View Full Version : Let the running season begin! September Running

It's the beginning of running season (for me anyways). Traditionally, September/October are the last two hard training months on the bike and the time when I begin working on my base for running again. I don't like to do too much of either sport, I just get burnt out. I tried "winter biking" this year and I will never be tempted to do it ever again. Ever. I'll stick to running thank you.
Went for a very hot, humid, wet run this morning. 6.5 miles. Same run I did last week. Except last week I averaged 20 seconds a mile faster AND had a lower heart rate . . . I'm guessing this has to do with the drastic difference in temperature and humidity. I much prefer running in the cold.
I managed to snort Endura through my nose at some point. It was awful. I felt like I need to sneeze and cough the rest of the way home. And my nose was super runny (no pun intended).

Did 5 miles with 3 at 'tempo' last night after work. Tempo for me is trying to maintain a 10M/M pace...so not exactly fast. Funny thing was, the tempo part was actually less painful than the slower parts. I think maybe my slow, easy running form is off.
New shoes worked great (run #2). These might be keepers!

I did a little over 10 mostly hilly miles today. I was intentionally keeping it easy and not looking at pace, but honestly it felt quicker than the 11 minute pace it wound up being. Ah well ... I had a good tempo run on flat ground last week, 6 miles @9:01. Hot today, but they're calling for it to cool off by next week.

NB Minimus trail. Wide width, short enough for me, and apparently tight enough around the arch to hold the shoe in place when I run and not give me black and blue toes. This was a problem with all my other mimimal shoes - if they were wide enough for my toe spread, they turned them black and blue eventually!
Totally bare became too much of a hassle, so this might be the right compromise for me.

Those are the shoes I want.
I ran...not sure the distance, but 38 minutes up a mountain and then 12:30 back down it yesterday. With walk breaks when the world started spinning. Reminds me, I need to look up those trail maps.

It was a little cooler yesterday - in the mid 70s. I went out for a trail run on the Emigrant Trail. Beautiful. I felt good, there was no one else out there, and I ran for a full hour without a thought. I love it when things come together like that.

To race or not to race, that was the question. Of course, I raced, a 5k fundraiser for a church-run food pantry in my neighborhood. I had planned on not racing again until I got my weight back up to 125, but oh well... We're currently having our hottest weather of the year, and it was 90F when I got to the finish line (YUCK!!!!). So I approached the race as a group run with a finish line and awards ceremony, and left my watch in the car. It was awful-- my right calf started cramping about 2 miles in, and I ended up walking most of the last mile. Final time was 31:25, my slowest ever. I wasn't going to hang around for the awards but I ran into a friend, and so I was there to get the shocking news that I'd won my age group! Kinda embarassing, my worst race ever and I won.
It was so awful out there that only 2 runners broke 20:00. But cooler weather's on the way-- predicted high for Monday is only 68F. Today's forcast is for 98F.

Ten miles this morning...whole run was below 60 degrees.
I remembered the hard way why I don't run with a fuel belt. So much jostling of my innards...I hate that thing. Dumped it at the last water stop with our coach. Last 2 miles were pure bliss.

Trying to get back into running. Went out today and just did a very slow 3 miles. (as well as a couple of walk breaks) It was very hot and humid so that didnt help.
I am taking it very very slow so I dont hurt my foot. I'm a bit paranoid since having foot surgery about 6 mos ago that entailed removing and reattaching my AT. But the upside is... so far, so good! :)
Good running everyone. :)

Ran/walked 30 minutes with the dog early this morning. That's the most he's run in a few months. Gotta really watch him, because he loves to run, but he's not the sleek healthy runner he once was. As soon as he drops behind me, or his head starts lowering, we stop and walk.
At one point a cyclist went past us and called out "Pretty dog!" :p
Yes, he is, and the best running buddy ever. It's very hard watching him get old and sore. (The vet says he's ok to keep running, as long as he's having fun.)
Very very happy with my Saucony Kinvaras. For being so lightweight and having almost no outsole, they are really holding up well.

