View Full Version : Where you work
I've commented on occasion how much I dislike my office space, it's a crappy box inside a bigger box, crammed into the back of the stacks. My desk is in the back, if I want to see sunlight I have to log on to a webcam. *sigh*

I can't post a picture of where I work (federal concerns over security and all that), but my office, while nicely appointed, is windowless. Come late winter, I usually fall into a sunlight deprived funk. Within "chambers" we have several distinct offices, plus a courtroom, kitchen, and conference room, but they're all locked together behind closed and monitored doors. Because of that, we have little incidental contact with other offices or coworkers. It can get lonely. Right now, we're in a temporary space while they do maintenance work to our aged internal systems. For the next couple of months, I get to enjoy an office with a window. It's awesome.

I feel for you, I had an office with a window that looked out onto an air shaft for about four months, it was awesome!!

I have a very large space to work in, until you add 32 other bodies and their back packs. Lots of windows, which is nice. But I don't get to control the heat or air conditioning and the room is always too warm.
I was on a committee for the building of another new school in our district. The architect insisted on only putting in 28 desks in the plans. I kept telling him he needed 36. Yes, we can have 36 students.

My current window overlooks the roof, which is supposed to be made "green" next spring when they plant grass on it. I'll be gone by then though. :(
Whoever designed our regular office should be shot. They put the kitchen and conference rooms along our bank of windows. Well, who the heck cares whether those rooms get natural light? Meanwhile, my office and our main receptions area--where the judge's AA has her workspace, are windowless. Wow; that makes sense. Grrrr.

Don't even get me started on our heating and cooling. Each has a mind of its own. Right now, freezing cold air is blowing on me, despite the fact that my alleged-to-be-a-thermostat-but-I-actually-think-it's-just-wall-art is set at 71 degrees. The other day, however, our office was 103 degrees. I kid you not. It was miserable.

I work from home in a small space in our basement, about 5' x 5'. It's so much preferable to my office space on campus--which really isn't that bad. But I'm not used to so much fluorescent lighting. Every time I have to go in I get a terrible migraine. I don't know if its from the lighting or poor air circulation/venting. It's completely miserable.

The university is run on steam power, so they turn it on annually based on the calendar rather than the outside temp. October 1st the temp was in the 70's... and they fired up the heat.
They'll do the reverse in April, even if it's freezing cold out. Good times.

Here's the "space" adjacent to my home office desk: https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/313897_2455462382889_1141968526_2918737_1801379063_n.jpg
It can be hard to move around in here. The carpet really isn't as dirty as the lighting makes it seem.
Most of my actual "work" takes place in courthouses, other attorneys offices and conference rooms.

My coworkers wonder why I prefer to do most of my work at home. Home computer is faster, I have kitties to play with, I can be in my comfy clothes and drink coffee or hot chocolate while I work and not have to walk halfway across campus to use the bathroom. :D

When I worked in marketing in the '90s, I always had my own office with a window.
In my first software development job, I shared an office with another person. He was a nice guy.
Then I took a job at Discovery Communications. They had a long desk running the length of the entire wall, with dividers a few inches high to delineate each person's workspace. The guy next to me went out partying every night and reeked like cigarettes and liquor every morning. When he went to Chipotle for lunch, he farted at his desk all afternoon.
I was laid off from that job (along with almost all the other developers) after a few months. I interviewed for a new job and got the offer, but it would have required me to be one of many people working in a windowlessroom. I really really did not want that job, because of the lack of windows.
Fortunately I was soon offered a different job, which is where I still work. It's a big cube farm, but at least we have windows. There's no privacy -- most people go out in the hallway if they need to make a personal phone call. Many of us eat lunch at our desks. My current cube neighbor tends to eat food that smells nasty, and sometimes the air is so filled with a hot spice that it makes my eyes burn. Several of our coworkers come to her desk for lunch. Even when my neighbor is out of the office, these coworkers still sometimes have lunch at her desk. It drives me nuts.
Fortunately we have flexible hours, so my boss lets me work from home most mornings in order to avoid the lunch stink.
A couple of summers ago, several of my coworkers thought it would be a good idea to bring their young children to work with them on a regular basis. It was an incredible distraction, for the parent as well as everyone working around them. Fortunately the project manager put a stop to it.
Oh, don't get me started on the kitchen and bathroom mess. These people are slobs. They spill coffee all over the counter and then just walk away as if their mother was going to come and clean up after them.
I like the work I do, but I hate the cube farm. Whoever invented the concept should be forced to spend eternity in one.

In a 10 x 10 cube, center of a former factory building - autos, then WWII bomb plant. There are sky lights, currently hidden by a still high false ceiling. But it's a cube farm like no other I've ever seen, the building is 1/8th mile long. My cube is pretty close to the center of the building - but thanks to a previous occupant, I have a lovely kite afixed to the ceiling over my cube.

Bwahahaha! You should have seen it last week, couldn't walk into the freakin room with all the paper and junk strewn about. I had to replace my computer, and the level of filth I encountered finally exceeded my tolerance.
I took that photo in part to document the rare occurrence of a visible desktop. :p

If I remember correctly, if you loose your internet connection, then you loose the ability to make outside calls. The fun part is when you don't know you've lost internet connections.

