It's official! Dark chocolate is better for you than broccoli!
(OK, for someone with 2 degrees in the sciences, I'll admit it's a slightly loose interpretation of the data) But look! More antioxidants! Depressingly, brussel sprouts are also better than broccoli, but I'm going to put my fingers in my ears and hum loudly, pretending I didn't hear that.

TOP ANTIOXIDANT FOODS COMPARISON CHART
*Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, equivs. per 100 gm, approx. 3 ½ oz.

Dark Chocolate 13,120
Milk Chocolate 6,740
Prunes 5,770
Raisins 2,830
Blueberries 2,400
Blackberries 2,036
Strawberries 1,540
Raspberries 1,220
Brussels Sprouts 980
Plums 949
Alfalfa Sprouts 930
Broccoli Florets 890

This is from the link CorsairMac gave us about fudge in a jar. Which, by the way, is now sitting next to me, with a spoon in it! heeheeheehee :p

LOL - brussel sprouts - they keep growing them but I want to know WHO is eating them?. I agree fingers in ears and humming loudly is best. :D :D

Yum, not a thing on that list I don't like but Bubba will only let me eat brussel sprouts when he's out of town. :(

Thank goodness. Somebody has to support the farmer. I have had my moments of liking brussel sprouts. The last such moment was in the '80s, as I recall, but it could happen again...if I sustain a head injury or something...

Hey! I just installed and learned how to use my scanner! Here's a picture of me after the Chicago marathon! The Hilton Hotel displayed all 40,000 names of the runners in their windows on Michigan Ave. I hobbled over there with my family and friends after the race to see it. :D L.

Poor broccoli....way down there at the bottom. Must be "green with envy" at dark chocolate getting all the accolades. heehee

Love broccoli!!! Down with brussel sprouts!! (sorry, Sadiekate...gotta draw the line there). And oh my oh my....dark chocolate and I are best buddies.

HA! I knew that blueberry cocktail I had last night was good for me!

Princess was added to Zippy because I'm a "picky" eater.

Dark Chocolate it's okay.
Milk Chocolate the best, but needs to be quality chocolate
Prunes yuck!
Raisins fine raw, but don't cook them
Blueberries yum!
Blackberries ditto
Strawberries ditto
Raspberries ditto
Brussels Sprouts yuck!
Plums like 'em, but I get the juice all over me
Alfalfa Sprouts okay
Broccoli Florets ehhh.. I'll eat 'em if I have to, but would rather not.

So I'll have a bunch of berries with milk chocolate on
top!

But I gotta wonder - how did prunes end up above plums?

More concentrated nutrients, I guess. Less water means more antioxidants per gram of prune than per gram of plum. :)

Ever try brussels sprouts on pizza? MMMMM-HMMMM!

I've been feeling a little atheistic lately, but with dark chocolate on the top of the list, maybe God loves us after all.

What do you suppose would be left over if you took the water out of watermelon?

Yay for chocolate!

As for Brussell's sprouts...They were the one vegetable my mother would cook and I would actually run gagging from the house. However...I went to Trader Joes the other night and they were serving them up quartered, tossed in olive oil and garlic, salt and pepper, oven roasted at 400 dgrees for 10 minutes, covered with crisp bacon pieces and roasted for 2 minutes more. They were really good! Honest! And no gagging over-cooked cruciferous vegetable smell.

I haven't tired cooking them myself yet, and I would keep the dark chocolate close by, just in case.

Mmmm. Sounds good. Most things taste good with enough garlic and bacon. :D

As for the watermelon, I think you'd be left with cellulose and pink.

I'm with you SK - I adore brussel sprouts - we're having an Indian-theme Thanksging (Asian Indian, not American Indian) and one of the dishes is brussels with indian spices - yum. I love 'em "hashed" with olive oil, garlic and pine nuts and a squeeze of lemon too. I have converted many a brussel sprout hater... but I dont mind eating with sprout-haters either - more for me!