This is the month I get back to running. YAY!!! I had to quit 2-3 months ago, because the tendons in my ankles and shins could not handle running on top of the 1000+ miles/month I was riding to prep for PBP. Now that that is over, I can sart running agin. I'm so excited to get back out there! Of course, I fully expect to have to run/walk for the first couple of weeks, so as not to overdo it, but that's OK.
Hoping to do alot of trail running this winter. I really enjoy it. But once the days get shorter, I'll only be able to do that on weekends. But for now, I hope to get out a few nights a week and run on the Wildwood trail, which is only 15 minutes from my office. The trick is getting out of the office at a reasonable time....
I haven't been so good about running lately...hot weather is the pits! So glad fall is coming...looking forward to being able to actually run without getting wiped out just from the heat. I would have run today but it was just too sticky so I walked instead, on some new trails (on the property of a local farm/apple orchard) that are really nice. Next time I might even try running barefoot there...the trails aren't as rocky as most of the ones around here and I didn't see any broken glass (or even any other trash) the entire time. Those trails will be perfect for winter snowshoeing too.

It's time for a very easy week, so I didn't run Sunday or Monday, and today went just 2 miles on the treadmill (it's chilly, raining, and windy this morning). I'd forgotten just how much I hate the treadmill...
Anyone doing a 9/11 commerative run this weekend? There are a bunch around here. Thinking of doing the one put on by our local fire department; it's 4.03 mile, in honor of the 403 firefighters that died in NY.

I ran today! Woot! First time since June 3rd, when I finally had to give it up due to my PBP training. It was so awesome to lace up my shoes and just go. No worry about pacing or distance or anything. I just ran until I felt like turning around, then turned around and ran home.
Happy girl!
I convinced my neighbor to do intervals with me last night, in the rain -- 4 x 800. We are training for half marathon in October and we're feeling strong! After, she came over with a glass of wine. We deserved it. :)

yay Susan! Glad you had a good first, no-pressure run.
I went for a trail run yesterday. It started out as the perfect, ideal fall run. I was loving it and feeling pretty good until about 2/3s of the way in. My old friend the ovarian cyst is back  I tried running through the pain in order to get it to rupture, but I couldn't stand it. Hopefully it will go away soon. The weather is PERFECT for running right now.

4 miles at an easy pace after work yesterday. It was 90+ when I left, and I generally hate the heat, but I survived. I'm actually very proud of myself because I had just about 10 different things against me as I headed out and yet I did the whole route anyway. :)

Yep it's running season for me again too. Just did my first outdoor run in prolly 5 months or so. Whew that hurt!
Yesterday's run was about an hour on the trails at the apple orchard/farm in town--as a bonus I found some wild Concord grapes growing along the side of the road when I finished. Tonight was just a short one--15 or 20 minutes. I took my neighbor's Siberian husky along since he had said he'd be happy to have me do so--they weren't sure how that would go since she hadn't been on a leash in a while but we did great. She tried to pull at the beginning but I didn't go anywhere until there was slack in the leash, then once we got running she did pretty well. Next time we'll go a little longer but I didn't want to overdo since this dog hadn't run or done a long walk in a while; when I brought her back she seemed like she wanted to go longer!

Finished my first ever 5k race tonight! :D I wont know my time until it is posted (forgot to look at the clock when I crossed the finish line) in a few days. But it doesnt matter. I am happy I ran the entire race. I did make the rookie mistake of running faster than my normal pace at the start. It might not seem like a big deal to most people (it is "only" three miles....) but I started running this summer so it had a big impact on me. When I saw the 2 mile marker and already felt worse than after my normal three mile runs... well, there was one brief thought of "I could just call it quits and be happy I just showed up." But I kept going. Celebrated with a big bacon and bleu cheese burger with fries. Very yummy.
eta: 32:31 was my time. I expected to be around the 35 min mark so this makes me happy. Next time I will try for sub-30.

Way to go, rubysoho! And starting out too fast isn't just a rookie thing, you just learn how to cope with it better!
I meant to race this weekend, but I overslept. I'd counted on my cats not letting me sleep past 6:30, so didn't set the alarm. For once the cats decided to let me sleep. Sigh. Probably needed the sleep...

Way to go rubysoho! I know I rely way too much on my Garmin at any distance. Still, a mid-race slump is kind of normal ... not necessarily the result of going out too fast ... skhill is right, you learn how to deal with it.
I did 12 yesterday and felt pretty good. I totally don't have enough speedwork in my legs this summer though. Fall weather is here ...
Yay Susan! That's such a great feeling. :)
About 40 minutes road/trail combo today, did sort of a fartlek workout that included some walking. It's not that hot out but felt kind of sticky today; amazing how much that affects my running. I think now that fall is coming I am going to try to increase my mileage as the weather gets cooler, and maybe try to find a half marathon to train for. I know there's one in Acadia National Park but it's this month so too soon to do it this year...maybe I will just do it next year. A ten-mile trail race might be something to look for this fall...

