Next two months of our weight management challenge!
Let me know
(1) if you want to join in
(2) what your weight is on Friday the 4th of November (or whatever day works best for you)
(3) what your goal weight is for the 30th of December - if you want to, if you don't want to set a goal like that, then no worries.
I'll post the link to the chart later in the week.

Count me in, I will be out of town for the rest of the week so my official 'weigh in' is 138.6. Goal is 132.
I think I've fallen into a trap these past months. With one injury or another, and work being so busy, my level of cardiovascular exercise has dropped. I've certainly still been riding but not at the same level of intensity. My age is working against me here, and I suspect my metabolism has slowed somewhat and I need to give it a boost.
Time to turn the burners back on for my metabolism. My diet isn't bad at all, though I am tweaking my carb intake and pulling back on the beer for a time. I only have about 3 a week, but one a week will do for now. While I require a high protein diet to keep my blood sugar stable, I suspect that I've been taking in too much for my activity level - too much protein gets stored as fat.
Regardless of the reason for the gain I need to stop this upwards trend NOW or I know what will happen. I am fooling myself by thinking it is fluid retention.

I'd like to participate. :) I've recently reached my goal weight after having lost a little over 200lbs and could use some camaraderie while I work on maintaining through the colder months (so more gym time, less bike trail) and holidays. I'm playing with some dietary tweaks (finding the common ground between 2 ways of eating that seem divergent but equally appeal to me-paleo/primal and DrFuhrman's ways) so accountability will be a good thing.

I'll join...I have been changing my eating habits and instead of eating out for lunch at work been bringing my food from home. Been going to the gym on a regular basis for the past 3 months or so...not really dieting but trying to eat more proportional and healthier and trying not to eat after 7 p.m. if I am hungry at night I eat something like a fruit or a healthy cereal with soy milk. Since then I have lost 17 lbs ...my goal is to drop 15lbs or more if possible by the end of December. A few years ago I went on a strict healthy diet and extremely excersise routine by myself and lost 70lbs in 8 months. I was able to wear petite sizes. Stopped going to the gym got depressed because of some personals...and slowly gained them back. I still have all that clothes hanging in my closet and I am planning on wearing all of it again.....:) so let's do it...!!

2. Let's just use today's weight for Weight Watchers - 145
3. Goal - 135 (this is my ultimate goal after reaching a high of 173 last summer).
I am about to start racing marathon (usually 50 mile races on mountain bike courses) but my biggest challenge of my life is the January 7 Excrutiation Exam which starts at one mountain bike course, does the 9 mile loop there, rides the road to another course, does approximately 20 miles there and then rides the road bike for a grand total of 80-90 miles depending on the year.

Still trying to get back to my elusive goal weight - my real goal is 112 but just put me down for 114 because that seems realistic.
By the way, NPR had an interesting story this morning (Oct 31) on Morning Edition about why it is harder to keep weight off and lose it again a second time. It involves a lot of biochemical messages (leptin and other substances) that make your body think it is starving, and then reducing your metabolism so you actually must eat fewer calories than a person who is at the same weight, but did not have to diet to get to that weight. And how you need to do an hour of activity or so, at least 6 days a week, to maintain. The deck is really stacked against us!

My goal is (still) 140.
I woke up this morning with a pain in my left foot and no idea why it hurts. I'm hoping it's a minor muscle pull. Otherwise it will really mess with my ability to exercise.

I decided it isn't enough that I can't do any working out due to a back/leg thing, so I added in a slip and fall in the tub that may possibly have done something to a rib.

My weight last Friday was 112 but today it was 114. I thought the 112 it was a blip. Either way, I am wanting to now maintain my weight. I've been losing weight since the end of December of last year. Ten months, 45 pounds. Thirty percent of my initial weight. I am now in the normal range. But I want to join the challenge because I have the toughest challenge ahead, not regaining the weight I lost. This challenge will continue for the rest of my life.
I really enjoy being thinner than I have since the mid 1980s. I enjoy the increased energy. Looking and feeling better. Being able to ride 50 miles on a bike rather than 2 miles. Being able to walk indefinitely. But for some reason I have a bit of depression, or maybe it is anxiety, about the weight loss. Now I am here. How in the world am I going to stay here?
Also, my weight loss was not a "cure" for health conditions I have. My blood pressure is still high enough to require drugs. My cholesterol still requires drugs and is unchanged. I still have sleep apnea. These things did not magically go away and I am kind of bummed about it.
Sorry for feeling sorry for myself today. :o I know that I am extraordinarily lucky. Lucky to be retired early and have the time to work on my fitness.
I remain obsessed with food. I probably should be.
My goal weight for the challenge is 112, a maintenance goal. I left for a trip so I'll use 114 as my weigh in weight.

