View Full Version : Scary and Bizarre ride home this evening

The scariest thing happened on my commute home this evening, it's only beginning to set in what happened as I lay in bed trying to go to sleep. As I replay the events in my mind it goes something like this. It was SUPER windy tonight, like 23 MPH wind with 45 MPH gusts. It's dark out, I have my lights on and I come up to and intersection on my bike. I see a large dark colored SUV has its right turn signal on so I stay back to they can go ahead and turn... they do. After they turn I pull my bike up towards to front, there was a car immediately to my left and another one in the turn lane turning left. The light turns, I go. The wind is whipping me as I go through the intersection, I then hear 4 consecutive "crack, crack, crack, crack's". I felt something hit me on my back after about the 3rd 'crack' and wondered what the hell had just hit me!!! I thought it was odd in hindsight that I crossed the intersection first, no cars went whizzing around me like normal. So I get through the intersections ride a few more yards and stop because something had definitely hit me very hard. I stop and check myself out and notice my back on my left side was hurting but it didn't seem like anything major. I assumed a tree limb at that point. As I was stopped I glanced back and saw the same car in the turn lane finally turning and the one that was next to me finally going again. I keep thinking about all this now and I am pretty sure I got grazed by a stray bullet somehow?!?!?! There were no trees around that intersection that could have dropped a limb big enough to hit me hard enough to take a tiny little chunk out of my back. I have a little circular, bloody divet in my back right now and it's sore all the way around it. Oddly my thermal jersey didn't seem torn at all? I can't figure out what could have been in the wind that I wouldn't have seen go flying past me after it hit me if it was anything sizable??? What I think is that those two cars were having some kind of fight and bullets were shot and I caught one of the ricocheting strays and it was just enough to break the skin. It's the only thing I can figure?:eek::eek::eek:

Wow, that's freaky.
I guess if you called the cops they could tell you if there was a shooting. But then you might spend the evening talking to them, which sounds like a pain.
Glad you are ok!

Maybe it was an air pistol? They shoot tiny metal slugs. I'm glad you are not hurt badly or ended up falling because of this.

(((WindingRoad))) That is so scary it's nauseating. I think you should get checked out to make sure there's nothing inside of you, just in case.
What a world we live in.
Peace. Please.

OMG, WR! That is insane. I agree with Red that you should get checked out. I think you should report it to the police, too. If nothing else, they can beef up patrols in the area. Where in the city were you?

WR, I'm so glad you are ok. I agree with the others, go to the doctors and have them check you out to be certain everything is ok.
Was there damage to your clothing? If so, maybe the police can tell if it was some kind of bullet or something that hit you. And yes, a police report would be good.
What about taking pictures of your clothing and injury as part of your documentation? You don't have to show them unless you want to or need to. But down the road if something comes up and you need additional documentation, these could be helpful.
Feel better soon.

Oh my goodness, how frightening! I concur, police report and check it out with a Dr. That is far too close of a call, thank God you are ok.
Winding Road: That sounds very scary. I agree with Red, have it checked out with a doctor and, depending on what the dr says (I assume a dr will reconize a bullet wound), file a report with the police. The one odd detail you mention is that your jersey was not torn.

The really strange thing is I don't have a hole in my jersey??? I have a hole in my skin and it's really puffing up around that hole this morning. I heard from a fellow rider this morning that he saw the cops stopped VERY near to where I had my 'incident' last night.
Indy - 62nd and Moller - not the best neighborhood but certainly not the worst either
I've had my BF check it for me, he's a PT so he knows what wounds are supposed to do when they are clean.
Air pistol? Hmmmmmm, I'll have to look into that. A metal something had to hit me. I'm guessing it must have hit me square on in order NOT to tear up my jersey? All I know is it hit harder than anything I've ever experience. I've been shot with pellet and BB guns too. It kind of stunned me. If it was a bullet it must have bounced off something else first or I'd be in the hospital. I still think those two cars were arguing or something and some idiot pulled out a gun and shot. There are so many stupid people, sometimes I forget just how many :(

Thats really scary....Glad you OK
I think in this one, I would trust an ER physician more than a regular primary care doctor. Please see one and take the stuff you were wearing with you.

I had to read it several times because it just seems so unreal. PLease see an ER doctor have them check it out, and file a police report even if you are not 100% sure like everyone else says.

Please go to the doctor sooner rather than later, just to be safe. It is wild that it didn't put a hole in your jersey, and you had several layers on your upper body when I saw you last night.

Would a BB be able to pass through the mesh of your thermal jersey and not leave a hole?
What did the doctor say? The police?
Gee whiz, how frightening. I'm glad you had the presence of mind to continue riding home.

HOLY SMOKES!!!:eek: Did I read that right? I can't believe it (not that I don't believe you, just that I don't believe it could happen). WOW! I will say what all the others have: go to the ER, and then file a report if it appears to be a gunshot wound of some kind. Holy moly- glad you're OK!
