View Full Version : Fit on Men's jerseys for us chicks?
Was browsing Amazon, found some fun jerseys but they're all in the MEN'S side (I buy from TE all the time, but when it comes to fun the women's selection is still a bit behind). Has anyone here bought men's jerseys? Did you take them in? I'm wondering if I can just order a small, then break out the old sewing machine and add some feminine lines to them. I barely fill an A cup, so chest size isn't an issue... :o
To see what I'm talking about:

For me the biggest problem with men's jerseys is how they fit through the hips--and I don't have large hips (though my butt is definitely on the JLo side of things). They are WAY too small, especially if they have elastic at the bottom. If I buy them to fit my bottom, then they are baggy everywhere else.
Thanks Kirsten! I decided to try the New England one, it was a) cheapest and b) eligible for free returns and c) the only small! So we'll see what happens. Crossing fingers. So many of my current jerseys were clearance sale items and are just too thin, have to wear something under them. Once I bought your "reject" jerseys I saw what I had been doing was allll wrong! What I get for being a pennypinch...

That New England one is really cute!
I had some success modifying a men's small jersey to fit me for a team ride I did a few years back. I was the only female, so they weren't exactly going to order a women's jersey for just me (it motivated me to recruit enough woman to the team the following year so that we could order a woman's cut!). I basically just removed the elastic from the bottom (and re-hemmed it), shortened the sleeves (they reached my elbows if I didn't!) and tucked the waist just a tad. I really didn't need to to much to the waist though because once I'd removed the hem elastic, the elastic at the top of the pockets just kind of naturally created a waist with the rest of the jersey for me. It worked out pretty well, if I do say so myself. If I didn't dislike the color/graphic of the jersey, I'd have continued wearing it after the ride was over because the fit turned out well.
Got the New England jersey today! Sleeves definitely need to be a little shorter (yep, hitting the elbows!), and I may take it in a little at the waist. Undecided on the bottom elastic yet, it may hit just about right, but it's tighter than any jersey elastic I've ever come across.
GLC... could you dye it? I've considered dying some of mine, I have two sleeveless jerseys that have a lot of white in them, and it's just distracting when it's whiter where my sports bra goes (there's a third short-sleeve jersey that I just... don't like the shade of blue - can you tell I get a lot of my jerseys online?).
Dye colors have come a long way in recent years, I was pretty impressed at the selection last time I was at a hobby store. The accent colors on those 2 jerseys are teal blue, not the right shade to match my bike, so I'm considering going royal blue. The parts that are blue already should still offer some darker hues for interest. I think.

I supposed I could consider it, except that it also happens to be a blatent advertisement for the company I worked for at the time. Since I now work for the competition, I don't think I should wear it any more! ;)
I have so many jerseys that go unworn as it is that I really don't need it anyway.

Unless it's wool or cotton, you probably shouldn't dye it...at home, anyway. The dyes used on man-made fabrics (except possibly nylon, and I'm not sure of that) are really nasty.
Oh BUMMER! I dye a lot of things around here, but you know, they usually are cotton items. Everything from no-longer white tablecloths to those lightweight ghi's the martial arts schools hand out for free (I use those as pajamas, I'm a ghi snob, those cheap things shouldn't be meant for public use).
I'll check the directions & info... if not, I'm selling those jerseys, I just don't wear them as-is.

If you are looking for fun women's jerseys then have a look here www.summitdifferent.co.uk. This online store has just launched in the UK recently and they have got some great designs. I like their ethos which is, they want to increase the choice of innovative and fun designs for both men and women. From looking at their current stock, they have got more designs for the women than for men ... just what I like to see.
I have one of their jerseys, the jelly beans designs. It is GREAT, very bright and the quality is very good too. Loads of my friends have commented about it and I'm looking to buy another jersey too ... perhaps a Rosie Riveter jersey!!
Have a look girls you won't be disappointed.
:)
I found this other site, also UK, which has great designs, although with very limited runs (I love the "Vive Le Tour" jersey, but I missed it!):

The Space Invader is really cute. Too bad I'm poor. Foska (again, another UK company) also has most of their designs in both men's and women's.

Very true. I'm a fiber artist, and while dyeing polyester fibers can be done at home, the fumes are HORRIBLE. Nylon can be dyed easily using acid dyes (they sound worse than they really are!), and you can get some beautiful color with them.
Cotton, rayon, tencel, etc can be dyed with cool-water fiber-reactive dyes very easily at home. This includes all cellulose fibers (plant fibers) such as linen, hemp, ramie, etc.
For jerseys that I design, I usually end up doing something along the lines of applique or fabric paint. Works great!!
