View Full Version : Thanksgiving Rides Planned?

Any riding planned for today? I am keeping a close eye on the weather and deciding if I will ride inside or outside today. I am tempted to wait until after dinner (which is at 1:30) and ride at 4 which is the warmest part of the day. Perhaps I won't eat too much if I know I am going to be getting on the bike later...

Our guests aren't arriving until 2:30 and we will eat at 4 or so. I am planning to ride around 11 for 1-2 hours. Everything is done, DH will set the timer for the oven to start cooking the turkey. The only thing that will stop me is the black ice that is out there now has not melted! It's 30 degrees now and will be in the 40s by 11. The key is that the sun is shining.

Sounds awesome! It is 40 degrees here now, but quite foggy and damp. I think that I am going to ride the trainer this morning, make cookies to take with me, and then ride for pleasure after dinner. It is supposed to be over 50 by 4:00, so hope to be on the bike shortly after 3:30 but will have to see. Tomorrow they are calling for 60 degrees, I will take it :)
This will be my first time on the bike outside in two weeks, so hoping to see some improvement with my neck!
Hoping for a two hour ride after I make another pie. Denver is having unseasonably warm weather so by 10 am, we're looking at 54 deg and 8 mph winds. Yeah! :)
Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Yesterday my weather app said it was going to be over 50 by mid morning....now it says until noon. So I will wait maybe until 11:30 a.m.. My dinner is not until 4 and we ussually spend the rest of the evening with the family. So I will have to take it at least before 1:30.. plus I think they have NFL games all day long and I believe my fave team since I was a kid is playing today ....the SF 49ERS.
Catrin....lets see if one day the indy TE members could meet and ride together. It would be nice.

Did a nice beach and gravel road ride this morning - 12 miles. 80F and sunny. Ah Belize!
Not cooking -- we'll be eating dinner in town later. Even though Thanksgiving is not celebrated here, many of the restaurants are doing t-day dinners for the tourists and expats.
Happy Thanksgiving all! :)

We did the flattest (not saying much) ride out the door, 16.5 miles. One small hill in the beginning and then the climb back up to my house. It was 38 when we started and 42 when we got home; I was overdressed, but my Gore jacket has pit zips, so between unzipping those, and unzipping the jacket and my mid layer, it was tolerable. It's very sunny out and there were lots of cyclists and runners out, doing the same thing as me!
Now to make myself look presentable. Turkey is almost done cooking.

I did a short ride outside today - 65 and sunny:D:D
I really love seeing the world at more of a stand still than usual - biking past closed businesses, etc. It's peaceful in a way.
(except for the person with an I Care (animal) license plate headed to the big vegan Thanksgiving who almost killed me with 2 other lanes available to her.)

Ride a mile for me! Feeling stronger by the minute, but not ready for the bike just yet. I'm pretty sure I'll be ready for Sat's lbs ride, though.
Happy Thanksgiving!
No Thanksgiving celebration in my corner of the world, but appropriately enough - a lovely ride in to work today under clear skies for the first time in weeks, and a chatty pleasant ride home with a friend.

Ride plans were postponed by a trip to the ER for my husband who cut the top of his foot on a piece of broken glass (long story). But after he was stitched up and home again, I went out for 26 miles by myself. High 60's- 70 out, mostly cloudy skies. I rode up to the base of Mt. Lemmon and back, which put me past the 4400 mile mark for the year. Now on to cooking!

Just got back from a casual 37 with DH.
Now to clean up, call mom, and get the half-a-bird in the oven. We won't eat til 6 or so. Working on the post ride cheese and crackers (minus the cheese) right now.

Azfiddle, glad to hear your husband is ok - yikes!
After dinner I came home and went for a ride outside :D Only 10 miles before my body started telling me it was time to stop...but that is further than I got last time, I will take it! I DID get 12 miles on the trainer this morning but that isn't the same. I really miss my long rides, but that will come back in time if I am patient.
Even if I didn't get much further than last time I could tell quite a difference in how I felt, I think the whiplash is healing :) I COULD have pushed it further, and at one time I would have, but why take the risk? Healing properly now = much more rides and smiles later ;)

We just got back from our regular 3 mile ride. Yes, I know it's short, but you have to start somewhere and I'm now at the point of just one break on the 3 mile ride. (Had been two breaks). So I'm getting better and eventually will be able to start adding another mile to it.

