Have you ever watched live?

I took my Mom to Provence and Paris in 2009. We saw two stages. The penultimate one (on the Col des Abeilles, which isn't too terribly far from Mont Ventoux) and then raced to Avignon to catch the evening train to Paris and saw them in Paris the next day. Not on the Champs Elysee but on the Quai de Montebello, the stretch before they cross the Seine - we stood directly in front of Notre Dame in other words. We got so lucky in both places. A climb on the first one, but not as popular as Mont Ventoux AND we had a local show us a "back door" way to get to the mountain/site where we watched which meant easy access, and, in Paris I am so thankful we were not on the Champs and in fact lucked into getting "trapped" where we did.

In Paris we decided to sightsee in the morning and then eventually amble somewhere to watch (which in general is a bad idea). We had lunch on the Ile St Louis and then walked across the bridge near Notre Dame and realized we couldn't cross the street. I think we were going to drop something at the hotel and then head out. We quickly realized the only metro stop that would take us anywhere was a good stroll away and bound to be miserably crowded so we walked along the Seine until finding a empty shaded spot on the street out in front of it. This was perhaps 130 PM if that, and the riders didn't come through until roughly 4 PM-ish give or take.

The slideshow has them out of order for some reason, but, here they are:

SO MUCH FUN! I am hankering to go back and make an entire vacation out of trailing parts of the tour. I think I'd probably make two trips out of it: one trip to do reconnaissance and the next to actually plunk and watch. Or not. It must be a lot of fun to be on the selection committee. It has to be a huge schmooze fest!

I was over there in 2004 and watched them fly by us. The little town we stayed in that year, they actually rode right through this year. The house we rented was about 3 houses away from the little town circle that they rode right through. Darn it was hard knowing that and not having rented it this year too.

I went over last year and saw them in Rotterdam and Brussels. In Rotterdam they rode right down the small road our hotel was on as they were leaving the city to head to Brussels. I was so nervous that the slightest move and I'd take out a portion of the peloton, since they were that close. Here Mark Renshaw and Bernhard Eisel are looking right at me. At least it felt that way. :)

I had an amazing time last year and I intend to do that again. A friend and I keep joking about literally following them around for a couple weeks. Maybe one day.

Oh and last year I had 2 friends go with me who knew nothing about cycling. They ended up LOVING it and were huge fans. We also went to Paris for about 5 days after, so there was still plenty of non-cycling fun to be had. But for the Prologue, we found a great spot at around noon, sat down on the curb, and then I let them know that the last couple of guys would probably ride by us at about 7PM. Good thing they were having fun!

Isn't the Vuelta next? :D

Heck, yeah! :D I just hope that both the Colorado race and the Vuelta are repeated during hours I can watch. Last year, the Vuelta was so much fun to watch.

Is it a completely different crop of riders who do the Vuelta? I mean, I can't imagine there's enough time between the TdF and Vuelta for those guys to recover...

I think a fair amount of riders from the TdF will ride. The Contador, Evans the the Schlecks won't be there (the latter three will be at the Colorado race), but some other riders will be... the roster have not been announced yet. I'm sure Vincenzo Nibali will be defending his title from last year for Liquigas. Van den Broek and Wiggins will be there, Roche hopes for some redemption from the TdF. All in all, I think it is fun to see a race where there is not as much hype and clear favorites as in TdF.

Yes! And I will be there too!

As I said a way up-thread my kids couldn't understand how come the "Tour de France" came round again so quickly when it was actually the Vuelta I was glued to.