Good job, rubysoho!
I did 2.5 miles at an easy pace on Saturday (plan called for 3 but I ran out of sidewalk on my out and back route, so I called it good enough and turned around).
Sunday was my long run of the week. Did 8 miles and felt pretty good! My pace was very slow, but I'm ok with that. I left early to get the cool of the day and it's a good thing because it was warming up very fast. 56F when I started, 72F when I was done! Temps hit mid 90's by the afternoon, so I'm glad I went when I did.

Went to run 6.5 miles with my running partner last night. Surprisingly my legs felt pretty fresh (after Saturday's 100 miler and Sunday's 30 mile bike rides). However, my running partner did not feel so fresh. We ended up jogging 2 miles and walking 2 home. Which, honestly, was probably a lot better for me. I needed a rest day.
I did a 5K race last Sunday. I've been running about once every 2 weeks for 30 minutes each time, so wasn't expecting a good time. However, I was about 20 seconds faster than when I ran the same race in 2008 and still in the ~9.5 min/mile range. My daughter ran the race also and finished 1st in her category! This is a small race, and I finished 2nd in 2008, so your place really depends on who enters in your category. The fastest women this year were over 40 and under 20.

Way to go Deb!
I did mile repeats today. I had some errands to run in town, so it's always nice to do my speedwork on a paved trail instead of along the highway, which is where I have to go to find a flat place to run from home. Today I used the downtown MUP instead of the hospital's fitness trail that I usually use, so the variety was nice.

I've not been posting much but have been training for the St. Louis Rock 'n Roll HM in October. Just had to tell you all that I ran my first 9 minute mile! I know that doesn't sound like much to most of you ladies but it is to me. Ack, I ran for about 10 minutes of a 30 minute treadmill hill walk, at the hotel I am at, yesterday. My legs are killing me!
It's starting to be the time of year when I start running again, but I am not sure this year. It really messes up my body. On Thursday, I went out for a trail run, which I much prefer, but it was so early, even my headlamp didn't help me. The trail is a bit overgrown and I kind of scared myself with all of the noises in the woods... went back to the street and walked 3.5 miles.
Bike Chick, that is awesome. You and I started at the same time and I never became a real runner.... I am kind of convinced that I am a cyclist and will never be a runner, even though my head thinks I am.
And congrats, Deb.

Crankin, reading your running posts over the last few years tells me you have a love-hate relationship with running like I have (had) with cycling. Maybe you just need to remove all expectations of structure, how you should feel, distance, pace, and just run or walk/run (in the woods)? I'd say it's not worth it to run if you don't like it (regardless of reason), but it seems to me (from the outside) that you do...but then you don't.
In my case, I finally just gave up on cycling. I have significant pain that we discovered this summer is due to femoral acetabular impingement and a torn labrum in the left hip. I miss cycling but I'm getting over it.
Have you tried a pro-con list for running? Or did it not help?

Bike Chick, that 9 minute mile is awesome!
Yesterday's run reminds me why I love this so much. Started out around 6:30 am, when it was still dark. But the moon was shining, and I could pick out Orion and 2 planets despite the city lights. About a mile down the road, I realized what felt so strange-- the cold dry air and the smell of wood fires spoke of fall, but the sounds were those of the summer insects. Kept on running, and saw dawn start to creep across the horizon. Ended up running further than I had intended, the changing colors on the clouds were so enthralling. 7 miles at a slow pace, with many smiles per mile.

I actually drove to run today.
Normally - unless I'm driving to my friend's house to run with her - I just do my solo runs out the front door of my house. I've got 2, 3, and 4 mile routes plotted. But I live in a hilly neighborhood, and I wasn't feeling the love for a hilly run. Plus, I have a flat tri in two weeks, and I wanted to get some flat running in. So...I drove to a parking lot of the MUT that parallels the road I bike commute on to work, and ran from there (http://connect.garmin.com/activity/115341836). I ran 2 miles back up the MUT - following the creek bed for its slightly uphill journey, then turned around and ran 2 miles back. So, 4 miles in about 46 minutes. I don't set the MUT on fire with my speed, but at least I was consistent.

