On the rear wheel between the spokes and cogset is a clear plastic disc held on to the spokes with little plastic clips. One of my clips broke... any reason anyone can think if t replace it with just one clip broken off? There are still3 I think holding it to the spokes. (I feel dumb calling my LBS about this :) )

It is not there to protect the cogs; it is there to protect the spokes from having a chain shifted into the spokes when bikes are not maintained well. The shop probably had to sell the bike to you with the spoke guard due to some regulation.
Either replace it or throw it out or do a faceplant when it gets caught in the spokes because it isn't attached properly. Your choice. :p
I wonder why the clip broke. Did you already jam the chain into the spokes? So maybe you should replace it.

I crashed last week... may have broken the clip then. Nope- never had any problem with the chain. But thanks! I'll get it replaced.

It's often called a "dork disc."
If your derailleur is adjusted properly, you don't need it.
If you do things with your bike that make you think you might accidentally throw the chain off the cogs and into the spokes, you can replace it. (most folks take them off immediately, so you should be able to find a whole passel of the critters for free)
If you know your bike well, keep the rear derailleur adjusted, and have never even thought it was possible to throw the chain off the cogs and into the spokes, you may not actually need the thing.

Thanks Knotted! I keep my bike well maintained... I guess that's how I realized the hook was broken.

I keep alternately reading this thread title as Coast Guard (the Grand Haven, MI festival is going on right now about 40 minutes from me) and Corset Guard. :p

Pie plate.
My bike has a small black one, barely larger than the largest cog. I haven't gotten around to taking it off yet because it's not as noticeable as the big ones. Also I seem to care less and less about being one of the cool kids...

+1 on pie plate as the name for it.
My new bike doesn't have it. The wheels I got for it didn't even come with one. Mostly I have found they just yellow with age and get dirty and look unsightly.
I'd just take it off and be done with it :)

Yeah, really. Mine's clear and hardly noticeable. Given how often my derailleur likes to go out of whack, I think I'll keep it. I'm not going to be mistaken for "cool" any time soon.

I didn't know it was REALLy called a Spoke Guard... aka corset guard :) , coast guard... and also frisbee thing.
So in the end, the guy at the LBS cut the thing off for me. Said the one on my bike doesn't do much good anyway, as it doesn't protect the spokes down close to the hub. It was there more for original assembly of the bike.
Spoke protector is another name. And those tabs do break off fairly frequently. Then the things slop around when the wheel spins and make lots of noise. At the shop, we replace them when they are broken and generally recommend them on low to mid level bikes. Sometimes I get a wheel without one in which the chain has been shifted into the spokes. Many to all of the in-facing spokes on the cassette side will be gouged and need to be replaced.

Corset Guard. Definitely:)
And I'm for renaming the Dork Disc, AKA Pie Plate, the Corset Guard, then we can talk about 'Corset Guards' on TE from now until time ends, and when cool male roadies stop by (right), they'll be dizzied with confusion.
I need to go tighten my Corset Guard...
I walk on the wild side...my bike has no corset guard! :D

Anyone know how to remove a corset guard?
Loosen the lacing and the whalebones will pop right out. :D
