Over the weekend, my dog Pokey let me know it was time to go, after more than a year of declining health. So Monday we made that last trip to the vet. It was time.
His favorite hobby was chasing squirrels. One time he caught one; then when he was looking at me with a proud doggy grin on his face, it escaped.
This morning, one of the cats kept wandering through the house looking and calling for his buddy. But no Pokey.

((((skhill)))). I'm so sorry for you loss. I'm sad so many TEers have had to say goodbye to their beloved pets of late. Take care of yourself.

Pokey will be greated at the Rainbow Bridge by many TE pups who will show him where the squirrel trees are.
One of my kitties meowed all over the house and searched the yard after Nala made that last trip to the vet. Calypso would then sleep on Nala's bed - she was by it when Nala was on it. I think animals do mourn.
Some zen skritches and ear rubs being sent to your kitties.

So sad ... I try not to let stories like this make me tear up but I can't help it. Death is just so unbearable to me. I lost my baby brother a little over a year ago and I still have that deep rooted hurt and sense of pain in my chest when I think about him. I think that when we lose a living companion who we love, at least for me, it's unbearable because when I love something or someone they become as much a part of me as life itself.
I cannot bear to think about my dog passing ... I know she will someday and when she does I know it will hurt me deeply.
I'm sorry you're feeling that pain right now. :(

Pokey was loved and you will always have memories. Pokey is 'eternally chasing squirrels' at Rainbow Bridge.

Did my first leaf-raking of the year late this afternoon. That had always been great dog-human time; Pokey loved to "help" with the leaves, mostly by digging through every pile making sure there was no toy hidden away...
But I'm thankful for his long life. As we were pulling into the vet's parking lot, someone was bringing in a young dog who had just been hit by a car. If she survived, it would be without one of her legs. At least Pokey had a very healthy, vigorous 13 years, with 2 years of a basically happy decline.
thanks, y'all