Agreed! It was well worth the splurge and I don't even care if I gained a little from it. I don't often (um ever) go out to a 2 Michelin star restaurant - I think there are only a couple in the Bay Area. A four hour dinner is truly extravagant. And we didn't even do the wine pairing!
I truly believe that it's got to be a lifestyle and not a diet and any lifestyle that doesn't make room for the daily beer and very occasional over the top splurge just isn't sustainable for me. I can generally fit those indulgences in and continue to maintain or lose, in general.

Goldfinch, perhaps you are thinking about how tough maintaining your weight loss is going to be. With all of the negativity around about how hard it is to live a healthy lifestyle, sometimes we feel like we are the only ones with this goal.
As for your other concern, while losing weight does help with the health issues you talked about, it is not a cure. My DH takes bp medication, has 2 stents, and also takes 2 cholesterol lowering drugs, and a blood thinner. He rides 2-3K miles a year and is thin. He looks like a very fit, healthy person. Genetics plays a large part in this. Perhaps you should look at it from the point of view that if you hadn't lost the weight, these conditions would be worse.

Goldfinch, I'm in the exact same place. My weight has stabilized at 143-145 (I'm 5'11") after years spent working on weight loss (started at around 350lbs). I've been this weight since July and I'm scared to death to loosen the reins. I still weigh myself daily. I still count calories and weigh/measure everything I eat. I've worked so hard to accomplish this and the fear I could gain it all back easily is huge.

Thank you for posting this article! It's very validating for me to read that it's normal to not be able to eat as many calories as everyone thinks I can after having lost a large amount of weight. Being tall (5'11") the assumption is that I should be able to eat around 2000 calories a day since I'm active. The reality is that I maintain with 1300-1400 per day (a little more if I ride long) so I have to be careful despite the expectation that I should lighten up now that I'm not working to lose.

I have read a lot of research on weight loss. I lost the rose colored glasses about keeping it off a while ago. My goal is to make it a year and get on the national weight control registry. http://xnet.kp.org/permanentejournal/sum03/registry.html . And then make it two years. It does sound like once you make it two years your odds of continuing to keep it off improve. Exercise also is key.
Goldfinch, perhaps you are thinking about how tough maintaining your weight loss is going to be. With all of the negativity around about how hard it is to live a healthy lifestyle, sometimes we feel like we are the only ones with this goal.

I know my genes are not on my side. I still had really hoped that at least the sleep apnea would be resolved and now I am learning to live with the fact that I am a CPAP lifer. It is a bit difficult to take.
My mother died at 39 of a heart attack. My dad's first heart attack was in his early 40s. He died at 63 after multiple heart attacks. I know that I am better off with less weight so that helps with motivation. But the real problem is that motivation can be strong but so can the drive to eat. Hormones are not necessarily our friends. There is some research that indicates that after losing weight levels of leptin remain abnormally low (an appetite suppressant) and levels of hormones that stimulate appetite are abnormally high. But I think knowing that, though a bit depressing, can help because I know that I have to be extra alert to any slip in maintaining weight. I have to catch it right away and jump on the issue. I have to exercise. And at the same time I have to not beat myself up for imperfections. :)

I think almost all adults who are trying to maintain a healthy weight/lifestyle need to keep track of and limit the amount of food they eat, even if they have never gained and then lost excess weight. Some might do it more casually, rather than weighing and measuring, and they might be able to get away with treats more often, but they're still doing it. And then there are people like the always-thin guy in my office who doesn't gain weight easily, but has to watch his diet due to hereditary health issues (high blood pressure in his case).
And btw, congratulations on losing 200 lbs. That's a huge achievement.

I think it is substantially different for the obese and formerly obese than for those who are not. I think one difference is the huge drive to eat that the formerly obese have. Our bodies and their brains say feed me right now. Resistance is far more demanding than simply watching what you eat. It is driving yourself to exercise more than others may have to exercise. It is being obsessed with what you eat. It is catching yourself immediately if weight goes up the least little bit because once it starts up significantly odds are it will not stop. For many if not most it is living with not eating what your body says is enough for the rest of your life.
"The greater the weight loss, the greater the hunger and, sooner or later for most dieters, a primal hunger trumps the conscious desire to be thin.”
"Obesity is not a personal failing. In trying to lose weight, the obese are fighting a difficult battle. It is a battle against biology, a battle that only the intrepid take on and one in which only a few prevail.” Jeffrey Friedman, A War on Obesity, Not the Obese. [Science. 2003] – PubMed – NCBI.
Years ago I was pregnant and my hormones went out of whack. I couldn't eat a thing as I would just throw it up. I threw up many times a day for a couple of months. I dramatically lost weight. I had to be fed intervenously. When I recovered I was hungry. I was hungry for years. I was never, ever full. And I gained weight. I know the power of hormones.

