View Full Version : Torn rotator cuff?

Well, I hope it's nothing, but will soo enough know... I've been fearful that something serious was going on with my shoulder. For three weeks it's been bothering me, right after my bike crash, but I tried to ignore it hoping would get better. It's not.

Going to the doc I the morning to see wha he says, which likely means some tests or diagnostic. I have some weakeness/pain when trying to lift, but no pain what so ever when at rest, but I do have an odd sensation and crunching when rotating the joint the certain ways. I'm hoping it's not a torn rotator cuff.

Should have posted here insteadof over in bike group. Anyone have experience with shoulder injury?

yes, from years of driving a school bus, partially torn in the anterior region. opted out of surgery. I am having vast improvements in the area from physical therapy and strength training.

I have an old rotator cuff injury. If you press down on my left arm when it is extended it is weak, my arm will drop easily. Physical therapy and doing the assigned exercises has helped, no more pain when I am riding.

I had surgery in May to repair a torn rotator cuff. I injured myself in a fall last summer. It took me a while to clue in that something was really wrong (I had also injured ribs and my collarbone so the shoulder was the least painful thing). I didn't have a complete tear...partial, about 75% torn...but I was continuing to irritate it in yoga class and such. I didn't have pain at rest either. It really only hurt after yoga or pilates class...anything plank/push-up-related made me really sore. And I noticed weakness when doing things like pulling wet laundry out of the washer or taking a full gallon of milk out of the fridge.

Quick update... Two+ weeks and pretty much the same condition for the shoulder. Doc wanted me on the meds and if that didn't work, off to ortho, so I've got an appointment tomorrow. We'll see what they say.

Glad I found this thread. I crashed 10 miles into a 200 mile ride 2 weeks ago (yes I finished) and my shoulder MRI is Monday. :eyeroll:

Shannon let us know what they say.

I am having the same kind of pain. I can not even lift my arm over my head. I think mine occurred while using loppers to cut large branches while reaching up.

Oh boy. Sending healing thoughts to all three of you, rotator cuff injuries are bad news.

Ask about the modified headstand move (it's done against a wall, no balance required) that was in the news last month, maybe.

The scapula in the same shoulder is in a bunch of pieces, but healed up great. This hurts w/ twisting movement - seatbelt, driving (arcing the arm over the wheel to turn), closing car door, shirts on and off. Luckily doesn't hurt while riding. I don't think mines bad, but we will see Monday.

MP -

Could be what I did - partially separated ac joint. PT and a long time, and I was fine (I have done this to both shoulders in 2 crashes a year apart). Lifting weight away from my body (putting dishes up, shifting a stick shift, etc) were the hardest things.

Hoping the MRI says things will heal fast!

Had my appointment today with the Ortho. Did X-rays in office and he ordered a MRI. He thinks it's highly likely a torn Labrum, not the rotator cuff, so will know for certain after the MRI... Now just waiting for the imaging place to call and set it up.

Well, I saw my doc to go over the MRI today. No rotator cuff tear. There is a labrum tear and it looked like I probably dislocated my shoulder at the time of this crash (though with the old displaced scapula fracture, it seemed to make it hard for them to figure out what happened when.)

So 8 weeks of PT, probably no surgery - yay!

Roadtrip, any news on yours?

Woooohooooo!! Went to the doc after work yesterday for a follow up on my MRI. I saw my films before the doc came in and of course I didn't really know what I was looking at- aside from the obvious!

Doc comes in and declares me good to go with some PT... No tear or damage as we had suspected. :)

Might be my turn for this one :( Was snowboarding on Tuesday, it was icy and windy and pretty much a white-out. No idea what happened. I was up, I was sailing through the air, there was a snap somewhere and nauseating shoulder/arm pain, and then I was bouncing on my back. I can finally touch my head again and there is some mottled bruising on the front of my bicep (which doesn't seem to be hurt at all) but I can't pull or push with that arm without pain. I don't have time to go to a doctor yet.

I'm not enjoying being left handed one bit!

awww Jess... that sucks. I hope you feel better soon and it's just a "flesh" wound like mine ended up being. I had no real "pain" after my fall and I think it was more adrenalin and the WOOO HOOO I'm not dead kinda thing, followed by MY BIKE, then checking to see if my friend was OK.

(note I checked my bike first)

Haha thanks, turns out it was a break instead. It's mostly feeling better but I get that awful deep ache every so often. But the PT should be pretty easy, since I can pretty much do everything if I'm gentle with it. Just can't put weight on it, so no bike rides for another few weeks.