Yellow, you are right. I want to love running and in my head I picture myself being strong running, but once I get out there, it's mostly a no-go. And when i do run faster or further than usual, I pay for it for the next few days. I have some physical issues with cycling, too, but it never stops me from riding; in fact I can often achieve a good average for me when i start off feeling like crap. I really don't have any expectations of speed or mileage, though, when I run. It's just, with cycling, I had a steady improvement for a few years, until I realized I was driving myself nuts trying to get faster and now I am much more relaxed about it. But, I never had that ramp up with running. I had one spring and one fall where I steadily improved, but then either cycling or winter sports took over. It just pisses me off; I see others who look much more out of shape than me become "runners," and I just don't seem to have it.
What's a pro-con list? Pardon for being ignorant...

09-18-2011, 01:51 PM
@Crankin, I think what she meant is just to make a list of the pros and cons of running, for you; take a hard look at what you're getting from it vs. what it seems to take out of you, to help you decide whether you want to continue pushing at it. Sounds like a good idea to me.
I was feeling just super sore and tired today - partly from the last couple of days, partly I'm not sure why - so I gave the hypothetical magic 8-ball a shake for the first time in a while. It said to do the 9-mile loop that's the flattest run I get from home (something like 500 feet of climbing, give or take). It felt surprisingly good, right at a 10 minute pace. It was a perfect day for running, 70° and very dry.
I'll do the hilly 13 next week instead, and then start my taper - although it's hard for me to get excited about this half, I do have a time goal in mind.

Ooh, exciting, Oak! Keeping my fingers crossed for you!
I ran last Friday (also on the VT campus) where I did 3 miles with a coworker. We kept a good pace despite having run the day before. Then, on the flight home, we did another run workout in the Charlotte airport. Gate E28 to gate B11 in less than 10 minutes while carrying luggage! Oy. I hate that. But we made it - barely. It was so close that the lady encouraged me to 'run, don't walk!' down the jet way, the baggage guy was standing there to take my now 'gate checked' bag, and they closed the airplane door directly behind me. Whew! Bonus points to USAir for getting that bag all the way to Porland without issue, too.
Anyway, I blew off my longer run yesterday in favor of some much needed farm work, but I hope to still get it in this evening after work.

The Good News:
Had an absolute BLAST with my friend Jill yesterday doing the Muddy Buddy. http://muddy-buddy.competitor.com/ What a hoot! Ends up being about 3 miles running and 3 miles mountain biking for each team member. The obstacles were quite challenging, and the terrain was surprisingly tough, but we had so much fun. I look forward to doing it again next year.
The bad news:
My left knee is not healing, and if anything it's worse now than it was right after Paris-Brest-Paris. I think I need to call a 2-3 week hiatus from ALL running and riding. It's definitely an overuse injury, and if I don't get it healed now, my Ironman training is going to be impossible. Sooooo, for the next few weeks, I'm afraid it's going to be nothing but the pool and the weight room for me. :( (OTOH, if I spend enough time in the gym, maybe I can have shoulders like Veronica. That would be awesome. :D )

Crankin, I know what you mean about the love/hate relationship with running. It's taken me 2 years to get to this point and I'm still S-L-O-W. Some people are naturals and improve so fast but not me but I've stuck with it even though I hated it a year ago because it hurt so bad. I just didn't progress like I did with cycling. It seems like something hurt every time I ran. I had shin splints and tendonitis and IT band problems but stuck with it and it has finally paid off. I'm enjoying it now and am even thinking of doing a marathon, even though I'm still slow. I will never be a fast runner but I finally feel like a runner. Just think if it as good cross-training for the bike.
I ran the Upper Midwest Warrior Dash (http://warriordash.com/)over the weekend. Holy cow, what fun!!! I don't have any pictures yet but if anyone gets the chance to do one or is even considering it, do it! I would highly recommend it. I did it with DH, DS and DDIL. We had a blast!

Bike Chick, that is the attitude I am trying to take, and I've always thought of my running as cross training. I am a cyclist, and that's always going to be my #1, until I keel over.
I ran today! I went out to walk, started running and ran almost the whole way down and up my hill (a whole 2.4 miles). Of course, seeing the woman who walks her dog off leash (with the dog running ahead) who then screams at us for almost running the dog over in both our cars and bikes, made me run faster. I am going to just take it as it comes. I'll never do a tri, because I really dislike swimming and I have a great fear of not being able to touch the bottom. That doesn't bother me. This is the time of year I usual run, so we'll see.

And it never gets easier. I'm progressed to clapping push ups and unassisted pull ups and dips.
Ugh. My Fitness Center is having a "Battle of the Fittest" competition this month. Each week, we have a new "challenge." Next week is # of push ups in 1 minute. I'm totally dreading it. If there is one thing I absolutely detest - and cannot do to save my life - it's a push up (to say nothing of pull ups and dips...yikes). :(
Did 3 miles this morning is a slight mist of coming rain. Was nice, but it's totally dark now when I start my morning runs. I really wish I were a faster runner. I think I must be resigned to being a "jogger" and not a "runner".

