I applied for & interviewed for my city's Bicycle Advisory Committee in August. I don't work in the bike industry or have any special bike knowledge. I am a "regular" (my DH might disagree) person who is enthusiastic about riding my bike for fun & leisure. I received a letter from the Mayor congratulating me and saying that the City Council approved my appointment to the committee!

As an aside, my DH is on this committee of nine citizens of this city. It was the Chair Person who suggested to him that I apply.

I was totally relaxed during my interview because I did not think I had a chance! I applied thinking that the experience of applying would be interesting since I have never done anything like that. Of course it's a volunteer position and I definitely have opinions about things. So I will learn how things work. We are not having a meeting this month, but there are other meetings that are bike related that I will attend soon. My name as a member is already the their official website!

Don't I feel like a "mucky-muck"! ;)

Thanks everyone.

@rendenread, I thought to use Fred Flintsone's "Grand Pooh-Bah", but since I'm not Chair of the committee I could also refer to myself as an "associate Pooh-Bah". ;)

Congratulations! Being offered and appointment like that is quite an honor.

Speaking from the perspective of the "other side" in this, volunteers are invaluable and worth their weight in gold. Public input on policy matters that affect the public is critical to the success of a project or planning for future infastructure. It is not always easy to find dedicated people who are willing to give their time and people in municipal work are grateful to them for it.

You are to be commended for volunteering!

@SmittyKitty, Yes Portland is great. I am not on their committee. I live in Beaverton, which is next city west. ;)
