I think I've seen toe clips that are just that, clips without straps. I saw some folks wearing them on a recent ALC training ride, but haven't found them in any LBS's.

Is there such a thing? or am I imagining this?

Before I got pedals that you clip into with the cleats on the bottom of shoes, I used the "clips" that had the plastic guard you slipped your toe into and the straps down the sides to hold you in place.

However, having to undo straps made me nervous, so we took the straps off and just left the front hard-ish/flexy plastic guard over the front. That was a great way to introduce me to being "attached" to the bike without actually being attached!

I wonder if that (or something similar) is what you saw?

I used them when I very first started cycling. I now use clipless on my road bikes, but still use these on my mountain bike - I broke my wrist when I tried clipless on my mountain bike, and these do the job for me :D

Sounds like something to wear with a strapless evening gown. I got a set at Cylcle Sports in Oakland that are made by Pyramid. Really like them.

.... and then there are 'power grips' which sound like they are straps without clips - I've read about them but never seen them here in NZ
