Is this possible with gel style bar tape? I had it figured out via some online sites but didn't know how to finish it up and knew the tension was off. LBS thought the design was awesome but admitted that it couldn't be done with this kind of bar tape without it falling apart. It took me 3 hours to get this far and love the look but ended up with him wrapping it in red tape for me. LBS owner was really great and showed me how to do it. I think calling up first and asking if he had time to help me worked so much better than showing up and asking if he had the time to help.

Boy, I hope someone has an answer for you. I really like that look and would do it on my bike if I knew how!
That looks totally WICKED! I love it! Sorry it sounds like it can't be done with gel tape, what a bummer.
I don't think it can be done with tape that is too stiff - cork tape or gel tape, but you could get some gel to put under the tape - Specialized makes some (I think they call it Bar Phat or something silly like that) and I think a few other manufacturers might too. I'm pretty sure that my new Fizik tape came with some gel pads - in fact I remember cutting it down to fit.

Do a search on here, Andrea(who doesn't post anymore) did this with one of her bikes and there is a whole thread somewhere on it!

Dang, I wish my metallic blue Fizik tape didn't wear so well and look still brand new after nearly 3500 miles--I want that tape! I know what I'm doing when the time comes to replace my tape (we might have to do this with DS's planned Christmas present -- Redline Conquest 24).
