Cotton flannel. It's especially nice for not getting that icy feeling when it's cold, but it's plenty cool in hot weather, too.

(Read about cotton farming and consider buying organic...)

+1 to flannel sheets in the winter. (I do find them too hot in the summer though...). Love getting into bed and the sheets are not icy cold.

I am one that cannot stand the texture of flannel sheets after a couple of washes. A couple of years ago I got bamboo sheets from the Company Store (http://www.thecompanystore.com/Bamboo/Cotton-300-thread-count-Bedding-%2830%25-Off%29/EY98x_04,default,pd.html?start=4&q=bamboo) in Wisconsin. I really like them -- they are very soft and smooth.

Love our flannel sheets! They are a must 3-seasons out of the year. So cozy and comforting.

Not cheap ones though. I usually go to Macys.com and look for sales. I have the added pain of needing super deep pockets.

I can only sleep in super stiff sheets. I like them to feel crisp and cool, even in the winter. None of those flannel or t-shirt or super soft sheets for me. The stiffer the better. I had been using some sheets my grandma gave me that she bought in Singapore in 1960. They were awesome. But I got a bigger bed and a deep mattress. Now I just have whatever was cheapest at Bed Bath and Beyond in the color I wanted.

I really wanted some flannel sheets and just bought some at Fred Meyer because they were on sale. Big mistake. They feel like cardboard, not the soft flannel I was expecting. Major disappointment.

I need super deep pockets, too. Is there a brand you've found that works well? I've really struggled to find them myself. I have some Stearns & Foster sheets that fit, but luxurious they are not.

+1 on flannel as the temps get cooler. We always get ours from LL Bean.

How much money ya got?
I looked all over the web, had a cardiac looking at prices. and did find what I wanted by cruising the Macy's sales for flannels. I will have to look and see what brand they are. The flannels I did get fit a little better than barely, but it's still not a super great fit. But at least the corners don't pop off. Standard deep pocket sheets barely fit our mattress, and super deep pocket sheets can be spendy.

For regular percale, the sheets they sell at Costco have been great. I wish they made a flannel in the same line.

The sheets we have now cost $160 at Bed Bath & Beyond (and it makes me a little sick to my stomach to type that). If memory serves, we used a coupon. I just want one other set, and I don't honestly care whether they're flannel. I just get sick of having to wash the same set of sheets week after week.

LL Bean's flannels have 15" deep pockets. Is your mattress thicker than that?

Yep. Last I measured, I think ours measure 19". There are multiple reasons I hate our mattress, but sheet buying is near the top of the list.

Yes, standard deep pocket sheets ( 13"-15" or so) barely fit.I haven't tried Beans, but I've tried a lot of others.

Now, other than the flannel sheet issue, I absolutely love our bed but I wish I had been warned about the sheets.

Wow, 19"?!! Almost sounds like you need custom sheets!

I'm going to keep your experience in mind, the next time I go mattress shopping! Probably not an issue for us, DH hates those pillow-top style mattresses.

We have a couple of sets of Hotel Collection sheets from Macy's. I don't know exactly which version they are though. They were a gift from my mom at Christmas last year and they are wonderful. They are super crisp, but soft and they are holding up beautifully. Super deep pockets, too. They were actually too deep for our old mattress, but they are perfect for our new one (which is so thick, we opted for a thinner box-spring...so it's big!). I can look at the label tonight to see which ones we have, if you want.

It looks like all the Hotel Collection are on sale right now at Macy's.

I despise flannel sheets, so I can't help there. ;)

So long as the Stearns & Fosters fit our pillow top, I won't go with custom. I shudder to think how much they would cost. My pre-marriage queen sized mattress is a Eurotop. It also needs deep pockets, but more in the 15" range. I haven't had too many problems finding sheets for it.

Wow I never knew that flannel sheets could incite such strong emotions!!:D We tell the turning of the seasons by which sheets we put on the bed, and whether DH has a beard or not.

Our DS has bamboo sheets on his bed that we got from Target. I LOVE them. I need to get a set for DH and I. To me they feel like a cross between satin and t-shirt knit sheets. So soft. We currently have flannel sheets, but they do get sorta rough after a while. The bamboo are just as soft now as they were brand new.

I love flannel sheets, but my husband can't sleep with them because they are too hot for him. So basically at this point it's just buying 300 or higher thread count sheets.

Indysteel: Look at the "extra deep (http://www.thecompanystore.com/Extra-Deep/sheets-extra-deep,default,sc.html)" sheets from the Company Store... they fit up to 20".

Disclaimer: Just in case you wonder, I am not affiliated to that store, but I have stuff from them.

Flannel. Always flannel. Winter, spring, summer, fall.

I get mine in sets at Costco. $40 or so per set. Each set lasts about 10 years, maybe 15 years, so I rarely need to replace them... I just want new colors and buy more! :p

Only flannel sheets I've bought balled up on me and were itchy but they were cheap and poorly made.

High thread count doesn't necessarily mean quality. It just tells you how many threads are in a square inch. The higher the thread count, the stiffer the sheet because of that many threads in the square inch. If you like crisper sheets, those are the ones to look for.