No disrespect intended at all toward those who have not had to battle obesity. I agree that it's work (both mental and physical) for all who aspire to live a healthy lifestyle.
I think it's a different struggle to some degree, but not necessarily a more difficult struggle...just different. And of course, ask 10 people which mountain is the highest and they'll always tell you it's the one they have to climb. :)
I can't tell you how many people have asked me to give an example of what I eat in a day as they'd like to lose 10-30lbs. When I tell them their eyes instantly glaze over. It's such a huge departure from what is considered "normal" by American standards that it seems like too much effort to be worth it for 10-30lbs. But from where I started (nearly bedridden due to all the medical issues that were both a cause and symptom of my weight issue) it was a no brainer...eating in such an extreme way is a small price to pay for getting my life back.
I'm married to that guy who has to make an effort to eat enough or else he accidentally loses weight.
And thank you! :) I've really emphasized focusing on one day at a time so it's still really surreal when I allow myself to look at the big picture. In a good way though!

Granted, as I am spending all day at the hospital with my family I am not exercising nor eating properly but am trying my best to have a good breakfast and to keep healthy snacks with me - and starting the day with a brisk 30 minute walk. NOT the level of exercisemy body is used to but things will get back to normal next week.
Danielle - congratulations on your 200 lb loss, amazing! It was hard enough for me to lose 60 pounds, 200 is a great acccomplishment! IMO, and your post bears it out, the real battle in the struggle in weight loss is mental. There has to be the intention and then the will to carry it out.

My overall goal remains 200.
This week I rode over 60 miles and took a step class. I also ate pretty well, minus a few pieces of Halloween candy. I walked away from the sourdough and French bread, but the peanut M&Ms got me.
I've had two people give me lectures on what I should eat, one of whom I stopped mid-sentence.
I've also had two different people suggest I just stop obsessing over losing weight and accept that I'm fat and move on. One of them is my therapist.

I have to be honest and say, no, I don't record everything. I have in the past, using Lose It and My Fitness Pal. I lost weight using Lose It, but not with My Fitness Pal.
I hatehatehate having to record everything. The one thing I like about South Beach is that there's no measuring or weighing, but I didn't lose any weight on it.
I read a long time ago about a woman who started a physical food diary and as she progressed through day by day recording every meal, her cooking became more elaborate and her decorations of the daily meals turned into photographs and full recipes...she said her diet became better and better because she was devoting so much creative energy to make it beautiful in the journal. Maybe I'll try that.

I am in. The last several months have been really hard. It meant a lot to me to have the members of this forum be so supportive and caring while my sister was ill. She passed away October 15th, and I stress ate everything in sight and cut way back on my exercise during this time. I am doing a little better now, started exercising more, and am trying to eat healthy food, although I am having trouble getting my sweet tooth back under control. I was 143 on November 4th and I want to be 135 at the end of the year. That will about get me back to where I was last August. Pledge: I stopped logging my food - and pledge to log every bit during this challenge period!

klesko - I'm so sorry about your sister. Your description of your last weeks reminds me of a sort of joke my one sister and I have. After our mother died, then after our sister was diagnosed with lung cancer, we both joked "well we've numbed our pain with food all our lives, why stop now." We both knew that wasn't the way to deal, but it was a hard habit to break. I hope you can find your rhythm again with the eating and exercising. We all know ultimately that makes us feel so much better. But then that chocolate bar calls our name.
Take care of yourself and we are here anytime you need us!

Count me in. I will just say that my goal is to get into a range that is about 10 lbs less than where I am right now. I will still weigh in and report change, if there is any. I've had to back off on the fitness and consequently have developed some pudge (because my brain still thinks I'm running 40+ mpw). Also some hormone stuff going on, which isn't helping. I might find at the end of December that my goal is not possible given my current activity level and (lack of) motivation to change my eating habits, but I need an incentive to at least try. I'm the heaviest I've been in several years.

