I often cycle in NYC and have a phobia about cycling up ramps; it's a combination of the tight spaces and going downhill with other cyclists around and pedestrians. I'm generally nervous in tight spaces. I'd love to get over this phobia, but when I (rarely) approach ramps, I chicken out and walk.

Sounds like a fine way to deal with an uncomfortable situation.

Maybe after a while you will feel comfortable riding, but meanwhile it seems like you have found a solution that works.

Stay to the right. Smile sweetly. All shall be well. :p

It's good to get off and walk when you feel unsafe. Do what makes you safe and comfortable! Over time, your skills will improve and you'll adjust to new inner safety limits. :)

It's fine. I often do it now, too, because of falling on a piece of wet concrete and nearly falling due to the same problem a few days before. The way the ramps are, you can't see what is ahead of you before you go under a street and it is often wet without warning.

Don't feel bad about it. I don't. I just know that I am safer that way.

I'm just slower than others at times or I walk a certain part.

If you are so uncomfortable that you feel the need to "save face" as you walk, do what I do: pull out your water bottle and take a swig, then stroll along with the bottle in your hand... a fine "I meant to do that!"

Yeah, I'm just casually strolling along because I am admiring the view and I needed a drink, and my, don't you look sexy on that hot bike as you pass me! Have a nice day!

(or haul out your cell phone, or a tube of Clif Blox... there are a gazillion ways to look casual if you are uncomfortable walking your bike!)