What kind of thread and how it's made is what makes the sheets quality ones. Look for what kind of cotton is on the package and that will help. Egyptian Cotton is among the best. Most are a polyester/cotton mix though. Polyester adds stability as cotton has long or short fibers to make the thread. Short fibers fall apart easily so look for long staple cotton.

Bamboo sheets sound amazing. I'll have to look into them.

I don't know about the microfiber sheets. Those sound wonderful as well.

Didn't plan on giving a science lesson, but I hope it helps when you look at the package.

I bought their bamboo/cotton sheets and love them; I also have a down comforter (of their "legends" collection) that is fabulous, and gave some of their pillows as gifts. The bamboo sheets are not available in extra deep, but their quality is very good. Read the overview section on each product -- it will tell you the maximum depth they fit. The 350 and 450 thread count ones it up to 20". Others are described as 17", 18"...

ETA: It seems their list is incomplete. Because of this thread, I started checking sheets again (it's good to have more sets in the rotation) and was liking one (http://www.thecompanystore.com/Charisma%C2%AE-Lexington-Dot-Bedding/E4T5-ps,default,pd.html) until I saw the depth: 20" (I have a futton-style mattress...). Guess if I was you, I'd chat with the customer support.

Wow I did not expect so many answer's and coversations on sheets when I got in tonight. Now here is mu comments back. Sorry if I leave anyone out.
I am not a hige flannel fan though in the winter I put a flat flannel sheet between my reg bed flat sheet and a thick blanket. It adds just enough warmth. But my husband sleeps hot so having flannel sheets does not work for him. I wish we could have them but he sweats. Bad! I thought he peed the bed the first time we slept together. Ha! That was funny. I just went back to sleep cause I was to tired to deal with it. Then sniffed the sheet's the next day and then scratched my head. Then realized he is a sweater every time he forst falls asleep.
So anyway.....my flannel flat sheet is an LL Bean, bought it as a seperate. It has Really stood the test of time. I would buy a set if I could.
Thinking target sheet's. Have 2 set's right now but one is getting super old and the other is soft but not that soft and don't fit well. Deep pockets here too. I think I am going to try these hotel sheets. They were REALLY soft! And cozy but not the flannel hot cozy. If anyone wants the site let me know.

We registered for these for our wedding and yes, they are spendy but they are some of the nicest sheets I've ever had. They are nice quality thickness and have held up well for nearly continuous use for 15 months. I hate the other set we have so these get washed and used every week. I would love another set but I'm not sure I can bring myself to spend $140 on another set.

My set that is falling apart are this brand. I have to say I have had them forever and washed them a million times. The elastic is getting crunchy. Maybe I should get another set of those.......so many choices.

High thread count - 300+ is definitely worth it.

As for the penchant for having thick matresses these days... when I replaced my old matress, the salesman said to buy sheets one size up. I have a double bed (it was my grandparent's) so I buy queen sized sheets. That is if I can't find deep pocket double (standard) bed sheets. And sometimes the regular pocket queen is less expensive than deep pocket double. I suppose if you have a deep pocket king you're stuck.

I'm a flannel sheet person too. However, if you find them too hot, cotton jersey is also a good option. I think I bought my cotton jersey sheets from Target. They are soft like flannel but without the heat - just order a size up!

Pilling doesn't indicate poor quality, according to this vendor (http://www.rawganique.com/Bedsheetsblankets.htm#AH-flannel) of organic USA-made bed linens:

Note on flannel: we do not use acids to strip off extra lint and so your organic flannel sheets will pill in the first few washings. This pilling stabilizes after a time. It's the nature of untreated flannel fabric (we do not use formaldehyde or other chemicals to "finish" the fabric, preferring instead to let time do it gracefully). If you are particular about pilling, then untreated organic flannel sheets probably aren't right for you.

I haven't dealt with Rawganique so take that fwiw, but I do know a LOT of formaldehyde and other toxic chemicals are used in the textile industry. I prefer knowing how a desirable quality is reached, so I can at least make a decision about whether it's worth it or not. (And if anyone does wind up ordering from them, post your experience please!)

My favorite sheets ever were 100% linen and from the Ukraine about 15 years ago. When they got a grip on their economy, I could no longer afford another set.

We have some high thread count ones from BBB now. They are nice and seem to be lasting forever.

Just got a warming mattress pad because our new old house isn't quite as insulated as it might be.

I like the cotton jersey sheets too. I am pretty particular about my sheets. In the summer I have a set that sound like the "hotel" collection--they are super crisp and almost silky. I love those in the hot summer months. In the fall and spring I rotate between the jersey cotton and the flannel.

Seriously going to check target out. Last time I bought a set from Costco within a year the were stretched out and within 2 the elastic went bad. And they were too big so there was all this extra sheet!

I LOVE nice sheets. And my current favorites are "affordable" - thick, cottony and well made - from Target! they are the "Fieldcrest Luxury" sheets. My mattress is about 19 inches deep or a bit more, and they do fit. And the flat sheet is made wide enough for the deep mattress too. I highly recommend them - I have spent much more for sheets, and nothing has come close to these! They have a very soft feel on my skin, and are not thin or crispy feeling. Love, love, love them!