klesko - I'm so very sorry to hear about your sister. Ditto the big hugs to you!
My starting weight (on Saturday or Friday...I forget which) was 147.1
I've figured out exactly why I've stopped losing weight even though I'm still paleo. Paleo treats are still treats and I'm eating too many of them and they are stalling my loss. What I can't decide, is if I should remove them and keep losing, or stay where I am for a couple more weeks. I'm starting a challenge on another forum in mid-November, so I will DEFINITELY remove them then. What I don't know is if I should start now or wait (so that my before/after contrast is better for that competition). Decisions, decisions....
Roxy - I hate, hate, hate logging food, too. It worked for me the first time I got serious and lost a bunch of weight, but when I eventually gained it back, I just couldn't get motivated to do it again.
I see you struggling with a lot of the same things I struggled with so I'm going to throw this out there because it helped me so much: Would you consider trying paleo? 30-days and you could see huge improvements in your weight loss, but more importantly, in how you approach food (which is why I'm staying on it...the weight loss is just a bonus). I know it seems extreme to some people, but if you were ok with South Beach, this might not seem so far-fetched to you. 30 days isn't a very long time and it might just be the kick in the pants your body needs.
Anyway, I swore that when I started this that I'd not become a paleo-preacher, so I won't sing it's praises again. If you are interested, there are two resources I will suggest. One is the book The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf. It's by far the best intro to paleo eating out there as it explains the science in a non-scientific way AND it's amusing to read. Secondly, I've known lots of people in real life who have had great success following the Whole-30 (http://whole9life.com/2011/06/whole-30-v4/) approach. It's 30 days of strict paleo to kind of 're-set' your body. After the 30-days, you can experiment with the addition of foods to see you react to them.

OK, where was I? Oh, right - weight management.
I had my Weight Watchers weight in this morning, it was a quick in & out because I had a conference call a little bit later.
I weighed in at 155.8
Turns out I reached my 5% milestone! Yay!!
When people reach a milestone (such as a certain % of total body weight lost, or # of pounds lost) it's announced at the meeting and the milestone-ers get some cheers and pats on the back. And maybe a trinket depending on the milestone (I think I get a sticker ...).
Since I couldn't stay for the meeting today, I get my recognition next week.
But ... what if I show up next week and it turns out I gained a bit back ... will they deny me my cheers and my sticker ?
OMG the pressure.

I've had a few medical visits this last week or so, and they insist on weighing me. I normally weigh first thing in the morning, and naked. I know that we gain weight through the course of a day, and of course clothing weighs as well, but 5-6 pounds difference  I know this is normal, but sheesh.
I am just very aware that I've more body fat than a year ago, even though I've not gained all that much weight. While I've a solid diet, I think I need to cut the protein a bit and add more veggies. Too much protein is stored as fat and, frankly, until my neck heals I have to cut back on the intensity of my workouts. Thankfully my thyroid levels are fine, they were just checked :)

I don't disagree with you that unused protein will ultimately get stored as fat, but any excess calorie will do that. Does it matter whether those calories come from protein or carb?

Yesterday's WW weigh in was 153.8
I guess the pressure of wanting to stay under my 5% milestone from last week to this week worked out well for me ...
Wednesday night a crown cracked on a back molar, so I called my dentist first thing yesterday morning. Very lucky for me, he was able to fit me in that very morning.
So, just like last week, I had to do the drive-by weigh in and not stay for the meeting. Turns out, yeah, I managed to stay below that 5% milestone, and on top of that reached another one -- lost a total of 10 pounds so far on WW!
(This was over an 8-week time period; Ten pounds over 8 weeks is certainly no speed record, but WW is intended to be a lifestyle not a diet (uhhh... yeah) and hopefully I'll manage to keep it off)
So now I have two milestones I want to stay under for the next WW meeting. Which won't be for another two weeks, since next Thursday is Thansgiving. Oh boy. :D

I don't disagree with you that unused protein will ultimately get stored as fat, but any excess calorie will do that. Does it matter whether those calories come from protein or carb?
I think it does matter - my diet is pretty restrictive as it is and I keep a close watch on my calories. I typically do not exceed 1,400 calories a day unless it is a long-ride day or other activities that are more intense than what has become my norm. I don't think it is about protein vs carbs, but about the entire nutritional balance.
If my body isn't using the extra protein because of a change in activity level (say I've backed off on weight lifting because of my neck injury) then it would be better to cut back on the protein and replace those calories with something like dark green veggies - nutrient rich/low calories. I need high protein for blood-sugar management, but there is some room to work with there. All of my protein sources are good quality lean sources like skinless chicken and non-fat dairy, along with egg whites and quinoia. My endocrinologist and dietitian both want me to get a from 90-140 grams of protein daily. So it is a balance.
I've been told I would do well to increase my calorie intake, but when I do that I also gain weight, so I am not going to do that :) I am not comfortable with decreasing my caloric intake, even with my injury I am pretty active...

