The images coming from the BBC online feed (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14254705) are quite scary. I hope all members of this forum and their friends and family are OK.

Would be interested in your general impressions lph when the events sink in ...later.

Many of us in North America, don't know much about the "tenor" of Norway these days.

It's one of the European countries that the main North American press don't report on a regular basis.

+1. Glad to hear from you, lph. I am saddened about yesterday's events. So futile.

Glad you're OK, lph. My heart hurts for your country. Several of my ancestors emigrated from Norway and I likely have relatives in the Trondhjem area. When I think of Norway I think of such a peaceful place. But extremists are everywhere. I'm so sorry for the mourning that so many are enduring because of this man's senseless actions.

Hi all, back again on a real keyboard this time. Will be brief because it's late. Thank you so much for all your warm wishes. As far as I know so far family and friends of mine are not affected, nor of Ducks. But as she put in, once the names are announced it's highly likely that we will know of someone affected. Norway is a small country with a pop. of 5 million and there are over 90 dead, most of them teenagers.

Tomorrow we go to pick up our teenage son who has been safely at a summer camp. I will be hugging him very closely.

I'm relieved you and Duck are okay, lph. But how horrific for all involved. I'm having a hard time getting my head around it. These poor children and their families. It's incomprehensible. You and your country are in my thoughts and prayers.

Duck is ok, she's in Trondheim far away from the incident. I'll let her know you asked.

I'm trying to distance myself a little from it all, waiting for the names to be announced. Incapable of making much sense anyway. The Guardian had a couple of good articles in English here:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jul/23/norway-attacks-oslo-explosion-massacre

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/jul/24/observer-editorial-norway-shootings-oslo

They pretty much describe "my" Norway. Nothing like this has happened since WW II. I feel like the Eloi in Wells' Time Machine. Grateful for one thing - physically he was a blond, goodlooking, average Norwegian, nothing that could identify him as an "outsider" and trigger some awful backlash.

Thank you all. We'll be continuing on vacation now, we're borrowing a small sailboat and going towards the swedish coast. Have to get out of Oslo now or be emotionally overwhelmed. It will be a week until all the victims are identified and we know who is affected. I've read just two or three eye-witness stories and they are absolutely heartbreaking, and there will be so many more. He used illegal expanding ammunition to maximize the damage, and shot everyone twice to make sure they were dead.

I guess I really am a pacifist. I don't feel anger at all, just sorrow and apathy, faced with this level of pure evil.

-logging out for a while now. A peaceful summer to all.

Still grieving along with and for your country.
