Due to my recent foot injury, I am wondering if I might need to switch to a different pedal type when I am able to start riding again. I have SPDs and love them. I like being able to walk comfortably when I am wearing them; however, to clip out you have to do a hard twist of your foot which I am thinking will aggravate the injury I have. Mine are already at the loosest setting, and I can't change the foot I clip out on first. I am just too "right footed" I guess. Do other types of clipless pedals use a different clip out motion?

It sounds like you're using the SPD single-release (twist motion) cleats? What about SPD multi-release cleats (model # SH-56)? They allow you to pull your foot out in more directions. You wouldn't have to change your pedals in order to try these new cleats.

I don't really like them because they release too easily IMO, but they might be perfect for your situation.

There are different degrees to which you must twist your feet out to unclip for different pedals, I think... although 15 degrees twisting seems common. Have not done a lot of research on this.

You might try the multiple-release SPD cleats. (And if you like, you can also try twisting your foot inward a little bit with the cleats you currently have--it worked fine when I couldn't get the outward motion to work!)