Background: I gained a lot of weight over the past few years (depression + being on lexapro=me not caring about my increasing weight) Used to run but got bursitis a few years ago and have not really tried since (too afraid). That injury is the reason I started riding my bike (did not learn until I was 21-I am 23 now). I have been very inconsistent with riding. Anyway, I started doing a little exercise since Feb and that, along with cutting down some on food, has allowed for some weight loss

Did you miss me?
Last Sunday I was hospitalized with acute pancreatitis and galls stones that required emergency surgery. I was admitted around 2am Sunday morning and then had to wait, NPO, for my pancreas to "cool off" before the surgeons could take out my gall bladder. Painful, but I did it. Surgery was successful. My gall bladder and the stones blocking the pancreatic drainage, which caused the inflammation from hell.
I'm having trouble shaking the fever and I can't go home until I'm 24 hours without a fever. My pancreas is still inflamed, too, so I'm back at NPO.
As of right now, I'm here for two more days, minimum.
I have no idea what my current weight is. I've had less than a thousand calories the whole week - I was on liquids and soft food briefly, then spiked a 103 fever. Now I'm back to NPO.
I can't help wondering if there is some sort of appetite supressant in the IV drip.
Anyone have experience eating for pancreatic recover? Suggestions are welcome.

Good job, Jobob!
Um, for me, it's 142.5. I hesitated to report this as I had a two day stomach bug this week, but the weight has continued to drop even after I returned to eating normally, so maybe, just maybe...it's real. I'll be checking body fat and taking measurements on Sunday, so I'll have a better idea then.

Starting to wonder if my cheap-o target scale is busted and will always read 174. :) Even better, it's been 174.0, exactly, for the last 3 (4?) weeks. I don't trust the tenths of pounds so never really pay attention to them, but now it makes me laugh.
I'll take it though, considering how much stuffing, gravy and potatoes I've eaten this week (staring down another plate for dinner, thanksgiving leftovers may be my favorite food(s) ever :))

I am not doing very well. I'd like to blame it on hormones and stress, but, really, I am just not eating the right foods. Plus I have been traveling a lot (personal and work), which has really messed with my routine and my body. I deserve the nasty blood sugar spikes and bloating. ;)
I didn't have the guts to weigh myself in the last week (well, when I was home, anyway). Maybe tomorrow.

Yes, as of last night. It's good to be home.
I'm tracking my six small meals in Lose It. So far so good. The last time I lost significant weight it was with Lose It. It was also riding a lot, which I can't do. I can't do anything strenuous for at least another week, and even then, I have to go easy, so there won't be any long rides for me for a while. No swimming, either, until my incisions and internal stitches are completely healed.
I can walk slowly around the block.

Hi, I just registered here and I'm happy to be part of the women cycling community. One month ago I started a shredding cycle with a thermogenic fat burner, low carb diet (well, not really strict) and fasted cardio almost every morning+weight lifting 2 times per week. I started at 119 pounds and now I am 111. Some days ago the scales even hit 109.
I am 5'5". Maybe I should stop losing weight because it interferes my work outs. Some days I feel weak and powerless.
I chose to lose weight now because I want to train hard when the season approaches.

I am very unhappy recently because I lost a lot of power :( My trainer said it's temporary and I have to wait until my body adapts to the new weight and I will gain strength again.
Also now I am careful of what I eat because I don't want yo yo which is another obstacle for my quick recovery. I take BCAA but maybe it's not enough.

You lost eight or more pounds in a month and some days "you feel weak and powerless"? At the risk of jumping to conclusions, I'd suggest that you're going way too far with your weight loss. I'm 5'4 and have, as an adult, weighed as little as 111 pounds. I can tell you that I looked extremely thin at that weight; it was not ideal. Even taking different bone structure into consideration, I'd suggest that you're, at best, bordering on being underweight.
Your body (and mind) needs sufficient fuel. The fact that you feel weak and powerless at times should be a wake up call that you're not giving your body what it needs. Simply put: Eat more. If you are active and mindful of what kind of things you eat, the scale will take care of itself.

Indysteel, you put it very mildly, thank you for this. I do these things that you suggest because I am 33 years and I think I know how to handle things but sometimes I ... fluctuate. Now I am back to normal calories but still I am afraid of too much carbs.
One thing I have to remind myself every day now is stop looking into details and see the big picture.

