Northeast Riders

Hi everyone,

I' m new to this forum and was looking to see if there were any riders from the Northeast. It appears most of you are from the West or Midwest Is this due to the weather in the Northeast and not liking to ride in the cold? I know of a local race rider who just moved from here to New Mexico. If you are from the Northeast let us know. I feel all alone. I can't possibly be the only New York rider.

First, welcome to the forum!

You're not alone in the northeast, but you are a few hours to the west of a number of us! There are a number of us in the (general) Boston area, at least one person in western Massachusetts, and some folks up in Maine too.

I try to ride year-round, but my winter riding is much less than my non-winter riding. My hands and feet get chilled too quickly in really cold temps (as in below 35), and the lack of daylight keeps my commuting to work confined to late spring to early fall. Guess I'm a baby - but you can look to newfsmith for inspiration since she commutes year-round (again, in the Boston area) regardless of the weather!

I'm here!! I live in Western MA (North Adams) and just about 1 hr from Saratoga. Trying to still get in a few good rides but the early dark cuts my after work rides out completely. I'm still a bit short of my 2000 mile goal, but I've not put up the bikes yet! Got in a 25 mile ride in on Saturday so don't give up....remember we are one day closer to Spring than we were yesterday!!

I just noticed that your question was posted under the New Riders topic. You might not have seen it (because the regional discussions are on the bottom of the screen and probably scrolled off...) but there is also a Northeast regional discussion. You'll also find the names of more folks from the Northeast there (at least those who have been chatting there).

First of all I just want to say how jealous I am of you living in Saratoga! I love love that area, I lived there myself for 5 years about 8 years ago. That's where I first fell in love with cycling! The roads are awesome there and I attribute my great climbing skills to starting off in Saratoga because no matter where you ride you are bound to run into lots and lots of hill. Some short and steep,long and gradual or the never ending rollings hills. It will make you a strong rider. If you like to mt bike SPAC and Skidmore College has some great trails. I always enjoyed riding around Saratoga Lake then heading off into the country. If you go to the Chamber they have bike route maps. I bought my first Mt. BIke from Paradox Bike shop owned by Giana Roberge and Family she's a top pro cyclist now. I used to see her alot on the road. If you go to the local bike shops that's a great way to find local female cyclist. I've moved around alot and always find that females are always excited to find fellows cyclist to ride with so don't be afraid to introduce yourself.

Kimred there is no need to be jealous, Saratoga is not the way you left it. Real estate has doubled and along with it property taxes have gone up.There is alot of building and with it more traffic. It's no longer the pristine, quaint little village it used to be. National stores are opening up on Broadway with condos above them, and the locally owned stores are moving out due to the inability to afford the rising rents.They have put condominiums in Franklin Square across from the old Price Chopper. The plan is to do away with HI Roc Bowling and put condos there. A 6 million dollar mansion has gone up on N. Broadway, and the Ayco Co. chairman is building a 61,402 square foot mansion off Meadowbrook, (the road that runs out from Union Ave. by the lake) and building continues. Beekman St. now has bistros and art galleries. Its not all bad I'm just worried about it not being able to hold on to the charm which made people want to come here in the first place. Oh I did that Saratoga Lake ride also and it was great, also Fitch Road with the horse farm is incredibly scenic. I can't wait until next spring to get some more of these beautiful rides in. Dreaming until then.

Sorry I just saw this post. I am in NY, but on Long Island. Last year I rode outdoors into January (weekends mainly from when the we had to change the clocks over). Other than that it does not bother me to ride on my trainer which what I am mainly doing now because of a fractured shoulder on Labor Day.

Anyway, see you are not alone.
