As with everything else, there is always too much choice, so my question is, what are the specific qualities to look for when buying a cross trainer?

I do not intend spending too much, in fact I am currently looking on Ebay, as I get this distinct feeling that people often buy them and quickly get fed up with them.

Any advice/suggestions appreciated. :)

Do you mean an elliptical machine? Don't buy anything you haven't ridden first.

The ergonomics tends to be crummy even in gym-caliber machines. The foot pads are splayed wide apart, and the size of the stride circle is way too big for shorter people.

If you can find one that fits, then look for the same things you'd be interested in with any home exercise machine - is it flimsy? is it so loud you wouldn't be able to deal with it for the duration of a workout? How easy is it to change resistance during a workout?

But I'd look at fit first, and I wouldn't honestly be optimistic about finding one, especially with the issues you've had.

Please define what you are looking for! I always think of a cross trainer as a kind of work out shoe.

It might have helped had I given more detail.

Yes, an elliptical machine.

Thanks OakLeaf, all makes sense.

how about an elliptirider, the new bike that you ride standing up and striding, like an elliptical. I can't recall the website or URL but there was a you tube about someone riding across the US on one. It looked like fun. Of course if you are doing this to have something to do inside in bad weather than the elliptirider wouldn't work.

just a thought though.