It's great to read this thread and see what everyone is doing.
Awhile ago, I think I posted that I badly injured my left ankle tendons in June, so I was sidelined from anything weight bearing for about a month. I was happy to be able to walk the dogs, go on long hikes again. Didn't think I would run again.
Just about every year, my DH and I have participated in Arlington County FD/PD's Memorial 9/11 5K (they were first responders at the Pentagon). It's an emotional event for us. Some years, I walked it, some I ran it. This year I intended to walk it. Once past the start, I started running, slowly and gently. No ankle pain. Ended up being able to push it pretty hard the last half of the race and finished w/a better time than my DH. I really wanted to pass the woman wrapped in the "Don't Tread on Me" (Tea Party) flag and wouldn't you know, I left her in the dust! haha!!
I'm back to running, just twice a week. I have to be really careful about not running on severely canted surfaces and be very diligent in doing my ankle PT strength/stretch routine (anyone's interested, check out bodyworksmd.com -- Dr. Klion's ankle DVD really did wonders in my recovery---my podiatrist didn't prescribe PT).
It's so great to be back to it. I might eventually increase to three times a week, and I'm working on using Chi running (re-reading the book, ordered the updated DVD and am considering taking a one-day clinic).
Swimming and biking are my primary activities, but it's really nice to have the option to run. Don't know if I'll ever get back to running 1/2 marathons (my old favorite distance, back in the day), but for now, I'm content to get in two 3 milers a week, injury-free.

Yeah, I tried to get you to sign up with me to do it but you had other plans (I think it was a PBP thing!). ;-)
Selkie - good for you for running again and taking it easy!
Last night I managed 2.5 miles on our brand-spankin-new treadmill. It runs like a DREAM! OMG - sooo worth what we paid for it. It's a HUGE difference from the old one! I was ready to keep going but glanced at the clock and had to cut it short and get some stuff done before bed. Had I known that I'd be up half the night due to the coyotes anyway, I might have kept running. ;)
This morning before work, I did 3 miles at an easy pace outside. It was GORGEOUS out, so I'm still super pumped.
I also decided that I'm going to challenge myself to run every day in the month of October. I'm waiting until then because I've got more travel to the east coast this month and those days are just too long to consider running. October is predominantly west coast (and Texas) travel for me, so I should be able to make it work. Can't wait!

Since I'm having a "hate" relationship with the bike right now, I have started running. Well, more of a slow jog. I do it for 30 min and alternate walk/run with each song on my ipod. During my work stretch, I'm inside on the treadmill, and on my days off I go run around the local lake. I really hate it but want to love it. I've never been an athletic person, and because I'm not "in shape" it's really difficult and making me not enjoy it. I hope to at least tolerate running some day because it's such good cardiovascular exercise.
To make everyone else feel good about their times, today I did 2.8 miles in 30 min on the treadmill

Bike Chick, that is the attitude I am trying to take, and I've always thought of my running as cross training. I am a cyclist, and that's always going to be my #1, until I keel over.
I totally hear you, Crankin. The bike will always be my #1. I loved it from the beginning. It's taken 2 years to finally enjoy running. Hang in there and keep at it.

A friend asked my DH how I was liking running (asked as they were both out on a long bike ride that I opted not to do in order to get in a "training" run for some event I was doing). He thought about it, and replied, "I think she wavers between ambivilant and hating it." That about sums up my running. It's something I do because if I can't ride or don't ride, I need to do something or I'd go crazy. Signing up for events just gives me focus and a reason to get my butt out the door.
BTW...that time on the treadmill equates to a 10:42 minute per mile pace (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/4/4_1/96.shtml). In my book, that's pretty darned good!

Here's a quote I just read in this month's Running Times, quoting James Shapiro's Meditations from the Breakdown Lane:
Quantification is worth noting and enjoying, and wrestling against with all your might, but some days, most days, what does it have to do with anything, with the sound of the wind or the color of the rain clouds blowing down from the north?

