View Full Version : Argh! Avatar question.
Dear computer-savvy women,
Snapdragon offered me a perfect picture of a doxie, running, for my avatar. I saved it into "my pictures" in my computer, and then tried to upload it as an avatar. The website tells me the picture is "too big". Can anyone tell me how to make it a smaller picture, so I can use it here?
I'm so very early 20th century...sigh.
Thanks! Lise

running windoze? (these directions are for XP w/ office)
Use the Microsoft Picture and fax viewer to open the file. on the bottom on the window click on teh second icon from the right which opens office picture editor. Your edit options will include resize, and compression, resize for amount of pixels and then compress for web. Save.
Try that, and if ot's still too big, and it's not a photo, open the file with Paint and save as a .gif, they take up a lot less room.
You can do all this with any photo editor. Or, post the picture here as an attachmetn and one of us wizards will do it for you.

Try this one.
Avatars can't be bigger than 100 x 100 pixels, or over 9kb.
If this doesn't work, PM me your email and I'll send you the file.

Do you have a copy of Microsoft Photo Editor? (I have it on my computer & I didn't buy it - suspect it came with some other Microsoft tools...) If you open the photo there, use the image... resize... option. If you set the units to pixels, then set the larger dimension to 100 (to meet the 100x100 requirements for the avatar), the other dimension will be resized automatically. I'd recommend saving the resized photo under a different name than your original, just in case you want (or need) to get back to the original photo.

It worked! It worked, it worked, it worked!!! :D :p :D
Thanks, Denise, snapdragon, and Irulan! I went the easy route, and used the snapdragon-resized version. I've saved the instructions you guys sent me though, so I can practice playing with pictures.
Thanks so much! Whoo-hoo! Lise