141.8.
TTOM just ended. Of late the pattern for me is more water retention the week after, so next week could be up a couple of pounds due to that.
But this week was a big one for holiday calories. Tuesday night was a small party for the condo committee I work on. I had a smaller-than-usual lunch in anticipation of the party food, to the point where I was starved by the time I got there. I started with a fair amount of turkey meatballs and coleslaw (made with Splenda instead of sugar) before digging into the desserts. Also I took small portions of most of the desserts.
Yesterday was the holiday potluck lunch at work. I did eat a decent-sized lunch, though I did some damage control by only taking small amounts of most of the things I had. I also saved the best food (stromboli and a slice of cranberry orange bread) and brought it home, so it will be dinner tonight instead of adding those calories to yesterday's intake. However I did a fair amount of dessert sampling. I actually wasn't hungry for "dinner" until almost 11 pm last night. I had some plain yogurt with raisins and walnuts, then was still hungry a half hour later so I had another cup of yogurt, this time vanilla. And I took a long walk last night with more hills than usual, so hopefully overall I didn't have too many excess calories.
Probably the worst thing this week is that I made a rum cake for each party, and I've had a couple of pieces of it so far. Not to mention there is still some leftover from Tuesday which I plan to enjoy this weekend. But it will be breakfast rather than dessert -- not so good in terms of nutrition but at least it will keep the total calorie intake down.
It is a really good rum cake. :D
Next week I'll have to focus on good eating and exercise, since there will be several more dessert opportunities between Christmas and New Year's.

Indysteel, technically I'm not quite 5'11" (I'm 5'10 2/3" so usually round up). My BMI is still in the normal range, but low normal. I'm looking pretty darn lean but not skeletal. Though I don't want to lose another 5 or so pounds or I might just be there.
It's a hard call on the muscle mass thing as this is my busy time of year with my business (I make toys) so I haven't been my usual active self the past 3 weeks.
I had been maintaining at around 145 for months (that's what I am in my avatar pic). Then in October I phased out animal products and salt from my diet. I do get plenty of protein though (I tracked it the first 6 weeks) so no worries there. Legumes really fill me up though, moreso than meat does. I'm slowly coming to terms with the fact that it really is ok to be a little snacky with things like nuts, bananas, avocados in the context of the way I'm eating now. I probably do need a few more calories per day even though I eat a ton of food. There's no way I could possibly eat more food but I could make an effort to eat more calorically dense food.
My veggie addiction wasn't a problem with the animal products but legumes aren't fatty like the animal protein they're replacing (thinking out loud here). I'm thinking that's the issue. More nuts. I can do that. :) It would be nice if things just leveled out on their own though.
I'm not concerned...yet. But I am feeling the need to be cautious and monitor things.

I am glad to know that you're keeping an eye on it. From my own experience the weight that I think is my ideal (118 or so) is just a few pounds off from where I feel really puny (at 115) v and just "off." I look thin at that weight but not emaciated. It is more a question of feeling less energetic and strong. Of course, I am at 126 :( at the moment so this is all just theoretical! Just keep an eye on both the scale and your energy level. You have come so far (and you have my utmost respect) I would hate to see you get so low that you have the opposite problem.

Ah, that could be it, too. I go in for a thyroid check this week. My meds could be off. My Dr keeps my tsh a little extra low intentionally and I could have slipped into the hyperthyroid zone.
I hadn't considered that (though....duh!). That's probably what's going on. My tsh was 0.3 last June and I was a little more than 20lbs heavier then.
I will suspend my worry until after my appt Thursday. :)

Out of curiosity, how did you and your doc arrive at TSH number that you feel is good for you and/or why do you keep it on the lowest end of normal? I was diagnosed with a very mild case of Graves over the summer and have been on a low dose of anti-thyroid meds since late August. I then put on five rather stubborn pounds that may or may have nothing to do with it. When I first started the meds, my TSH shot up to 3. We halved my dose. I get bloodwork done in a couple of weeks. My endo said something about wanting to get me closer to 1 TSH. I have to wonder whether my dose is still a tad high. I hate having to rely on a drug for my metabolism. Before this, I never struggled to keep my weight within my ideal range.

When I was being treated for hypothyroidism alone (nothing else factored in) my endo kept my tsh around 1-2. These days my endo keeps my tsh a little extra suppressed as I've been treated for stage 3 thyroid cancer. I no longer have a thyroid gland so there's no point to the pituitary gland sending out messages to produce thyroid hormones. All that would do in my case is aggravate an autoimmune response (I still test positive for anti-thyroid antibodies) and create a pro-cancer environment.
I totally understand your struggle. Before now I never DIDN'T struggle with my weight. I'm really grateful for the brainstorming because I'm now pretty sure that I must be in the hyperthyroid zone. Hopefully a little tweak of the meds will set everything straight (my Raynaud's is going nuts right now too so maybe that'll calm down too)
I'm not all that familiar with Graves (all my issues have been on the other end of the spectrum) but I can tell ya I don't feel good with a tsh of 3.