All I can say is that the running is so different from cycling and it is a nice break. It's something I can do in 30 minutes and all I have to do to prepare is put on my running shoes. I don't enjoy it as much but there are rewards.
One day last week I left for a 6 mile run before the sun was up. It was a brisk 45 degrees with the promise of fall in the air. When I turned around at 3 miles and headed back home, the sun was peeking over the trees. It was a beautiful morning and a wonderful way to start the day. I was breathing hard, sweating and feeling grateful to be alive. It's those mornings that make me want to keep running.

Agreed :-)
I did a 7 mile run yesterday. My new goal is to break into the 7:30/mile pace for the 10k next spring. After a warm up I attempted to do 1 mile intervals at 7:30s. I managed one mile at 7:35 then took a 2 minute recovery. Halfway into my second interval I got really nauseated. From then on it was 1/2 mile intervals. Next week I may try and do 3/4 mile intervals.

I went out to walk this morning. I don't know why, but I started running, even though I am definitely sick, with a sinus thing that is going to require a trip to the doctor, after a week. So, I felt like crap, but it had nothing to do with running!
I ended up running for about a mile and a quarter and then walked back up the hill for another mile.
Now I know why I felt so awful after my ride on Wednesday. Duh. I'm sick.

Did 5 miles after work last night. My plan had me doing 6 with 4 at tempo, but when I did my first tempo mile, I realized that Wednesday night's weight workout was getting to me. Ugh. That's what I get for blowing off weights for the past 2 years! ;)
So I cut it to 5 miles at an easy pace. I am also doing my long run on Saturday instead of Sunday, so I figure a little less mileage leading up to it was probably in order.

On the plus side ...
they were kicking off Columbus Oktoberfest with a four-mile race and I figured what the heck, I had a tempo run on tap, and since I hadn't raced since the end of January, it would be a good tune-up for the half marathon on the 17th. Not a goal race, pre-race "nutrition" was a joke, all kinds of sore from the strength class I taught yesterday. Won my AG with a 31:54 . Well, I logged Saturday's 8 miles as a long run-- it feels weird to consider 8 miles long, but my mileage has been so low lately that it is long. It was a beautiful morning; scared a rabbit early on, then encountered a neighbor's chickens wandering down the sidewalk when I was almost home. Now that's free range! Knocked on the owner's door and helped round them up, and got a couple very fresh eggs as thanks...

I have the bottom pair in the photo! But the shape isn't quite right for my bigger foot. Smushes my big toe and my second toe together and they blister between.
But I did my last long run for half-marathon training. I added an extra mile in the middle to make up for skipping the long run the week before...and then came back and passed 6 or 7 people in my group anyway. I was just having a great day. Felt good, even sprinted the last 4 blocks to catch one final person :) But...so now I want to run a road half (rather than the trail race I was going to do) to see how well I'd do. Except the Denver half is now $100  The full is only $15 more!! I haven't decided yet if it's worth it.

So my plan was to do my long run on Sat (early am since it was going to be a hot day) but I got zero sleep so I blew it off. I did a 3 mile EZ run instead. Then, on Sunday, I met some friends for trail running and brunch in honor of a birthday, but I opted to just do a walk and save my running until later in the day.
So Sunday afternoon, I finally got my long run in and even though rain was predicted, it was sunny (but cool, thankfully). My muscles were sore for most of it (it's also been my highest volume week ever too!) but it was bearable until I hit about 8.5 miles. Then my feet, ankles and lower legs started screaming at me. It was clearly the ache of being exhausted though and not injury, so I kept moving. My last mile was my fastest because I wanted it over with! This is pretty significant considering that my last mile was also the hilliest! Anyway, 10.2 miles done - longest run EVER for me. Yay.

Far be it from me ... but maybe because you're already so deep in oxygen debt from the sports that you haven't been training so hard at? :p
I didn't get into Boston. :( But, Saturday's race brought me all kinds of confidence. I'm so glad I decided at the last minute to do that one. :) If I can do that, I can run the half at the pace I'm thinking about ... and if I can do that, I can do a sub-four-hour marathon. Positive thinking (https://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/20/health/nutrition/20best.html), baby, positive thinking.
So the question is ... where's the best place to shave five minutes of my PR? Disney (humidity, hanging around for hours getting stiff) or next year's Columbus (with a string of perfect weather it will probably be awful next year)? Can you guess which way I'm leaning?