Did 10miles around the neighborhood. It was fun...I had the roads to myself and wanted to continue for 10more miles . :-) . I'll catch up tomorrow

Tomorrow will be warmer around here :) More traffic though. I really had fun today just being out riding my bike in the crisp air.
Koronin, congrats on your progress! I remember when I first started riding. Less than 2 years ago I wondered if I would ever be able to break the 10 mile barrier. There isn't a perfect mileage except, perhaps, that which we can do at the time.

Catrin, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks :)
Hey this is Zona from Alabama, I got in a nice 20 miles after dinner, weather was in the low 60's here. Beautiful day for a ride. I too loved the peacefulness of no traffic.

Koronin, I started out on a half-mile trail along with my just-learned-to-ride-a-bike son. Once we were doing that up and back five times and not stopping after every mile, I started looking for other places to ride.
Got in just over 20 miles today; it was dark by the time I was done. I'd say I should have started earlier to get more miles in but my thighs are feeling the ride, and this is very very rare; usually the only thing that hurts when I'm done are my (poor abused) knees and sometimes my sit parts. I haven't been on my bike since the WGC on 10/23 -- a month! Did two short rides in Paris [woot!] on California beach cruisers, but I guess it's just not the same.

owlice, thanks. It's a nice 3 mile route we've made here in the neighborhood. Figure we can eventually extend it in different ways without leaving the neighborhood. Once we can do that, there's a CVS store a mile or two from here and a bran new Family Dollar a bit farther in the other direction. Although both those rides would require riding on the main road. Going to the CVS isn't going to be too bad, once I'm up for that as it's a main road and somewhat busy, but other than rush hour the outside lanes in both directions aren't used too much. Going towards the Family Dollar though same road, but it's a two lane road in that direction, so that will be a bit more dangerous with traffic. Love the idea of riding there though.

I did 10 miles on the local crushed gravel MUP. There are a fair number of ups and downs do I tried to work it hard. It was the warmest day I've seen in a month as I am 500 miles further south than I was last week. Nice!
Ordinarily this path is dead and I might see no one during my morning rides. Yesterday morning on Thanksgiving there were a lot of people on the path. Everyone was nice and friendly including me! But I did have to watch out and not go blazing around blind curves.
I think I"ll do the entire route today, which is 20 miles.

Woo hoo, I'm baaaack! First ride since my lumpectomy Tues, I decided I felt good enough for an easy 18 miles spin. Good thing I was taking it slow, because a parked car pulled out in front of me, no turn signal, only to keep turning left into a driveway across the street. I ended up in the driveway, too. When he finally noticed me and stopped, I gave him the "hairy eyeball" which he may not have noticed from behind my dark glasses. Oh well. I was in a good position to talk to him about what he could do differently to avoid running over people in the future, but I've spent enough time in the saddle to know it's just better to keep my mouth shut and move on. As I stood there trying to get into position to turn around, he told me to go (like he was doing me a favor). An apology would have been nice, but "sorry" is not in the lexicon of drivers around here. I think you could lose your license for that.
The rest of the ride was pretty good. The things I thought might be an issue, climbing and standing, were actually fine. The only discomfort was going over bumps. Makes sense. I ended up standing over them, and really bending my elbows to absorb any shock.
I'm definitely ready to ride tomorrow.

I did 14 miles yesterday on the trail. Wow, do I ever notice a difference in pavement quality between the Little Miami trail and Creekside! Ouch!
My parents borrowed my car (and consequently the bike rack) today, but I'll be getting a ride in tomorrow while it's still quite warm for this time of year.

Congratulations Red!
Yesterday I was only able to ride 8 miles, today I made it to almost 16 before my neck started hurting, yayyy! Signs of improvement. That was the best and longest ride since my injury and I will take it.
So now it is time to head to the gym and the hot tub. I was going to do some strength work, but am having a few muscle spasms from the ride. The hot tub should help.

Okay.
Just cuz I'm sure you want to see a 6.5 minute video of my butt....
Here I am on my Thanksgiving ride - on Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park, just at the D.C. line. Sections of the park are closed to vehicles on weekends and holidays. Thanksgiving - being a holiday (ahem) - had the road closed (hence the gates) and much foot traffic as folks walked/bike/jogged to justify or wear off their holiday feast.
http://youtu.be/uNvHal4T3r8
Also, a shorter vid of DH coming up from the bottom of the park. It was a pretty section, with the creek right there. I guess the video doesn't really do it justice.