Wow, Danielle. It sounds like you have been through a lot. I am hopeful that my doc and I will figure it out with some trial and error. What's strange is that I learned over the summer that in previous years, my TSH had been closer to hypo. No one ever said anything to me about my numbers at that point. During that time, I was riding 5k miles a year, doing yoga for 3-5 hours a week, eating like a horse and struggling to keep weight on. I generally felt good. So I have no idea what a good normal us for me or what I should aim to feel like.

Weight is up this week and I have zero idea why. My exercise and diet have been 100% spot on, so I'm not going to stress out about it.

Heh, next week's weigh-in is going to be interesting. Our trip to the Pacific Northwest has been absolutely grand, and I'm sure the scale will reflect that grandness. :p Eh, I'll just pick up where I left off when I get home.
But boy oh boy, that big ol' piece of Raleighdon pie served up by the man himself today was soooo worth it!

@ Danielle:
This post from another thread has links to good 'ideal' weight info, plus talks about different charts available, and the disparity of perceptions for what is ideal.
You have to add an inch to your height to get an accurate idea, because it assumes that the person is wearing 1 inch heels. In fact, it says all published charts are like that, but most people aren't aware. So look at the range between 5'11 and 6'.
thank you! now I'm really not all that worried. yes, I had to add an inch but that also means I'd be weighing fully dressed, with shoes (vs fresh out of bed, naked, after the potty). I remembered to weigh myself today when fully dressed and I was 142.4 (was 135 nakie this morning).

We weigh very close to the same thing (both neekid and otherwise) and I find this difference SO frustrating...so I need to stop weighing myself clothed

I never weigh myself with clothes on--except at the doctor's office. Always nekkid in the morning.

Me either! It was a total lightbulb moment to realize that "wearing 1" heels" must mean fully dressed. Good to know when I'm looking at charts. :)

Good point, because I thought the chart numbers looked high for my height and bone structure. I still think, even in clothes, I'd be too chunky at the high end of the range they specify, but the low end is right where I am (in clothes and shoes) and is certainly a healthy weight for me, albeit a few lbs. higher than I really feel that I look best.

If memory serves, the chart adds 3 pounds for clothes and shoes.

I never weigh myself with clothes on, either. At the doc's I manage to get my shoes off! It's always 2 lbs. higher. When I went to my endocrinologist a couple of weeks ago, for my osteo. check before my medication, her comment was, "your weight is extremely consistent." That was really meaningful, as I have been going there for 4 years.
I went to and used the weight calculator from the other thread. I am at the low end of recommended weight by medical people (about 3 lbs. over the low #) and about 5 lbs. lower than the "ideal" weight that regular people thought someone of my height should have. I gave myself the extra inch, too.
My BMI was at the low end of the normal range, where it's always been, but I just have to wonder about this. I still have some nice fat on my hips. Nothing that clothing doesn't hide, but while I look thin, I am not skinny. My goal is to get muscular, which is happening on the upper body, since I started taking the strength classes, but I never see change on my lower half, despite the zillions of squats and lunges, etc. Just my cycling thighs getting bigger!

At my doctor's visit last week, they weighed me while I was wearing knee high leather boots. Argh!!!! Even though I try to account for stuff like that when I see the number on the scale, it still freaks me out.

I hate charts! They never make me look good. :D My last weigh in and measuring with my trainer has me at 144 pounds, and 15.9% body fat. I'm only 5'5" and if I only thought about the charts or BMI, I'd be seriously depressed at this weight.

I don't want to set off any triggers, but has anyone ever successfully lost 15 lbs in one month?
I ask because I am exercising, losing weight (albeit very slowly), and eating well, but I found this fantastic sexy dress for a post-holidays party (next month) that I think will look stunning if I can just lose 15 lbs.
So far I'm running about 3 miles 4x/week, drinking lots of water, no sweets, lite carbs, and heavy on vegs/fruits. Anyone have any insight to share?

If you are morbidly obese, then you could conceivably lose 15 pounds in a month. But last I knew, you are not morbidly obese. I can't say, then, that losing 15 pounds in a month is all that likely or healthy. You are talking about serious calorie deprivation--which sounds like a recipe to put that weight (and more) on again pretty quickly. Of course, YMMV.
That, and I don't recommend dieting simply to fit into some dress. That just doesn't sound like the path to sustainable change.