Hi all!
I have not been posting much but have been checking in to see what everyone else is doing. Still running but not as much since Pikes Peak. Did get out for a 3.4 miler today. Still hot, but less humid. I did so many long, slow, hot & humid runs that my pace is a bit faster NOW. Hopefully I can keep working on speed as I feel this is my best chance to get a new 1/2 marathon PR under 2:10 (actually I would love to get closer to 2 hours).
Had one month to get ready for our MS Bike Ride this weekend. Have about half a dozen rides under my belt longest being 70 miles. I am not fast but all the running has keep me in shape and my endurance up.
Next "race" is a 1/2 marathon in Wisconsin 1st weekend in Nov. It starts late like at 11:30 (never done a race that late before), will include hills and some packed gravel trail. So don't expect a PR there, but should be fun and different. As for training for this...I can do the distance, may to be pretty since I'll have not much time to get many long runs in. Bike ride this weekend then leave on a 7 day cruise the next...guess I'll be running around the ship!
Keep running all!

I did a 6 mile tempo run last night and had a 10:30/mm average! And I walked part of the last mile as a cool down. That is rockin' for me. Now if I could do two of those back to back, I might be able to break a 2:30 hour hm.
I don't know what the difference was but some days you feel good and others you can't pick your feet up. Monday's 3 mile run was ugly then I ran last night and thought something was wrong with my Garmin because 10 mm were feeling easy.
Is this how it happens? Do you just have to keep plugging away and hang in there to get faster? It's taken me 2 years to be able to run this pace. Running hasn't come easy for me.

Bike Chic--yes, running is like that. There are days that are horrible and then all of a sudden, you have a run that just feels great!
In my experience it takes a long time to increase your speed. Also, if you want to get faster, imho, your training needs to be intentional: pace work, speed work, long runs, recovery runs, rest days, etc. I am steadily getting faster while DH has been running the same pace for the last decade. He never does speed work while I do regular tempo/speed workouts.
I did a nice 5-6 mile trail run yesterday. I LOVE TRAIL RUNNING! :-)

Agreed about the good/bad days. I do think it doesn't matter if you [I]feel[I] good though. Get the miles in. You body doesn't care if you are tired/dragging/stressed, run anyway. Then, you WILL get those magical days when you are rested/energetic/recovered.
Also agree about speed work. My running gets faster to a point, but without dedicated speed work, it stays in the same area.
I am trying to break 12 hours at IM cozumel, so we have integrated speed work again. I did 4x800 on the track this week (and a bunch of other runs). Training started again on Tuesday, and I'm kind of tired already! Yikes!

Did a 3.5 mile run on Wednesday right about lunch time and that was a mistake. I'm in FL doing some networking with my alma mater, and wow, it's hot here! My only break was around lunch, so I had no choice about timing. I was only out there 35 minutes and I got tan lines from my shoes! Anyway, it was tough because of the heat, but I felt pretty strong despite it.
Today I was supposed to do 6 with 4 at tempo but that just wasn't going to happen. I was standing at a career fair all day and my feet are exhausted. I'll run tomorrow instead but keep it short (tomorrow and Saturday). Sunday is my LONG run of this entire training plan and yes...I have to do it here in FL. 12 miles. I was thinking that too! When is your HM? Are you using a training plan from Runners World published this summer, perhaps?
I totally hear you on the speed thing. I'm slow, but I'm just trying to focus on the fact that I'm running at all. 2 years ago, I couldn't even run 1 mile without pain and now I've done 10 (and soon 12!), foot pain free. That has to keep me happy because I'm always disappointed with my speed.
Funny thing is, I ran with a coworker twice a couple of weeks ago and I easily maintained a 10 m/m pace for both the 4 mile and the 3 mile runs over terrain that was hillier than I run at home. I am clearly capable of going faster than I do, but I just don't. I think it's mostly a mental block for me (to a point, of course).

Florida heat...yeah, lovely! GLC, I normally do more biking in the summer, but this year I ran all summer to prepare for the peak. Trust me 18 miles in July & August heat in humidity makes you feel awful and SLOW! IT is MUCH better now.
Did 3 miles today, 1 mile warm up and then 6 one minute intervals (with 1 minute recovery) of "speed work". Then a cool down, so 3 miles total. So essentially I just RAN for a minute at what ever may body could do. Ended up they were about 8:15 - 8:30 min mile pace. I, too, am very slow and just got to where 10:15-10:30 mm is comfortable, a real 10 mm for very long is not doable. But I really want to get closer (or under) 2 hours for my half marathon this year...we shall see.
Heading up to St. Augustine shortly for the MS Bike Ride this weekend. Like I said before I have hardly been on the bike...slow and steady that is me!