You got that right!!

Dark chocolate is darn good to!

Yeah Yeah 1000 X yeah to the dark chocolate.

But has anybody heard that thing about chocolate and breast cancer. Some *&!*% did a study and asked breast cancer survivors about their eating habits and "found" they ate more choc than "normal". Thereby concluding that we should eat less if at all (something about insulin - couldn't follow it for the shock).
Because we all know that *he* could
and should
have concluded that chocolate is why we are Survivors . :p How dumb can you get?

At which point I will also vote for the blueberries.

Of course, real health-nuts will just take a spoonful of cocoa powder for their dark chocolate dose. None of that sugar added nonsense. ;)

Yeah, a vegetarian friend of mine threw a pizza party and really went crazy on variations. The brussels sprouts were sort of nutty and sweet and really, really good. Back in my carefree carb-eating days, I also sometimes made pizza at home with sourdough crust, thinly sliced (homegrown) potatoes and sauteed leeks and cheese.

Man, the food was good in those days, but I was also working my way up to 300 lbs......

...Some *&!*% did a study and asked breast cancer survivors about their eating habits and "found" they ate more choc than "normal". ... *he* could and should have concluded that chocolate is why we are Survivors.
Not necessarily. What was the comparison? Was he comparing women who survived breast cancer to women who never got it? Or to women who died? If the former, then his conclusion, on the face of it, may be valid, depending on the design of the study. If the latter -- well, unless you are John Edward, it's a little difficult to ask the deceased about their chocolate-eating habits.

A better study would be to track forty thousand women over twenty years, including chocolate-eating habits in the data. If the women who ate more chocolate also got more cancer, then a correlation could be made -- unless, of course, the women who ate more chocolate also smoked more, ate less broccoli, had more or fewer pregnancies, whatever.

Personally, I don't like chocolate, and I do like broccoli, and I adore brussel sprouts! <ducks>

It was just a tiny item on the evening news, so I dunno all the details.
But I *do* go off half-cocked about this kind of thing as a breast cancer survivor myself. Everything up till that study I ate or didn't (as the case may be) all my adult life; and I still got it at 40. I don't believe it's only about food and it's certainly not about one particular food.
But if you *do* get breast cancer *and* you are in good nutritional and psychological shape I reckon you have a better chance.
And anyway... I could recover from the cancer and then a few years later get squashed by a tractor  (and that doesn't correlate with chocolate consumption!) and I could have been just as dead
It's basically a question of how quick you can get back to the bike when all is said and done

Wrapper sticks to bar, distracted woman desperate for chocolate doesn't see tractor, tragedy ensues.
yes....yes....I see how it could happen....and if said woman had been desperate for brussel sprouts....well, nobody gets desperate for brussel sprouts, and anyways, they don't come in wrappers! L.

Be serious ladies/women/gals/personnes!

I was talking to the consultant food technologist at work ( very smart, very sexy, x-th dan black belt in karate - who wouldn't believe him?)

He said we need *both *chocolate and blueberrries

(I didn't mention the brussel sprouts - I mean would *you* mention brussel sprouts to someone I have described thus-ly??)

Anyway...
the anti-oxidants that are based on/in water you get from the blueberries and
the anti-oxidants that are based on/in fats are found in the chocolate

Good thing I got squashed by that tractor or I never would have met him;
I mean had the information to give you on this important issue! ;) ;)

Blueberries and chocolate!

See's Blueberry Truffle?

Oh, do I miss California! (Although I'm not keen on chocolate, I must admit that I do enjoy See's. And Winchell's. No Winchell's this side of the Rockies, as far as I can tell, nor any See's, either. And mail order is not the same. :( )

Yesterday I found Hershey's extra dark chocolate with blubeberries, cranberries and almonds in it. Talk about the best of both worlds! Still, nothing beats Dove dark chocolate, in my opinion.