+ 1
How would it look if you lost 8 lbs? A two-lb. per week weight loss is as much as is recommended as "healthy" and possibly sustainable. Otherwise, I think you're just setting yourself up for failure -- either to meet the 15-lb. goal or to keep it off. Slow weight loss is much more sustainable.
Crash dieting is not healthy at all because when you lower your caloric intake enough, your body slows its metabolism to preserve your weight. Then when you start eating a bit more, you gain faster than you would have. This yo-yo effect can really wreak havoc on your body long-term, and you can end up heavier than you started and unable to lose weight despite doing everything "right".

So, DH and I were on a 10-day road trip up to the Pacific Northwest, with stops in Bend, Port Townsend, Victoria BC, Seattle, and Ashland. We visited with SadieKate, Salsabike, and Biciclista (and their lovely DHs). We would have also visited with GLC1968 but time caught up with us (some other time I hope, Catherine!).
I figured I was on vacation and I wasn't going to deprive myself, and if I gained a few pounds so be it, I'd just get right back on track when we got home.
Well, I had my first post-trip WW weigh-in this morning.
153.8
That's the exact same weight I was two weeks ago. Woo-hoo, I didn't gain a bit!!!
While I most certainly did not deprive myself (SK, Salsa and Mimi can attest to that ;)), I didn't snack a lot, and when I did it was most often on fruit. We had bananas & grapes in the car and in our hotel rooms.
Also, if something wasn't fabulous, I didn't eat it. One morning when we were having breakfast and the hash browns (yeah yeah, I could have ordered fruit instead, but I was on vacation dammit) were not all that great; I had a bite or two and just left them alone.
Even if something was really good, I didn't feel the need to finish it. We had fish & chips at a nifty little place in Sidney BC, and my meal came with a BIG pile of fries. I made a dent in them, but left a lot on the plate. That's so unlike me, I'm a charter member of the clean plate club ("I paid for this and I shouldn't let it go to waste!" and "children are starving!!" being my mottos).
And if something was fabulous (and much of what I ate was!) I savored every little bit. I'm a fairly slow eater to begin with but I broke slow-eating records. Lee didn't mind because more often than not I'd put some of my food on his plate. :D
I'm really happy with how this worked out.

Yay, JoBob!
I'm holding steady, which is good. My primary goal is to not gain over the winter. Secondary is losing a few of the pounds I've put on since about June of 2011. I think during the next phase of this thread I will actually state a goal. Hopefully that will force me to take some responsibility!
I'm heavier than I have been in a while (I'm in the upper end of the weight range on the met tables) and I am sure my BF is up since I have lost quite a bit of muscle the last couple of years AND my weight has increased lately. I get most concerned with carrying around any extra weight, no matter what it is, because it affects my running. Too in tune to my body, I guess. 5 lbs makes a huge difference for me. That said, I need to lose about...5 lbs to get back into a more comfortable running weight. A few more than that by event time in the summer would be nice.
I've done pretty well avoiding most of the treats at work. Not 100% angel but not bad. The big victory was avoiding the homemade carmel corn. That was a tough one.

I weighed 142.8 this morning. I was 140.8 two days ago, so I know there's water weight involved. But I won't be near a scale again until 2012 -- my vacation started today.
The weather forecast for the next week or so looks good for getting outside for exercise, and so hopefully I will be able to counteract some of the desserts that are coming my way...

Things seems to have stabilized, which is good. :) Went to the Dr yesterday and my thyroid levels are fine, meds don't need adjusting. He wasn't at all concerned with the bit of sudden weight loss. He said that it's not unheard of when people remove animal products from their diet and that it's only a problem if a new normal doesn't establish itself. He pretty much told me to relax and stop worrying...he reminded me where I started and how dangerously unhealthy I was and pointed out that worrying about where exactly my weight stabilized is just silly since I'm not restricting calories or eating nutrient-poor foods.

Good news, Dannielle!
Today I had trouble getting the scale to work right and find a flat spot on the motorhome floor in my early morning daze. So, I had three readings and I am not sure that I am going to believe the lowest. I'll take the middle at 110.4.

198 even :( ....just a few ounces down from last week. 3# short from my goal..but considering the fact that I am not on a diet + the Holidays food and not really killing myself at the gym...thats pretty cool. Also I am really dropping sizes and toning very quickly...maybe that's why...the muscles are taking over the fat.
I will try to lose 10-15 pounds by my Bday (Feb 23) but for that to happen I know for sure I will have to go on a strict HEalthy diet and really stick to it. I have done it before though... Let's see If I am strong enough to do it :)