Oh, I guess I will have to bring my camera to work; I work in a really overcrowded papered and box filled office (share with my crazy boss), but the view from my wonderful winder is awesome (snow covered mountain peaks!) The only bad thing is that the window sash goes right across the window so unless I stand up or sit up real tall, I can't really see the view too well.
I promise I'll send a pic when I find my camera.

Sharing a public bathroom with other coworkers is interesting. Thankfully, it's kept very clean, but you do get to see some interesting bathroom habits. I work with someone--I haven't figured out who it is--who uses half a roll of toilet paper to line the toilet seat every time she goes to the bathroom. She then throws the other half of the roll away when she's done. Nevermind that there are seat covers that one can use and I don't understand why she throws the unused roll of toilet paper away. Weird and wasteful, no?

Most of my work is done at my client's homes. My actual office is in an old mill building; no windows. No one shuts their door here because of this, unless it's super confidential. We don't even have our own computers; human service agencies are cheap. I do all of my paperwork at home and email it to myself at work to save on the server. Oh, and I share my office with a slob who smells. I usually only am there at the same time as her one day a week. The office itself is OK, but I am only here 1-2 days a wk.

I can see Red Rocks from my office window :)
The building across the parking lot used to be a gym and we would make fun of the people in there all day. Not because they were working out, or any good reason, just because their whole building is a wall of windows and it was the most entertaining thing outside. We had made-up names and lives for everyone and knew all of the regulars gym habits - "Oh, Murano's here, how long will she be here today? 17 minutes! 21 minutes! etc." "I bet she skips elliptical today so I guess 15 minutes!"
It's vacant now. But I've vowed never to have a gym membership at a fishbowl gym :)

Here's my office, complete with the very nice view. We are moving to the new and improved building in 2 weeks - where I will have 1/4 of a glassed in office with a view of the wall of the other side of the building. WooHoo- progress!
Not looking forward to it. Except, bike parking is improved and it's 1 mile closer to home. Bad news is, I'll have to ride in 100% on roads and no longer have the beautiful bike trail along the river (which this current office overlooks).
(and yes, I have a soda addiction, I'm working on it - only allowed 2 that size/week and 1 12 oz the other days)

those are soft star shoes. I wear them almost exclusively (won't wear them for messy yard work or bicycling). My daughter in law has a pair and now my son who hates shoes has a pair too.
I love them. They are fun, they are comfy.
They are MADE IN OREGON and cost less than 100 bucks and you can pick your own colors.

Well I get my assignments and report my work at home. Laptop is at the moment on the table. (Not sure if that will be the permanent home or not). Fax machine is in the guest bedroom, and yes I actually do have to fax some paper work. All my work is actually done in stores anything from retail stores, to grocery store, to drug stores, to gas stations.

I work at a company with an open floor plan. No cubes. No offices. But lots of dogs and a full bar.
Below: 1) the bar, 2) the corner of one of my screens and the window I face from my desk, 3) the reflection of the Space Needle in another of my screens from the window behind my desk, 4) the kind of stuff you're likely to find on my desk.

Weird bathroom habits abound where I work. There is someone that takes the paper seat liner, balls it up, and stuffs it behind the pipes of the toilet. WTF? I keep thinking of taking a picture and posting it on the bathroom door, with a "Really?"

Pretty plain and boring. I do have a little meeting table for group huddles and chats.
My job is very much electronic....which is total contrast to first 10 years of my career as a librarian where I had space for whole collections plus electronic research databases.
My first real librarian job was in a library that backed near a wooded ravine. (it was a medical library).
Another library, our study reading areas overlooked Vancouver's ocean harbour with mountains and seaplanes that took off /landing.
Still another different library my office overlooked into a 19th century bricked courtyard. It was in a historic courthouse that was the seat of law in Ontario in 1800's. So stained glass windows in eating area, etc. So I had elegant leather chairs with pseudo curved arm rests, etc. But TOTALLY impractical for computer work.
I rarely have brought along much of any personal posessions for the offices I've worked in. Just lazy I guess. I dunno. My present job is not in a library at all. Oh yes, boss insisted on 2 screens to look at document simultaneously. Laptop is my keyboard.....I have not taken my work laptop home yet.
Actually not having windows is not a huge deal for me. I found myself not really paying attention to the weather even when I did have an office that had a window. What matters to me, are cooperative employees around me and some quiet...which unfortunately my boss has a voice/personality that you can hear. We are in open office concept.
Annoys us all on the floor where other floors have offices with walls, nicer carpeting, etc. Our division was created as a merger of 2 and with that, a whole floor reno, that was cheaper and squashing people closer together.

Gosh - I feel very fortunate to have a pretty nice office, 2 windows, and the view is not bad. I'll have to bring my camera to work on Monday and take a pic. There are only 6 of us in-house, and 4 of them are probably out more than they are in, so it's usually very quiet.
The kitchen is always a mess though, and while I can't be 100% sure, I never hear any water running after some people use the bathroom. I know, WAY too much information. Funny how they are the ones that seem to get the most colds.

I reported to a very dynamic senior manager who had great ideas and was good in steering lots of people towards working those ideas become true.
He had a hole in the wall, with a desk area that looked even plainer than mine.
I think his world was in his head, his visions in himself, the inspiration drawn from within this dreams and he never cared much for his own "look" of his corner. He was too busy running around elsewhere...
