View Full Version : How do you deal with Deer Flies?

In my neck of the woods in Michigan they are out in full force and furious. I sprayed my clothing, ankles and helmet yesterday before a ride but still had them attack and bite. Any body out there have some advice on what works? I've come to love dirt road and back road riding but they can spoil a good ride. :(

I was actually going to ask that question too! We got mountain bikes last fall and have found some really out back dirt roads to ride on, but the deerflies make us miserable. I don't think bug spray is meant to work on those. Maybe one of those sound emitting devices you wear on your belt? I'm ready to try any gimmick. Someone told me you have to ride 10mph or more to get them to stay off you. But they will still follow you and get you on the hills! My husband had a swarm behind him and he said I did too. I'm sure it probably even looked like a comic strip, like us with all our flies like the pigpen character from Charlie Brown is with dirt!

I've been reading up on them and it appears that most sprays don't work on them unless freshly applied and then it's iffy if it works. I noticed half way through the ride they got much worse and by then I had probably lost most of the protection due to sweating. I had to ride 16 mph to get rid of them and I can't sustain that speed for long or up hill. In researching them it says that their season is 4-5 weeks and I've been seeing them for 2 weeks so I guess we have 3 to go. However, different species of them have different hatch cycles and reading about them said that their cycle is followed by the horse fly season which is another 3 weeks or so. Something to look forward to I guess
I probably looked like I had gone made to the lone car that passed me while I was wildly waving them off with my arms and legs flailing about. I also read that movement attracts them so swatting at them only made it worse. I wondered about noise and vibration so I rang my bell loudly and constantly for a minute or so hoping to annoy them as much as they were annoying me! They did back off while I was doing that but I quit because even though houses were few and far between and set way off the road I didn't want to alarm anyone.
Here is one article about them. They are attracted to shiny things, movement, carbon dioxide and warmth. Everything you have on a bike. Also I read elsewhere they like blue.

Hoping for a magic tip.
I had to quit riding one of my few routes due to those buggers. Like you said, I could not get rid of them even riding fast.
Your body must be completely covered up with something besides lycra. You would be a sweltering sauna in the heat though.
I hope someone comes up with a better idea.

um... live in Arizona where they aren't a problem?;)
Sorry, I know you wanted a serious answer and I can't help with that.

There are some sticker things that can be applied to the top of a hat or helmet (http://www.tucker-usa.com/users/stieg/deerfly.htm)--apparently they work pretty well. Notice they are even made right here in MI. A few years back we picked some up for the North Country Trail Relay, but they ended up not being a problem, so we never used them.

They're awful where I live (and the season lasts all summer long), but not so aggressive - they don't even bite when I'm running, only if I stop. You must have extra hungry flies!
Bite Blocker (http://biteblocker.com/intro.html) seems to do a pretty good job when I'm in the garden. I'm sure you'd need to re-apply periodically (they claim 4-8 hours, but it's tested effective only for about 90 minutes, and that's pretty much my experience with it). It comes in a pretty small bottle that would fit in a bento box or jersey pocket. Or you could make your own wipes by soaking shop-rag grade paper towels and putting them in a ziploc bag.
they like blue.
Oh wonderful. Says she of the blue bike with blue tires, blue handlebar tape, blue water bottle cages and blue helmet. Thank goodness I only wear hi-viz yellow jerseys and black shorts ...

Ordered a 12 pack of those stickers. Love the dirt roads and need to try something. Thanks for the link.

The day of the ride I happened to have on a blue shirt. However my helmet is red and they loved that too!

When I was a jr.girl scout leader in MA we made all of the girls wear a fabric softener tie in their hair to prevent bugs and flies. Not sure if they were effective for deer flies, but they seemed to work for mosquitos and gnats.
might think about using a fabric softener bow on your helmet as a fashion statement. IIR it could be a used sheet, which was easier to manipulate, but experimentation is probably called for.

I will, that should be some fashion statement. A sticky tape on my helmet (with flies stuck on it) and a bow made from a fabric softner sheet!
Better than getting bit by those blood suckers!

Rain tonight and on the forecast for the next couple of days. As soon as I have the opportunity to ride I'll give them a test and report back.

Are those what we call horse flies?

Horseflies are big, deer flies are small and vicious, a little bit smaller than houseflies. The worst part is you don't feel them until they've already bitten.

Horseflies will also hover above the water if you dive under to avoid them...they are patient little jerks!
We actually dealt with deer flies on our ride on Sunday. They are never bad here, but we rode about an hour away and they were totally obnoxious in the AM.

Not wanting to get into a debate about helmet/no helmet but this was an experiment before I stuck this big honking sticker on my helmet. I sprayed myself lightly, saw some deer flies, got one bite and saw a few disappear behind me. Got home and found this.
I did not see the swarms of them that I had seen last week and was not pestered much. We had copious amounts of rain last night and some flooding from the heavy rainfall. I wonder if some of them drowned in the downpour or got flooded away?
On my next dirt road ride, I'll have one plastered across the back of my helmet.
I just couldn't bring myself to tie on a fabric softner sheet.

UGH! Last night I turned into an all-you-can-eat deer fly buffet. Wretched creatures! Literally had to get out of the woods for a bit just to get away from the buggers! I was thinking of this thread though. My riding companion didn't have any issues, but I had some good welts when I got home.

Bike Writer, you say they weren't bad, but I see you caught at least 3!! Oh I hate those things.
Yeah Horseflies are huge black things. I remember learning to hold my breath and stay under water to avoid them.
Deerflies are kind of orangy, more streamlined.
I was surprised to see the stickers were just grey, not a color

Ick! I feel for you. I do not scare or spook easily but after a bout with a swarm of those critters I get skitterish. Later when at home after a nice cool shower I still feel like I can hear them buzzing and any hum type noise brings back the thought of them. I also get that creepy skin crawling feeling like they are lighting on me and biting. They are truly an AWFUL nusiance.

The last time I was out on dirt roads in that area they were horrid, I probably saw 30-40 or more of them. The stickers are more taupe or flesh colored than grey. It might just be the lighting in the photo, it was taken indoors when I came back from my ride and had my hat draped over the nose of the saddle.

Biciclista, well...you'd think if they are supposed to be drawn to blue they might be blue stickers? I've heard that wearing light colors helps you to blend in with the surroundings and that dark colors against a wooded or sky colored background are easier to target for them, but I'm not a fly so what do I know?
I do know that when I ride woodlands around here during fly season, I'll be wearing these patches.

On our dirt road ride there was a swarm behind me and another swarm behind my husband. I got bit on the butt, so I know they just don't stick to heads. When I say swarm, I mean it looks like a small cloud! Incentive to go faster I guess. I once tried to out run a swarm of flies in Colorado on a trail. Lucky for me there aren't grizzlies there. I did get far enough out from my noisy family that I was lucky enough to get to hear en elk bugle!

My bike is in desperate need of washing, and I just don't want to go standing around outside in the flies. :(

That would be enough to give me nightmares! ICK.
Pretty cool about the elk though...

That stinks! They are not around where I live because I'm right in the small downtown. But when I get a couple miles out of town on the back roads, watch out.

I thought the season would have been over by now, I was heading out to a very rural remote area where I had seen swarms so I wasn't taking any chances and made sure I had a fresh sticker on my helmet. No bites today and only saw one deer fly but when I got home and took my helmet off I had caught three of the little buggers. I don't get it, they seem to have a triangular pattern just like last time?
