Ride month). (Added that 600k, which wasn't a goal - can I make it a retrospective goal? )
508 is looking good - may team up with a woman who's done it solo.
My Death Ride team is doing so-so. Some have not been able to do some of the rides, but I think they will make it. Many of them are doing the 200k this weekend and that wil be a good marker.
And Em and I had a great bike ride Sunday - started out a bit sketchy, but ended up super positive.
Slow and steady progress toward those goals....!

California Triple Crown - Solvang, DMD and one other double, maybe Davis, Hemet or Central Coast. If I can maintain that level of riding until September, I'll do Knoxville.
More mileage than last year.
More climbing than last year.
Veronica
Did Solvang, died on DMD, signed up for Davis, considering Tam. Plan to do Knoxville and maybe Death Valley Fall version.
Mileage: I have 685 more miles for the first 4 months than last year.
Climbing: I'm currently at 113,000+ and I need to get to 211,280.
New goals for the rest of the year are to work on my abs/back three times a week and to do a hard double metric every month to get me better prepared for DMD next year.

The goals I set for the beginning of the year (not posted here...I just found you) have changed. I am having a pretty bad rheumatoid arthritis flare that I am having difficulty getting under control. This is my first one in four years.
First goal is to get my health in order.
Second is to complete the Great Mass Getaway. I have been able to train so life is good in that respect.
Third, my original plan was to do two-three triathlons this year. Now I just want to be able to run again.
Fourth, once I can run, I want to once again do the Hyannis Sprint Tri. One can only hope.
Fifth, and if I can run, the Tufts 10K is in my sights. I have always wanted to do this race.

My goals (2500-3000 miles and maybe a century) sound paltry compared to the stuff I am reading here! What is going on? I know you will say a goal is individual, blah, blah, but I feel like I already live most of my life around cycling (which is good), but I don't want to get obsessive, like I have with other activities. I want cycling to stay fun. Does anyone else out there feel this way?

One of the reasons I decided not to publish my own goals on this forum is that they are just that - my goals. I don't need the comparisons with anyone else's goals that are natural when you start reading through these entries. That said, publishing your goals on a public forum like this one can be good if it helps you to reach for those goals.
I remember when I belonged to and rode with the Charles River Wheelmen (many years ago now...) being awed by the woman who year after year logged above 10000 miles. But then I realized that she commuted by bike year round. That's just not a place I'm going to go. Yes, I do commute to work several days a week during the summer- but I guess you could say I'm a baby and that I require decent weather and daylight for my commute.
When you compare your miles with everyone else's on this forum, don't forget that you live in the cold and dark northeast. I don't think comparing your mileage with someone who lives in a place where the weather easily supports year-round cycling is a fair comparison. Don't be so hard on yourself.

1) bought the bike and love it (Pilot 2.1 WSD)
2) I actually have been commuting for some in town errands - imagine that!
3) I am riding 10 miles/day (5 days a week if I can) and have now done one 20-miler
4) Took a fun ride with mr. fish and fishlets last night, in fact. Need to do more of this
5) Still working on the training wheels thing - but she has her confidence up.
other goals are going well, too.
Maybe I need to set some new goals:
6) ride 200 miles per month
7) start training for triathalon
8) start training for TNT century
There - that ought to do it.

oh, right:
1) Twice I tried to do Bike Against the Odds, not only did not do the metric century, barely completed the 20 and was tired. So riding farther on BATO is my true goal
2) To the top of Mt. Diablo for the cookies.
3) world peace for all and doggie belly rubs for my Mutt Mae and all TE dogs. :D

increase speed
get back to the gym on a regular basis & stop eating junk food

The ride with the fishlets is the best! I did a 15 mile ride with the PetitePois on her relatively new road bike and in some ways its more challenging than riding a century on my own bike! I want her to love it and have it be fun. I want her not to crash. I want her to make it up the hills. She and I are starting to get towards the pre-adolescent mother-daughter times of turmoil. I'm either the best person in the world or the worst. I'm hoping cycling can be fun through all that.
I'm so psyched you're doing the TNT century!

If you can keep the pre-adolescent mother-daughter times from major turmoil, the teen years should be liveable, right?:p I think that having cycling in common is a wonderful way to keep a positive connection between the two of you. If/when she gets crabby - go for a ride together - with hills. It'll help her get the frustrations out and give you two time to talk (on the flats). That would have served me well when I was that age (so long ago).
I can't wait for the 2007 TNT century AND the chance for us to meet! Very awesome!

Centuries that is. I'll be half way there by the end of this month. I'm including some full and metric in the mix.

Sonoma 100m - This Saturday!
MS 150 - Just 2 weeks away
Tour De Tahoe - Really looking forward to this ride
Breast Cancer Ride - I'm planning on the 100m w/ 7,500ft of climbing
Still need to decide on the last one but that should be easy. Heck, I may do more than 6 with some unsupported ones along the coast...
Plus I'm trying to improve my mtb skills this year. That really got under my skin.

I never posted any goals as I didn't really have any. Well, I guess I did, but they didn't really have much to do with cycling.
My goals are always pretty simple. 'Course, I have a naive world view that I refuse to let go of (most of the time...at other times I can be sickeningly cynical).
Ride/exercise regularly.
Stay out of debt.
Spend as much time as possible with DH and good friends.
Walk my dog lots.
Oh, and I guess I do have one "goal" that applies to this year only: catch some fish.

Bwahahahahahaha! Good thing we don't have shad in Utah.
(Private joke, unless you've read the book Founding Fish by John McPhee.)
If I recall correctly, you went on one more fishing trip than I did in '05. Did I not confess that nary a fly was cast from my 3 weight last year? I told DH that I want to go a-casting at the park this weekend, in the event I have forgotten the technique.