We keep playing with our new helmet cam (soon to be a bar-mounted cam).

Congrats Red!
I did 43 road miles with DH yesterday, dinner with the parents wasn't until 5:30 and we could resist light winds and a 70 degree Texas day. I wore short sleeves, no base layer and shorts. Not bragging, it is comical the silly weather we have. Sure makes up for 70+ 100 degree days this summer.
Today I went to one of my favorite trails for 10 wonderful miles of singletrack. The trails were positively sublime after getting a nice rain Tuesday! They were so dry, dusty and getting damaged from the drought but today it was hardpacked, fast and fun! No sliding in corners, no loose funky descents. It was a great day. The dogs and their people seemed to be loving it to. Saw a beautiful rottweiler, funny little doxie, got herded by a Aussie named Jake, several lovely mutts and some well mannered boxers. I love sharing the trail!:D

Was extremely busy yesterday. Just had enough time to do 8 miles before sunset. But it was good. Also went to the gym in the morning.
Up since 6:15 a.m awaiting for sunrise to go ride early today. As soon as the daylight appears... I am out the door. :D

I did a 20 mile ride yesterday. At this time of year, even though I want to get out in the scarily warm temperatures, I do better with "destination" rides. So, we rode to West Acton, to the coffee shop, and ate a lunch of butternut squash soup, sitting outside. I think the soup might have been a little rich, because my stomach felt a little churned up on the remainder of the ride, but it was really nice out. We did a little extra loop in west Concord, on the way home.
Today, it's supposed to be 65. I really need to do at least 30.

I did my first longer ride in awhile. Just one of my usual local hilly rides, 38.4 miles. It was really nice, as most of the ride is on roads where there are very few cars. I had a late breakfast, so I didn't really eat before I left at around noon. It was kind of a bad idea, as when I got hungry, I was really hungry and we were in the middle of nowhere. So, I pulled out all of my emergency stash of stuff, I got a Luna bar and DH had a pack of nuts and cranberries and a half eaten Luna Bar from some other ride. When we stopped, it was about 64 out and then all of a sudden, it got a little cloudy, we went down a long downhill, and the temperature dropped to 55 at one point. It rose a little but he end of the ride, but at this time of year, it's amazing how fast the sun starts going away.
I passed the 2800 mile mark today. I am thinking that it actually may be possible to get to 3,000 again this year, but it really depends on weather. 200 miles is not a lot for some, but at this time of year, my riding time is a little more limited, especially if it's rained and I can't go out in the early AM because of black ice.

Post-Thanksgiving ride on Friday: 135 miles in 12 1/2 hours (including our planned stops and the not-planned hour spent by the side of a country road in the freezing dark trying to fix a flat that took three tubes, including one being patched, to get moving again) on the tandem with my beloved. Very tired, only slightly sore though. My longest ride so far and I would (probably) do it again ;)

I would say my post Thanksgiving rides were great. I rode Thursday-Saturday, about 75 miles total. Wednesday before Thanksgiving I did a spin class, since it was raining, Tuesday I went to a strength class, and Monday I rode 10 miles at 5:15 AM.
I am tired. I took a day off today and I don't feel badly. We went to the LBS, to pick up the travel cases for our Gurus and there was a man there (a racer, in his early 50s), just slumping in a chair, hanging out. I know this guy is married and has kids, but he appeared to just be spending the day at the LBS. We talked about how warm the weather has been, and he mentioned he had "ridden a little bit more than he usually does, about 70 miles a day, since Thanksgiving." I don't begrudge him the miles, but, geez, I just wonder why he was spending the day, slumped in a chair at the bike shop, instead of doing something fun with his family.
Going to do another short ride at 5:15 tomorrow.

I know a lot of men, and some women, who do this. If he races, he can probably do 70 miles in 3-4 hours, so it's not like it takes all day. As for hanging out at the bike shop, perhaps his wife and kids were out shopping. The truth is even when somebody is home with their family, the kids are liable to be in front of a computer or on their cells. Family time often doesn't exist.

I know a 70 mile ride doesn't take a guy like that much time. But, it was late in the afternoon, and it was clear he had been there for hours. And, it's not the first time I have observed this. I am well aware of the commitment that racers make, as I have had 2 in my family.
I guess I'm very old fashioned.