Did just shy of 4 miles today, but I don't think it qualifies as a 'run'. The last mile was more walking than running and even doing that, I was getting dizzy. I walked in, grabbed a towel, kicked off my shoes and fell into my parents pool. The 85F pool was like a cold shock to my body...I was THAT hot.
Of course, running at 1 pm was stupid, but it was my only opportunity to take a break, so I did it. Tomorrow and Sunday I'll shoot for early morning.
About a 45-minute trail run for me today--trail running is the best! I am thinking about looking for a half marathon or a 10-mile trail run to train for...it would be good to increase my distance and I could use a goal to step things up. Besides, my sisters have both talked about training for a half marathon and I can't let them show me up :).

I think I can finally start running again. My hyperactive thyroid is seemingly under control although we are playing with my drug dosage. When I started running again last February, my guess is that my thyroid was already or just starting to go wonky, so that might explain why I had struggled to make much progress past a slow 3-mile run or run/walk. I often felt like I was having an anxiety attack and had trouble keeping my HR down. Come June, they started to suspect something was amiss. Because of the horrible heat wave, I had already stopped running much, but once the term Graves' Disease was mentioned, I decided I better formally cool it. My resting heart rate wasn't horrible, but it took very little to get it well over 100.
Well, my latest round of bloodwork suggests to me that it's safe to ease back into it as my heartrate is back down. I've lost whatever running fitness I gained earlier this year, so I'll start slow again and just see how I feel. Here's hoping. I really was enjoying it last year, as it's simply easier for me to get out for a run after work than a ride, and I love running when it's cool/cold out.
Now if I could just find a new pair of shoes that I like.

Will do re: the Altra. My feet are very narrow in the heal, and the rest of my foot is mostly narrow, but I have a slighter wider forefoot. I have been wearing the Mizuno Waverider with success. However, they changed the fit this past year, and they don't work for me anymore. I still have a pair of the old model that are in good shape, so there's no emergency. If you wear a 7 or a 7.5, I've got two pair of Intuitions that have never been worn that I'd be happy to sell to you (at a discount, of course). I bought two pair, trying to get them to work for me but with my super wide forefoot, it was a no go. Unfortunately, I waited too long to return them. :o

GLC, remind me what you're wearing now? I have to get out of those Nikes.
The Intuitions really are not minimal. They just don't have high heels.

I wear a 7 1/2 in street shoes but go up at least a size in athletic shoes. Otherwise, I'd take you up on your offer.

9 miles today, part way through the wash. Running through sand is tough! Then I had a 20 mph headwind coming back. Had not planned to run that far because my last run was over 9 miles (I'm not an experienced runner, I just have a podcast I love to listen to while running). I may do a HM yet!
For me, teaching spinning 3X week really cuts into my bike, running & lifting. My classes are at 6AM so I have to be up no later than 4AM & I'm toast after teaching. :( The teaching may need to go away. I really love my "me" time but not getting it.

Ooops, I actually have a 7 1/2 and an 8, but they run small. I am typically a 7 wide and these fit me in length in the 8, so they'd be short on you anyway.
Oak - I'm super happy with the NB Minimus Trail. I'm actually hoping to try on the NB Minimus for road later today as well, but the trail ones have been great for road running for me.

Men's EE NB Minimus cross-trainers are what I just got for the gym, and they seem to be pretty much okay (a little bit pointy in the toe, and could be just a smidge wider, but closer than anything I've worn so far). And my sister who has feet like mine, but a little wider in the heel, just started running and got a pair of the men's Minimus Road, too.
I just stopped in a store for something else when I was out of town last week and took a look - they didn't have my size in stock, but the NB road shoes definitely have more sole than the gym shoes, so maybe they would have enough cushion for the sharp half-fist-sized rocks I have to run on a lot of the time. They've got a 4mm heel-toe drop, but that's still way better than whatever the Nikes are, I'm sure it's well over 10mm. I'll have to check them out.
ETA: zero drop NB (http://www.newbalance.com/performance/running/nb-minimus-zero-9-things-you-should-know/) will be out in the spring, supposedly. Hmmmmmmm.

I was a tad worried about the 4mm drop (as most of the shoes I wear for everyday use are zero drop from Vivobarefoot), but I don't notice it at all when I run. I am very much a mid/fore foot striker (always have been), so it's not really a problem.
I went with the womens D width as they don't make the men's short enough for me (as usual). They aren't as wide as my walking around shoes, but they got me through a 10 mile run with no undue pain, so I think they'll do for now. NB now needs to make a hiking boot to fit me and I'll be a happy camper! ;)
